Description of Connections

T e following drawing s ows all connections w ic are available to t e user.

VCC Supply voltage 12..48V, 50 V max.

GND Supply ground

LD+ Positive laser diode output (anode). Use bot connectors parallel for ig

currents.

LD- Negative laser diode output (cat ode). Do not connect to ground! Use bot

connectors parallel for ig currents.

Warning: For improved EMI noise immunity t e leads of t e t ermistors must be kept

floating. T e GND-Pins of t e PT100 can be used for s ielding. S ielding

must be kept single ended, too.

Remark: T e targeted value for t e NTC is 10k (Factory set). If you need 1k NTCs or a

low temperature, switc from 10k to 1k via software command.

Remark: T e polarity of t e TEC cannot be c anged by software command. T erefore, if t e TEC eats

or cools uncontrollable, t e polarity as to be c anged manually.

Remark: If t e switc is altered during power-on t e TEC will s utdown itself until t e power is

toggled.

Warning: For single c annel operation t e user must connect Output A wit B and C wit D as s own.

How to get started with an PLB-21

S ep # W at to do Note

1 Unpack your Device.

2 Connect t e PLB-21 Use PLB-21 Pin eader and special cable

3 Apply t e supply voltage. Apply any voltage between 12 V and 48

V at “VCC” wit respect to GND.

4 Wait until “pulser-ok” is ig Pin 5 wit respect to Pin 6 must turn from

0V to 3.3 V

5 Apply t e temperature setpoint Use t e PLB-21 to adjust t e setpoint

temperature by turning t e dial

6 Set enable pin “ ig ”. Apply 3.3 V to pin 4 of t e BOB

connector. T e current will start up now.

7 C eck If t e Driver is not proper cooled, it will

s ut down.

How to get started without an PLB-21

Remark: T e temperature setpoints can not be applied analogue. However t e usage of t e driver

wit out any digital interface (RS232 via PC or PLB21) is possible w en all necessary settings

ave been done previously.

Dos and Don’ts

Never make a s ort at t e output. T is will not do any arm to t e laser driver but will yield in an

incorrect current measurement.

Mount t e driver on an appropriate eat sink. T e driver will s ut down under over temperature

circumstances. Depending on t e desired current a slig t airflow across t e black coils on top is

necessary. Please keep t e temperature of t ese devices below 85°C

Never connect eit er of t e TEC Outputs to GND / VCC as t e polarity of t e output clamps

c anges w en t e TEC switc es from eating to cooling or from cooling to eating.

Absolute aximum Ratings

Supply voltage range: +12 V ... +50 V max during operation. Destroying limit: 56 V

Maximum input current: 20 A

Maximum TEC output current in single c annel mode: 10 A

Maximum TEC output current in dual c annel mode: 5 A

BOB-connector input and output voltages: 0 V to 3.3 V (Terminals are 5 V proof)

BOB-connector output currents: 1 mA

Auxiliary 3.3 V supply voltage output current: 30 mA (Pin 8 of BOB-Conn planned for Rev 2.1)

Auxiliary 12 V supply voltage output current: 100 mA (Pin1 of PLB-21 Conn)

Operating temperature: 0 - 55 °C

Functional Description

T e PL-TEC operating principle is based on t e LDP-CW 2050. LDP-CW operates wit four parallel

buck converters (S1, S2, D1, D2, L1; S3, S4, D3, D4, L2; S5, S6, D5, D6, L3; S7, S8, D7, D8, L4). Every

single converter as an independent control loop wit a current sensor (Imeas1, Imeas2, Imeas3 and

Imeas4). T e set point current t at is pretended by t e user is evenly spread over all four converters.

Several security features protect t e laser diode and LDP-CW from damage. D8 protects t e laser

diode from reverse currents w ile D7 protects t e driver in case of a load failure. In case of a failure,

t e control unit disables t e LDP-CW. A soft-start mec anism slowly raises t e current after enabling

t e LDP-CW.

In contrary to t e LDP-CW 2050 all 4 c annels are linked to separate screw terminals. Furt ermore

t ey are terminated wit an RC-Filter to reduce t e EMI noise on t e TEC.

Power Supply

T e power supply must be able to cover t e output power plus t e internal power losses (refer to next

c apter). Example: You ave a 48 V power supply. T e maximum TEC power will be 240 W at 6 A. T e total

power consumption will be: 240 W + 12 W = 252 W. Divided by 48 V t is yields 5.25 A (better 6 A) of

current consumption at t e DC-Terminals.

Cooling

T e driver produces up to 31 W of losses. T us t e base plate as to be mounted on a eat sink to

ensure proper operation and prevent an over temperature s utdown. If working wit ig currents

above 5 A it is recommended to cool t e power inductors as well. T is can be ac ieved easily by

placing t e pulser wit its eat sink in t e air flow of a fan.

Over Temperature Shutdown

To protect itself, t e LDP-CW automatically s uts down itself if its temperature rises above 80°C. T is

condition is latc ed and t e appropriate bit in t e ERROR register is set. To re- enable t e LDP-CW t e

ENABLE pin must be toggled.
