CS500-LC TEMPERATURE AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY PROBE

FOR METDATA1

1. GENERAL

The Model CS500 temperature and relative

humidity probe uses a 1000 ΩPRT (DIN 43760B)

to measure temperature and a Vaisala capacitive

humidity sensor (INTERCAP) to measure relative

humidity. Internal signal conditioning provides an

output of 0 to 1000 mV for both temperature (-40°C

to +60°C) and relative humidity (0% to 100%).

1.1 SPECIFICATIONS

Temperature Measurement Range: -40°C to +60°C

Temperature Accuracy: ±0.5°C @ -40°C,

±0.4°C @ -20°C, ±0.6°C @ +60°C

Relative Humidity Range (for the specified

accuracy): 10% to 90%

Relative Humidity Accuracy: ±2.0% @ 10%

±3.0% @ 90%

Typical Long-Term Stability: Better than

±1.0% per year

Supply Voltage: 7-28 VDC

Current Consumption: Typically < 2 mA

Diameter: 0.47 inches (12 mm)

Length: 2.66 inches (68 mm)

Housing Material: ABS Plastic

2. INSTALLATION

The CS500 must be housed inside a solar

radiation shield when used in the field. The

41301 6-Plate Radiation Shield (see Figure 1)

mounts to a CM6/CM10 tripod. The CS500 is

held within the 41301 with a mounting clamp

(See Figure 2).

The 41002 12-Plate Radiation Shield (see

Figure 3) mounts to a CM6/CM10 tripod. The

UT12VA 12-Plate Radiation Shield mounts to a

UT3 or UT930 tower with the UT018 horizontal

mounting arm.

The CS500 is held in place, within the 41002 or

UT12VA Radiation Shield, via an adaptor,

Model 41381. The 41381 adaptor is threaded

onto the bottom of the CS500 (see Figure 4).

The 41004 12-Plate Radiation Shield, used with

207 probes, can be converted to a 41002 with

P/N 6638.

4. DATALOGGER PROGRAMMING

NOTE: Information in this section is not

necessary when programming the

MetData1 with the Short Cut Program

Builder software.

The CS500 is measured by two single-ended

voltage instructions (Instruction 1). The

multiplier and offset for temperature in degrees

Celsius is 0.1 and -40 respectively. The

multiplier and offset for temperature in degrees

Fahrenheit is 0.18 and -40 respectively. The

multiplier and offset for relative humidity is 0.1

and 0 respectively.

Instruction 86 sets control port 1 high. Control

port 1 turns on the 12 V switch circuit which

supplies power to the CS500.

5. MAINTENANCE AND CALIBRATION

The CS500 probe requires minimal

maintenance. Check monthly to make sure the

radiation shield is free from debris. The white

screen on the sensor’s end should also be

cleared of dust and debris.

When installed in close proximity to the ocean

or other bodies of salt water (e.g., Great Salt

Lake), a coating of salt (mostly NaCl) may build

up on the radiation shield, sensor, filter and

even the chip. NaCl has an affinity for water.

The humidity over a saturated NaCl solution is

75%. A buildup of salt on the filter or chip will

delay or destroy the response to atmospheric

humidity.

The filter can be rinsed gently in distilled water.

If necessary, the chip can be removed and

rinsed as well. Do not scratch the chip while

cleaning or drying. To speed up the drying

process you may lay the chip on a clean paper

towel so it will absorb the water away.

Replace the humidity chip every two years.

Contact Campbell Scientific, Inc. at

(801) 753-2342 for replacements.
