This manual is an introduction to the PowerGate™ modem. It is a guide for working with the
modem. The manual is organized into five chapters:
Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION TO THE POWERGATE™ MODEM : provides general information
on the PowerGate™ modem, and introduces its key features and benefits;
Chapter 2: GETTING TO KNOW THE POWERGATE™ MODEM: introduces the front and rear
panel components;
Chapter 3: INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION: explains how to install and configure a
PowerGate™ modem in a system;
Chapter 4: OPERATING MODE: provides information on how the modem functions in normal
operating conditions and how to upload a new firmware to it. It also gives instructions for obtaining
assistance from our technical support personnel.
Chapter 5: SPECIFICATIONS: provides product specifications with respect to electrical and
mechanical characteristics.
Product warranty information is located at the end of the manual.

Chapter 1 Introduction to the PowerGate™ Modem
The PowerGate™ modem constitutes an ideal way to connect any PC application, including the
PowerBus™ software tools, to the PowerBus™ devices via a RS-232 interface. It may also be
used by any other RS-232 device that needs to communicate with other PowerBus™ device.
Users should refer to the PowerBus™ Glossary (document #G-PWB-0100) for a description of all
PowerBus™ related terms and definitions mentioned in this document.
1.1 Key Features and Benefits
•Integrates the Domosys U-510 series IC, which makes it possible to configure remote U-
510 / U-520 series IC based devices and properly monitor the network traffic using
software applications such as the PowerBus™ development Tool, PowerBus™ Installation
tool and PowerBus™ test tool.
•Allows developers to easily interface PowerBus™ logical networks via a standard RS-232
connector using a simple set of commands. Refer to the PowerBus™ U-510 / U-520
series IC datasheet for a description of the protocol.
•Connects to the PowerBus™ AC power line medium using the PowerBus™ AC adaptor
(included in the package).
•Can be used both as a modem and a device.

1.2.2 Safety and Warning

• Do not place the PowerGate™ modem in direct sunlight or near a heat source.
• Unplug the PowerGate™ modem during a lightning storm.
• Do not remove cover.

To avoid risk of damage :
• Do not place the PowerGate™ modem close to a source of static electricity or an
electromagnetic field.
• Any repairs made to the PowerGate™ modem must be done by Domosys qualified
personnel.

Chapter 2 Getting to Know the PowerGate™ Modem
2.1 Front Panel
The PowerGate™ modem’s front panel is composed of two 7-segment LED numeric displays and
5 LEDs status indicators to provide user feedback.

2.1.2 2-Digit Display
A 2-digit 7-segments LED display is used to display modem actions and error codes. See Table 2
Action and Error Codes for a complete listing of display codes.

2.2 Rear Panel
The rear panel holds the necessary hardware interfaces to operate the PowerGate™ modem.

2.2.1 RS-232 Connector
The RS-232 connector is used for serial communication between a host and the PowerGate™
modem. The connector is a standard female DB-9.
The PowerGate™ modem’s serial port is 19200 Baud.
The RS-232 port specification is listed in Table 3 RS-232 DB-9 (female) Connector Pin
Assignment.

2.2.2 Power Input Connector
This connector is a polarized 8-pin DIN connector. It is used to provide power to the PowerGate™
modem and couple the PowerBus™ signal to the communication medium.
The AC-to-DC power adapter converts AC power (120, 240 VAC at 50/60 Hz) into a regulated 16
VDC. All power adapters include a PowerBus™ coupling circuit.
Note: ONLY the power adapter provided with the PowerGate™ modem can be used with
the PowerGate™ modem.

2.2.3 Main Power Switch
The power switch is accessible on the device to turn ON/OFF the PowerGate™ modem.
2.2.4 BootROM Mode Switch
The PowerGate™ comes factory programmed with PowerBus™ U-510 series firmware. The
BootROM mode switch serves to put the PowerGate™ modem in the BootROM mode in case a
new firmware would be necessary to be uploaded. Refer to section 4.2 for upload procedures.
To place in BootROM mode, press the BootROM button and simultaneously power up the unit.

Chapter 3 Installation and Configuration
3.1 Connecting the PowerGate™ Modem
The PowerGate™ modem is configured as a Data Communication Equipment (DCE). Use a
regular DB-9 male to DB-9 female serial cable to connect to your equipment serial port.

Follow the steps below to install the PowerGate™ modem system (see Figure 3 Connecting the
PowerGate™ Modem):
1. Connect the power adapter DIN connector on the PowerGate™ modem. This connector
mates with the DIN connector on the rear of the modem.
Connect your host device (computer) to the PowerGate™ modem serial port. If the host is a
computer, connect the RS-232 standard modem cables between the COM1 or COM2. If the host
device is a DCE, use a null modem cable.
2. Plug the power adapter unit into any electrical outlet close to your computer.
3. Turn ON the PowerGate™ modem by toggling the main power switch, located on the rear
of the modem, to the upper position (ON).
