This manual contains important instructions for your SOLA 320
UPS that should be followed during installation and maintenance
of the UPS and batteries.
The installation and use of this product must comply with all
national, federal, state, municipal, or local codes that apply. For
assistance, call your local SOLA agent or SOLA Customer Serive
Office.
If the SOLA 320 UPS unit has been damaged during shipment,
call your vendor immediately.

!CAUTION!
Whenever the unit’s On/Off switch is “On”, there may be
dangerous voltage present at the unit’s outlets. This is
true because the unit’s battery supplies power even if the
unit is not plugged into the wall outlet. The unit contains
dangerous voltages.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, intall the SOLA 320
UPS in a temperature controlled and humidity controlled
indoor area free of conductive contaminants.
The power supply cord is intended to serve as the
disconnect device. The socket-outlet shall be near the
equipment and shall be easily accessible.
All servicing of this equipment must be performed by
qualified service personnel.
Before maintenance or repair, all connections must be
removed. Before maintenance, repair or shipment, the
unit must be completely switched off and unplugged or
disconnected.

Quick Startup
1Connect the input cord to the back of the unit. Plug the unit
into a wall outlet.
2Let the unit charge the battery for 8 hours. You may use the
unit while the battery charges. However, the battery backup
runtime will be reduced until the battery is fully charged.
3Press the On/Off switch to turn the unit on. The unit will beep,
all of the front panel LEDs will light for a moment, the unit will
beep again, the yellow battery light will light and then the
green line LED will come on. The green line LED should
remain on. If not, see the Troubleshooting section on page 6.
4Switch off the load equipment and plug it into the outlets on
the back of the SOLA 320 UPS.
5Switch on the load equipment one piece at a time.
6The Telephone/Network Surge Protection jacks will protect
equipment (phone, fax,
modem, or 10BASE-T
network connection) that
utilizes an RJ-11 or RJ-45
connection. Plug the single
telephone line or 10BASE-
T network connection into
the surge protection jacks
on the back of the SOLA
320 UPS. Use a phone
jumper cable and your
existing cable to connect
your equipment. Network
cabling is not provided. This connection is optional. It is not
needed to use the SOLA 320 UPS.

7Please fill out the warranty registration card and return it to
your local SOLA office.
Installing CheckUPS II Software
Turn off the UPS and the computer to be protected. Connect the
end of the communication cable labelled “UPS” into the commu-
nication port of the UPS. Connect the other end to a free serial
port (DB9S female) on your computer. Turn the UPS power on
and then restart the computer.
Note: These instructions assume D: is your CD-ROM drive. If
not, substitute the appropriate drive letter for D:.
Windows ‘95 Plug and Play Installation
If a dialog box appears during Windows ‘95 startup announcing
that the program has found a SOLA 320 UPS, you may follow the
steps below for quick CheckUPS II installation.
When Windows ‘95 displays the New Hardware Found dialog
box, select the Driver from disk provided by hardware manufac-
turer option, and click the OK button.
When the Install from Disk dialog box is displayed, insert the
CheckUPS II CD-ROM into your drive and click on Browse.
Under Drives, select d: (or whichever drive letter describes your
CD-ROM drive).
Make sure that the File name abestups.inf is selected and click
on OK.
Upon returning to the Install from Disk screeen, click on OK to
start the installation.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Windows ‘95
installation of CheckUPS II.

SOLA 320 UPS Features
The SOLA SOLA 320 UPS system provides protection against
power problems, including power outages, brownouts, and
sudden increases in power. It also provides spike suppression
and line noise filtering to protect your equipment. Front panel
LEDs and an audible alarm keep you aware of the unit’s status.
Use the table below and the drawings on page 4 to familiarize
yourself with the unit.

Symbols, LEDs and Audible Beeps
The front panel LEDs and an audible beep indicate the unit
status. The unit sounds a series of beeps every five seconds
whenever the unit is on battery power or an alarm is present. See
Table 2.

Symbols and LEDsWhat it Means
AC LINE(Green)
Steady:Acceptable input power is
present. The unit is running on line
power.
Off: No input power is present or
the unit is switched off.
LINE CORRECTION (Green)
The unit is boosting or bucking utility
power.
Boost - Automatically increases low input
power to prevent the unit from switching
to battery.
Buck - Automatically decreases high
input power to prevent the unit from
switching to battery.
BATTERY MODE (Yellow) The unit is running on battery power.
OVERLOAD (Red)Output Overload: Refer to Tables 2 & 3
WARNING (Red)Replace the battery or UPS Fault. Refer
to Tables 2 & 3.
Number of BeepsWhat it Means
1Line Loss: The unit is on battery power. See
Table 3 for more information.
2Low Battery Alarm: The unit was running on
battery power and shut down due to very low
battery voltage. The unit will restart
automatically when acceptable power returns.
3Replace the Battery:The battery needs to be
replaced. See "Replacing the Batteries" on
Page 10.
Continuous1) Output Overload:Too much load equipment
2) Starting Fault: Input voltage out of range
when unit is turned on.

Troubleshooting
If you have a question or problem, the troubleshooting table may
help. (See Table 3.) If you need assistance, phone SOLA’s
Worldwide Service or your local SOLA office. Please have the
model number and serial number (located on the rear of the unit)
available.
If the unit must be returned, SOLA will give you a Return Materi-
als Authorization (RMA) number. Phone SOLA for an RMA
number before returning the unit for any reason.
