. Preface
The i-Speak DAISY player is a medical assistive device, designed to play DAISY audio
books on digital carriers. This manual is also available as help in the Device settings.
DAISY is an existing standard which is a complete audio substitute for print materials and
makes it an ideal technology to compensate for a user’s print disability. The i-Speak can
also play standard music cd’s.
The simplicity and form factor makes the device very user-friendly for anybody with a print
disability due to a perceptual, physical, or visual disability. Accessing audiobooks through
the i-Speak will bring joy to the user because it provides a better reading experience.
This manual provides all the information necessary to use and maintain the device
correctly and safely during its lifetime. The user manual supports firmware versions 3.x.x.
In this manual, capital italic typefaces are used to indicate a device control to be pressed,
or reference to a chapter or other references.
The device package includes a quick reference guide assisting this manual.
It
contains
a device overview and supporting drawings for installation, maintenance and
troubleshooting.
Please read the safety notice before using the device. Young children and some other
users may need supervision by a person responsible for the user’s safety, owing to an
inability to fully understand these instructions or take their own measures.

Safety notes and warnings
1. The device is developed for indoor use only in professional and home-healthcare
environments. See Chapter 9 technical information about the degree of protection
against moisture and dust (IPXX), and see Chapter 7.2 for cleaning information.
2. Never replace parts or accessories other than described in this manual (see technical
information and servicing). It can lead to hazardous situations.
3. Accessories may have long cables, pay due care and attention to tripping, strangulation
or asphyxiation. Keep them away from very young children and never use headphones
while falling asleep.
4. Never use the device or any accessory/part when it is damaged.
5. Never short circuit the battery terminals. Never keep loose batteries in your clothes.
It
can lead to hazardous situations and burns!
6. Use the USB port for flash-memory sticks only. Please do not use it for other purposes.
7. Use precautions for implanted devices. Maintain at least 15cm/6 Inches between
i-Speak/Headphones/Earbuds and the implanted device. See magnetic strength details
in the technical information. If in doubt, contact your specialist.
8. Always shut down the i-Speak, disconnect the power adapter and headphone to replace
the battery, clean or store the device.
9. Using other accessories may negatively affect electromagnetic compatibility. Check the

10
. Electrostatic discharge can degrade the performance of the i-Speak. Check the
troubleshooting guide and technical information about EMI when the device is working
incorrectly.
11
. Do not operate the device during transport. This can damage the CD player.
12
. Portable RF communications equipment (including peripherals such as antenna cables
and external antennas) should be used no closer than 30cm (12 inches) to any part of
the i-Speak. Otherwise degradation of the performance of this equipment could result.
13
. Use of this equipment adjacent to or stacked with other equipment should be avoided
because it could result in improper operation.
3
. Product introduction
A Digital accessible information system (DAISY) is a technical standard for digital
audiobooks (talking book) for persons with a print disability. Audiobooks can include any
reading material, like books, magazines or newspapers.
DAISY books consist of navigation levels. Depending on the publisher, Daisy makes it
possible to navigate through stories, chapters, paragraphs and pages. This method
allows you to visualise and navigate as a printed book.
4

Safety signs and symbols
Keep the battery and small parts (SD card, USB memory stick) out of children
reach.
Customers and end-users should not dispose of electronic and electrical equipment
or accessories in household waste.
Headphone is for single person use.

There are multiple options to access books and news. Libraries are offering audiobooks on
CD, SD or USB. You can also download DAISY content from the internet on a computer.
The i-Speak offers a CD player, USB and SD card reader to listen to your content anytime,
and it remembers where you stopped listening. The handle, large buttons and assistive
messages make the device very user friendly.
The device is battery operated and is supplied with a mains adapter to power the device or
charge the battery. An automatic power-down and sleep timer prevent unnecessary battery
discharge. Headphone or Earbuds can be used without others listening in.

. Operating Instructions
6.1. Basic operating controls
The basic operating controls explained in this chapter apply to the factory settings.
The
more advanced controls, different storage media, explanation of the bookshelf and device
settings can be found from section 6.2 onwards.
Find the location of the corresponding numbers of the controls in the Quick reference
guide
. Example: a. = ON-OFF
a.
ON-OFF
Press and hold the ON-OFF button until you hear the switch-on tone. After a few seconds,
the button lights up green and the device says “Welcome”.
When media is present, the i-Speak will resume where you were listening.
To switch off the device, press and hold the ON-OFF button until you hear a switch-off
tone
. The i-Speak will store a bookmarker, and the green light turns off or becomes blue to
indicate it is charging the battery.
b. PLAY-PAUSE
Press the PLAY-PAUSE button to start or pause playback.
c. Navigation (FORWARD and BACKWARD)
The BACKWARD and FORWARD buttons allow you to fast-forward or rewind to the
desired book or track position. During play, press a navigation button to jump 10 seconds
forward or backwards. Press and hold a navigation button to jump forward or backwards in
larger steps.
Pause the book and press on a navigation button to jump to the next or previous DAISY-
level or track. The book will start playing automatically. Note other audio files remain
paused.
d. SLEEP TIMER
The small round button at the right side of the on-off button has three functions. Its main
function is the sleep timer.
A single press on the SLEEP TIMER will enable, modify or disable the sleep timer.
The
sleep timer intervals are 15 minutes, up to 60 minutes. If the sleep timer is set, the
i-Speak will prompt a spoken message 1 minute before switching itself off, which allows
you to modify the setting on time.
Read Chapter 6.2 advanced operating controls to get more information about the other
functions.
e.
VOLUME
Turn the VOLUME wheel to change the audio volume level. The i-Speak emits a double
beep when the minimum or maximum level is reached.
While adjusting, a beep indicates when the maximum safe sound level has been reached.
To set the volume above this safe sound level, release the volume wheel until a double
beep is heard. Then increase the volume as desired.
Be aware that listening to high sound levels could result in hearing damage. A beep will
always indicate you are setting the volume at a high sound level.
6
i-Speak

Note: increasing the volume above the safe sound level means you accept possible risks
associated with high sound levels.
The system will automatically reduce the volume to a safe level after every new power-on
cycle or when you plug or unplug a headphone.
f.
SPEED
It is possible to change the reading speed by a toggle push-button, from -1 to +3. Set the
speed to “0” to listen to the book’s recorded voice speed.
Audible messages are only heard when the device is paused. During play, a single beep
indicates the recorded speed and a double tone indicates the minimum or maximum
setting has been reached.
g.
PITCH
This toggle push-button allows you to change the pitch from -4 to 4. Set the pitch to “0” to
listen to the book’s recorded voice tone.
Audible messages are only heard when the device is paused. A single beep indicates the
recorded voice tone, and a double tone indicates the minimum or maximum setting has
been reached.
h.
EJECT
Press the EJECT button to remove the CD.
6.2. Advanced operating controls
a. Battery status
Shortly press the ON-OFF button to check the battery status. An audible message will
indicate the battery charge level.
The i-Speak’s battery has 3 charge levels, “high”, “normal” and “low”. When the battery
is running out of power, the message “Battery Low, connect the power adapter” will be
given.
During charging, the battery status is charging.
b. Restart book
Press and hold the PLAY-PAUSE button to delete the bookmarker and start the book from
the beginning.
c. Set DAISY-book navigation level
Pause the Daisy book and hold a navigation button FORWARD or BACKWARD to
increase or decrease the navigation level number of the Daisy book.
In most cases, a book has a title, colophon, the book itself with chapters and subchapters,
and an epilogue. Unfortunately, books and magazine have different structures, but DAISY
levels help you navigate a book’s structure.
Level 1 is the highest (for example, the title, colophon, book and epilogue). Level 2 can
navigate further into the book chapters. Level 3 can go into subchapters and so on.
The default level for the i-Speak is level 2, which in many cases can navigate into
chapters
. Do not hesitate to change navigation levels and experience the DAISY
navigation method. To find the ideal level, start at level 1 and try navigating the book.
If
you
cannot go into details as required, increase the level number.

6.3. Using Storage media
The i-Speak can read audiobooks from different media; CD-ROM, SD-card or USB
memory. By inserting a media with a single book, the device will automatically start playing
it. Read chapter 6.4 The bookshelf to select a book when multiple books are
detected.
CD-ROM
To load a CD into the i-Speak, insert a CD with the printed side up into the CD slot until the
device guides the CD inward. The i-Speak will now search for books on the CD-ROM and
start playing the content.
SD-card
Insert the SD-card into the SD-card slot at the left side of the i-Speak. The i-Speak will
now search for books from the SD card and starts playing the content.
The form factor of the SD-card slot prevents misinsertion, and it has a push-in / push-out
ejection mechanism to ensure a simple and reliable card insertion and removal.
USB
Insert the USB-flash memory stick into the USB connector at the left side of the i-Speak.
The i-Speak will now search for books from the USB flash memory and starts playing the
content.
To remove the USB flash memory, pull it out of the USB connector.
6.4. The bookshelf
The bookshelf is a collection of all detected DAISY books and other audio formats
currently available on the i-Speak. When the i-Speak detects multiple books on a storage
device(s), it opens the bookshelf.
Easy navigation through the books with the forward and backward buttons and press the
PLAY-PAUSE to select and open a book.
When the i-Speak is powered on with multiple books or when other storage media are
added, the bookshelf is accessible through the menu. First, pause the device if a book is
playing
. Press and hold the SLEEP TIMER button to open the menu. The first menu item
will be the bookshelf. Press the PLAY-PAUSE button to open the bookshelf. Note: the
menu will close.
The bookshelf puts the books and other audio in the following order:
1. DAISY books are always at the front of the bookshelf.
2. Other audio files are put at the back of the bookshelf.
8
i-Speak

While navigating the bookshelf, the i-speak informs you about the media (CD-ROM, SD or
USB), type (Daisy or other audio), and the title if available.
Note: The bookshelf will search in folders and the subfolders for suitable book types. It is
not preferred to place several books in one folder, which may cause a book or part of it to
be unreadable.
6.5. Device settings
The i-Speak has a menu to get system information or to change the default settings.
Get
access to the device settings, the device must be paused. Press and hold the SLEEP
TIMER button, and it will open a menu with device settings. Press the SLEEP TIMER
button again to close the menu.
The menu controls are described below:
FORWARD = next option.
BACKWARD = previous option.
PLAY-PAUSE = Select or set the menu item/feature.
