2.2 Product overview

D A N G E R

Chemical or biological hazards. If this instrument is used to monitor a treatment process and/or dialysis

feed water for which there are regulatory limits and monitoring requirements related to public health,

public safety, food or beverage manufacture or processing, it is the responsibility of the user of this

instrument to know and abide by any applicable regulation and to have sufficient and appropriate

mechanisms in place for compliance with applicable regulations in the event of malfunction of the

instrument.

The CL17sc analyzer measures the free chlorine or total chlorine concentration in water in the range

of 0.03 to 10 mg/L at 150 second intervals. Figure 1 gives an overview of the analyzer.

Connect the analyzer to an SC Controller for power, operation, data collection, data transmission and

diagnostics. Refer to the SC Controller manual for an overview of the controller.

Note: More than one analyzer can be connected to an SC Controller if the controller has more than one quick-

connect fitting.

4 Tubing clip 8 Colorimetric cell

2.2.1 Flow meter

The analyzer has a flow meter that measures the sample flow through the analyzer. Refer to Figure 1

on page 6.

Sample flows through the analyzer only when the analyzer flushes the cell. At other times, there is no

sample flow and the flow rate shown is zero. Push the RIGHT arrow on the controller to show the

flow rate.

6 English

2.2.2 Measurement cycle lights

The measurement cycle lights show the step of the measurement cycle being done. Refer to Table 4.

Table 4 Measurement cycle lights

Description The cell is flushed with water. The buffer solution and the indicator

solution are added to the cell.

The sample is measured.

2.2.3 Analyzer status light

The analyzer status light changes from green to yellow when there is a warning or to red when there

is an error. Refer to Table 5.

Table 5 Analyzer status light

Color Description

Green Normal operation

Yellow The system needs attention to prevent a failure in the future. Measurements continue.

To show the warnings, push menu and select DIAGNOSTICS > [select analyzer] > WARNING LIST.

Refer to Warnings—Yellow light on page 24.

Red The system needs immediate attention. Measurements have stopped.

To show the errors, push menu and select DIAGNOSTICS > [select analyzer] > ERROR LIST. Refer to

Errors—Red light on page 24.

2.3 Product components

Make sure that all components have been received. Refer to Figure 2. If any items are missing or

damaged, contact the manufacturer or a sales representative immediately.

Section 3 Installation

CAUTION

Multiple hazards. Only qualified personnel must conduct the tasks described in this section of the

document.

English 7

3.1 Installation guidelines

• The analyzer is supplied with a standpipe installation kit or a pressure regulator installation kit to

control the water pressure to the analyzer. The user selects the installation kit at the time of

purchase.

• Install the analyzer indoors in an environment with minimum vibration. Refer to the operating

temperature and humidity specifications in Specifications on page 3.

• Do not install the analyzer in direct sunlight or near a heat source.

• For standpipe installations, install the analyzer in a location with 61 cm (2 ft) of free space above

the analyzer for the standpipe mounting.

• Install the analyzer near an open drain. Refer to local regulatory agency instructions for disposal.

3.2 Step 1: Air purge (optional)

Air purge may be necessary if the analyzer is installed in a location with high humidity and/or fumes

that cause corrosion. The air purge keeps positive pressure in the instrument with dry and clean air.

Supply clean, dry instrument-quality air at 0.003 m3/minute (0.1 ft3/minute) at 20 psig maximum.

Refer to the illustrated steps that follow. The 3/8-inch quick-connect fitting and tubing is supplied by

the user.

8 English

3.3 Step 2: Mount and plumb the analyzer

CAUTION

Only the tubing specified by Hach Company may be used with the instrument. Other tubing may

absorb chlorine that is in the sample water and have a negative effect on chlorine readings (decrease

the chlorine readings).

1. Attach the analyzer (item 9) to a wall with four screws. Make sure that the analyzer is level.

Note: The user supplies the mounting hardware.

2. Attach the SC Controller (item 7) to a wall, panel or pipe. Refer to the SC Controller

documentation for instructions.

3. Assemble the Y-strainer. Refer to the instructions on the packing list.

4. Use the 1-inch conduit clamp to mount the Y-strainer assembly (item 5 in Figure 3 or Figure 4).

5. Do step 6 or 7.

The analyzer is supplied with a standpipe installation kit (refer to Figure 3) or a pressure regulator

installation kit (refer to Figure 4) to control the water pressure to the analyzer. The user selects

the installation kit at the time of purchase.

6. If a standpipe installation kit was selected at the time of purchase, install the standpipe as follows:

a. Assemble the standpipe. Refer to the instructions on the packing list.

b. Use the smaller conduit clamp to mount the standpipe assembly a minimum of 61 cm (24 in.)

above the top of the analyzer. Refer to item 10 in Figure 3.

c. With the black tubing, install the sample bypass tubing (item 8). Push the tubing behind and

then into the standpipe. Put the tubing 10–13 cm (4–5 in.) in the top of the standpipe.

d. With the clear tubing, plumb the bottom of the standpipe to an open drain (item 11). Refer to

Drain line guidelines on page 12.

7. If a pressure regulator installation kit was selected at the time of purchase, install the pressure

regulator (item 10 in Figure 4).

8. With the black tubing, connect the Y-strainer inlet (item 5) to the sample source.

Refer to Sample line guidelines on page 12 and Sample requirements on page 12.

9. With the black tubing, connect the Y-strainer outlet (or the outlet of the pressure regulator) to the

sample inlet fitting (item 1) on the bottom of the analyzer. Make the tubing as short as possible

and a maximum of 2.5 m (8 ft).

10. If a pressure regulator was installed, install the sample bypass tubing (item 8 in Figure 4).

11. Assemble and plumb the grab sample assembly (item 4) as follows:

a. Assemble the grab sample assembly.

b. Plumb the tee fitting between the Y-strainer and the analyzer. Refer to Figure 3 or Figure 4.

12. With the clear tubing, connect the sample drain (item 2) and case drain (item 3) to an open drain.

Refer to Drain line guidelines on page 12.
