INTRODUCTION

Model ADB-3

The CERBERUS PYROTRONICSTM Model ADB-3 Audible Base consists of a

standard Series 3 base combined with an audible device. All field wiring

terminates at a four position terminal block located on the back of the unit. The

ADB-3 is used only with Series 3 detectors and is powered directly from the

zone circuit. (Refer to Table 1 for compatible detector model numbers and the

related Installation Instructions.) The audible device sounds when the detector

alarms and stops sounding when the system is reset. (Refer to Figure 1, the

ADB-3 Wiring Diagram.) Only one device is guaranteed to activate per

zone. The ADB-3 is UL 268 listed and meets the UL audibility sound output of

85 decibels at 10 feet.

CAUTION: The ADB-3 must not be used as the primary evacuation

system, but only as a supplemental device.

CAUTION: Do not use looped wire under Terminal 5 of DB-3S base. Use a break

in the wire at the terminal to provide supervision of connection.

Model ADBI-60

The CERBERUS PYROTRONICSTM Model ADBI-60 Audible Base consists

of a standard Series 3 base combined with an audible device. All field wiring

terminates at two four-position terminal blocks located on the back of the unit.

The ADBI-60 is used with System XL3, System IXL (ICON-1), System MXL, or

System MXL-IQ detectors. (Refer to Table 1 for compatible detector model

numbers and the related Installation Instructions.) The ADBI-60 operates as

described below (Refer to Figures 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8).

Audible Bases

Cerberus Division

Several different configurations can provide audible signal circuit power to the

ADBI-60 at terminals 1 through 4, as shown in Figures 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.

During the supervisory state (no alarms), the polarity of the power to all

ADBI-60s is in a reversed (off-normal) state, resulting in zero current flow to

each base.

Any alarm reported to System XL3 or System MXL/MXL-IQ activates the

TRI-2R or TRI-B6R module and triggers the AA-30U/AE-30U modules (See

Figures 3 and 4). The power to all ADBI-60s reverses polarity for normal

operation, but no audibles sound. The System XL3 or MXL/MXL-IQ may then

selectively command the ADBI-60, under programmed control, to sound via the

circuitry in the addressable detector plugged into each ADBI-60. For IXL

(ICON-1), the CE-S is programmed to follow the system alarm relay (See

Figures 7 and 8). Only those ADBI-60s connected to a detector in alarm will

sound. The ADBI-60 is UL 268 listed and meets the UL audibility sound output

requirement of 85 decibels at 10 feet.

Figure 2

CAUTION: The ADBI-60 is used for primary building evacuation; NFPA 72

requires that the source of audible power be capable of operat-

ing all primary evacuation audibles at the same time.

ELECTRICAL RATINGS AND CONSTRAINTS

Model ADB-3

Voltage Rating: On AC: 28-48 VDC peak, full wave

On battery: 20-27 VDC

Current: Supervisory – 0A

Alarm – 13mA at 25 VDC

Constraint: Only one device is guaranteed to activate per zone.

Model ADBI-60

Voltage Rating: 25 ± 5 VDC

Current: Supervisory – 0A

Alarm – 37mA at 25 VDC

Constraints:

1. The maximum number of ADBI-60s per an AA-30U, AE-30U, SPX-1,

MMB-1/2, SMB-1/2, IXL (ICON-1), or CSM-4 Bell power loop is 40,

with no other devices connected, and with the maximum loop current

available.

Note: The number of ADBI-60s cannot exceed the maximum current

available to the loop. See the System XL3 Manual, P/N 315-

083206, the IXL Manual, P/N 315-092371, the MXL Manual,

P/N 315-092036, or the MXL-IQ Manual, P/N 315-093624, for

the compatibility details of INX, ALD, and audible circuit wiring.

2. Maximum line resistance permitted (both wires), not including the end

of line resistor, is 3 ohms. A minimum of 14 AWG wire must be used.

3. T-tapping of the audible circuit (Figures 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) is not

allowed.

4. If the ADBI-60 is powered by System XL3 (Figure 2), the total System

power available for indicating appliances is 5A. If more than 5A is

required, the configuration in Figure 3 or Figure 4 must be used for

auxiliary power.

If an external power source is used on the SPX-1, tie the negative side

of the external power supply to the negative of the PSX 24 VDC power

supply (that is, from terminal 1 or 2 of P9 or P10 on the PSX to terminal

18 of the SPX-1).

Note: The 24 VDC external power source should not be powering any

other devices that could generate noise on the line, such as

Voice Alarm system or devices which are not part of the fire

alarm system. If there is any ground detection with the 24 VDC

external power, disconnect it.

5. Use the AA-30U for either Style Z (Class A) or Style Y (Class B)

wiring; the AE-30U for Class B wiring only (Figures 3 and 4).

1.Set the CE-S address to 201 to

follow the System alarm relay.

2.Only detectors attached to the

ICON-1 can be used with the

ADBI-60.

3.The ADBI-60 turns on when

its associated detector goes

into alarm.

4.The UL listed power supply

with battery backup is rated

at 24 VDC. It must supply

enough current to handle at

least 10% of the ADBI-60s

connected to it.

6. The ADBI-60 is powered by System MXL/MXL-IQ (Figures 5 and 6);

the System power for indicating appliances is 5A. If more than 5A is

required, use the configuration in Figure 3 or Figure 4 for auxiliary

power. See Note above.

7. Connect terminal 6 of the PS-35 (Figures 3 and 4) to the minus DC

side of the System XL3 or MXL/MXL-IQ main power supply for proper

ground fault supervision.

8. The ADBI-60 is powered by System IXL (Figure 7); the System power

on indicating appliances is 3A. If more than 3A is required, use the

configuration in Figure 8.

9. Each audible base is marked as follows to indicate its type (ADBI-60

or ADB-3):

Note: For additional information on the modules used in an individual

system, refer to the Installation Instructions for that particular

module or contact your authorized Siemens Building Technologies,

Inc. representative.

DETECTOR PLACEMENT

The table at right lists the detectors that can be used with the ADB-3 and

ADBI-60 Detector Bases, along with the appropriate Installation Instructions.

Even though no specific spacings are allocated to the detectors used with

these bases, use 30 foot center spacing (900 sq ft), as referred to in NFPA

Standard 72 National Fire Alarm Code, Chapter 5 and CAN/ULC-S524, as a

guide or starting point, if practical, in a detector installation layout. This spacing

is based on ideal conditions—smooth ceiling, no air movement, and no physi-

cal obstructions.

In all installations (except in special circumstances like computer room

underfloors), locate the detector on the ceiling, a minimum of 6 inches from a

side wall, or on a wall, between 4 and 6 inches from the ceiling.

If questions arise regarding detector placement, it is extremely important that

the drawings provided or approved by Siemens Building Technologies, Inc. or

by its authorized distributors be followed! The detector placements shown on

these drawings were chosen after a careful evaluation of all facets of protecting

the area. Environmental factors such as air current, temperature, humidity, air

pressure, and the nature of the fire load are carefully considered. Special

consideration is given to room or area configuration and the type of ceiling

(sloped or flat, smooth or beamed). Siemens Building Technologies, Inc.'s

extensive experience in the design of fire detection systems assures optimum

detector placement and is reflected in these drawings. Follow sound engineer-

ing judgment made by qualified personnel.
