3.2 Intended use
The Dräger Alcotest® 58201) is used for measuring the alcohol
concentration in the breath of a human. The measurement is used as
an indication for alcohol intoxication. Based on the measurement
results no therapeutic measures should be initiated.
1) Alcotest is a registered trademark of Dräger.

WARNING
Small parts of the device can come loose and be swallowed.
► Keep the device out of reach of children under the age of 3.
4.1 Prerequisites
The instrument is factory-calibrated when delivered. If the calibration
date has exceeded12 months, the instrument should be adjusted, e.g.
by DrägerService. It is still possible to use the device, even if the
calibration period is exceeded. After the last alcohol intake, wait
approx. 15 minutes before a measurement is carried out. Residual
mouth-alcohol may cause incorrect measuring results. This may also
occur by aromatic drinks (e.g. fruit juices), alcoholic mouth sprays,
medicines and drops, as well as by burping and vomiting. Rinsing the
mouth with water or non-alcoholic drinks does not replace the wait
time!
4.2 Initial start-up
A quick setup process (“wizard”) starts when the instrument is
switched on for the first time. This step is not required for
pre-configured instruments.
The following settings are accessible using the wizard:

4.3 Carrying out an automatic breath test
A new mouthpiece must be inserted for each new person who
provides a breath test.
Do not allow any high alcohol concentrations on the sensor, e.g.
by rinsing the mouth with a high proof alcohol shortly before the
measurement, as this will shorten the service life of the sensor.
1. Remove mouthpiece (order no. 68 10 690 “Standard”, 68 11 055
“with back valve”)
2. For reasons of hygiene, leave the protective wrapping around the
mouth contact area. Open the packaging at the perforation and
take off the protective wrapping only around the attachment area
of the mouthpiece.
3. Attach the mouthpiece at an angle to the mouthpiece receptacle.
4. Press it into the receptacle. The fluted markings (press-on surface)
on the mouthpiece faces upwards while this is done. The
mouthpiece audibly snaps into place (see page 2).
5. Remove all packaging.
6. Keep the button pressed for approx.1 second until the startup
screen is displayed. An optional self-test is carried out.
7. After approx. 4 seconds the display shows READY and the
instrument is now ready to test. Take a deep breath and blow
evenly and without interruptions into the mouthpiece as long as
possible. A progress bar is displayed. An adequate breath flow is
confirmed by a continuous tone.
8. Without any further action from user side, the device takes
automatically a test sample at the end of the breath of the test
subject.
9. The continuous tone is muted directly afterwards which gives the
signal that the test subject can stop with blowing. The test result is
displayed with date and time after 5 to 25 seconds (depending on
the instrument temperature and the measured concentration).
In case of a negative alcohol test, 0,00 will be displayed.
Use

en
In case of a positive alcohol test, the measured alcohol level will be
displayed.
To perform a new measurement, press the button.
After the sensor‘s short recovery time, (see "Technical data" on
page 15) READY will be displayed and the device is ready to use
again.
4.4 Performing a manual breath test (optional)
If the test subject cannot provide the required minimum volume, the
sampling of breath can be triggered manually.
1. Preparation as for the automatic breath test (see chapter 4.3 on
page 6).
2. If the progress bar is displayed after breath flow is detected, tap
the button.
In the results display, MANUAL is also displayed.
4.5 Performing a passive breath test (optional)
With passive sampling, the sampling is initiated manually by the
instrument user. The passive test must be done without an attached
mouthpiece. Possible applications include the testing of ambient air or
the breath of persons for the presence of alcohol. To perform a passive
test:
1. Keep the button pressed for approx.1 second until the startup
screen appears.
2. Hold the instrument into the air to be analyzed without a
mouthpiece.
3. Briefly press the button to initiate the measurement.
The device will take a test sample at that very moment and will
start analyzing.
In the results display, PASSIVE is also displayed. If no alcohol is
detected, the No Alcohol will be displayed and the LED will be green.
In case alcohol is detected, Alcohol will be displayed and the LED will
be red.

4.6 Switching off the Instrument
The instrument will switch off after pressing the button for approx. 3
seconds. A switch-off count down will be shown as well. If the display
is off, stop pressing the button. Otherwise the device will be switched
on again.
The instrument will switch off automatically after approx. 4 minutes
without any activity.
Switching off the instrument does not reduce the post-test
waiting period before you can perform another test.
4.7 Removing the mouthpiece
1. Push the mouthpiece upwards out of the mouthpiece receptacle.
2. Dispose of the mouthpiece in accordance with local regulations.
Do not reuse a mouthpiece.
