PCNC 1100 Power Drawbar Installation
Product Idencaon: PCNC 1100 Power Drawbar (PN 31706)
Purpose: This document details installaon of the Power Drawbar on the PCNC 1100 mill.

Required Tools
This procedure requires the following tools. Make sure you have them available before you begin:
• 1/4-20 tap (for older machines)
• 7/16 inch wrench or socket
• 16 mm wrench
• 24 mm wrench
• Drill bits (for older machines):
– #7 drill bit
– #29 drill bit (for older machines)
– 5/32 drill bit (for older machines)
• Hammer and chisel or hand grinder (for older machines)
• Large adjustable wrench
• Locte (or similar thread lock)
• Metric hex key wrench set or hex socket set
• Mul-purpose grease
• Power drill
• Small adjustable wrench
BeforeYou Begin
Air Requirements
Make sure your setup meets the following air requirements:
• Air Supply. The Power Drawbar requires an operang range between 90 psi and 120 psi. If supply
exceeds 120 psi, a regulator must be used.
• Dry Air. We recommend you use a lter, desiccator, or compressed air dryer between the compressor
and Power Drawbar to make sure the air is dry.
• Lubricated Air. Air should be lubricated with common air tool oil. Use the FRL Filter-Regulator-
Lubricator (PN 32457) or similar for this purpose. Refer to documentaon that ships with the FRL for
more informaon on installaon and use.
Electrical Requirements
When Power Drawbar is used in combinaon with the Automac Tool Changer (ATC), power is provided internally.
Otherwise, the unit’s power requirements are 115-230 Vac.

Power Drawbar Cylinder Assembly
1. Idenfy four air ngs included with this kit
(see Figure 1).
2. Using thread seal tape (included with this kit),
completely wrap the threads of the four air
ngs.
3. Put the power drawbar cylinder on a at
surface as shown in Figure 2.
4. Install air ngs in the power drawbar cylinder
in the order specied, from top to boom (see
Figure 2 and Figure 3):
a. T-connector
b. Empty
c. T-connector
d. Empty
e. Elbow connector
f. Elbow connector
When complete, make sure your power drawbar cylinder matches Figure 3.
5. Idenfy two 112 mm 1/4 inch Plasc Tubes included with this kit.

6. While facing the power drawbar cylinder, put one plasc tube between the le sides of both T-connector
air ngs as shown in Figure 3.
7. Put the remaining plasc tube between the right sides of the T-connector air ng and the elbow
connector air ng in as shown in Figure 3.
Disassembly
1. Power o the mill according to Power O/On Procedure detailed below.
WARNING! Electrical Shock Hazard: Be sure to power o machine before making any electrical
modicaons. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.
Power Off/On Procedure
Power Off
1. Push in the red E-stop button
2. Click Exit on the screen; when prompted click OK to power off
3.Turn the Main Disconnect to the Off position (see image at right)

1.Turn the Main Disconnect to the On position (see image at right)
2.After PathPilot®loads, twist the
red E-stop button clockwise to release
3. Press the green Start button
4. From the PathPilot interface, click Reset
2. Remove the spindle door Interlock
Tab (see Figure 4). On newer
machines, this is a bolted item that
can be unbolted and removed. On
older machines, this is a welded item
that can be removed by a hammer
and chisel or similar.
NOTE: A chisel may leave visual marks
on the front face of the door so cauon is
encouraged.
3. Remove and discard the exisng
spindle lock, spring, spacers, pin,
and fasteners that are indicated by
white dots in Figure 4.

NOTE: If the pin is dicult to remove, cut it o ush at its base.
4. Remove the exisng drawbar and drawbar bushing, if equipped.
5. On older PCNC 1100 mills only: Remove four Motor Mount Screws and rotate the spindle motor 90˚
clockwise (see Figure 4). Re-install Motor Mount Screws.
Make sure the spindle motor is facing the interior of the cabinet.
NOTE: Use a hex extension to remove and re-install Motor Mount Screws (see Figure 4 and Figure 5).
6. Loosen the Phillips screw on the pulley retenon nut, then remove the Pulley Nut with the Spanner Pin
Wrench (included) as shown in Figure 6; discard.
NOTE: Some nuts may not t the Spanner Pin Wrench; a large channellock or locking pliers can also be used.
7. Inspect the top face of the Pulley for rust or other debris and clean if necessary.

Mechanical Assembly
1. Thread the Spindle Flange onto the spindle and
use the Spanner Pin Wrench to securely ghten
(see Figure 7).
2. Put a dab of Locte on the Spindle Flange Set
Screw and securely ghten (see Figure 7).
NOTE: The set screw is already recessed in the Spindle
Flange; fully ghten the screw once the ange is in
posion.
3. Insert the Power Drawbar, Spring Washers and
Drawbar Bushing (see Figure 8). Insert an empty
Tormach Tooling System (TTS)® collet into the
spindle and thread in the Power Drawbar. Hand ghten the Power Drawbar. Then, insert a TTS tool holder
into the collet and, with the wrench, ghten the Power Drawbar two turns.
4. Put a dab of mul-purpose grease to the areas shown in Figure 8.
IMPORTANT! Aer the inial installaon, you must complete a nal pre-load adjustment (refer to Spring Washer
Pre-Load Adjustment secon later in this document for more informaon). Failure to do so could result in tool
pull-out.
NOTE: Some older machines will not use the included bushing because they don’t have the pocket as indicated in
Figure 8. See Figure 9 for proper spring washer orientaon.

5. Using the pre-exisng hole formerly used
to mount the spindle lock plate, mount the
Eccentric Mounng Post using the M6 x 45 mm
Screw and Lock Washer (see Figure 10).
Do not ghten the screw at this me.
6. Put a dab of mul-purpose grease to the area
shown in Figure 10.
7. Mount the Leg Bracket as follows (see Figure 11):
a. If your machine already has a pre-drilled
and tapped hole: Use the M6 x 25 mm Screw
and Flat Washer.
b. If your machine does not have a pre-drilled
and tapped hole: Use the 1/4-20 Screw and
Flat Washer.
8. Use the Leg Bracket as an alignment tool to mark
the center of the bracket mounng hole.
NOTE: Depending on the age of mill, the pre-drilled and
tapped hole may not provide proper alignment, and
drilling a second hole may become necessary. Before
drilling a second hole, test the alignment (see Figure 14
and Figure 15). If proper alignment is not achieved with
the pre drilled and tapped hole, this step is necessary.

9. Make sure the Leg Bracket is in the vercal posion (see Figure 12).
NOTE: The Leg Bracket must be in the vercal posion before installing the Cylinder Assembly.
10. Slide the air Cylinder Assembly over the Eccentric Mounng Post as shown in Figure 13.
11. Adjust the Leveling Screw unl that Cylinder Assembly is close to level (see Figure 13). Tighten the Leveling
Screw jam nut.
12. With the cylinder in the retracted posion, there should be a small gap between the Hex Head Screw and
the top of the Drawbar (see Figure 13). If there is no gap, remove one M16 Flat Washer from the cylinder
rod.
NOTE: Four extra at washers are included in this kit. If necessary, place the washers under each mounng post
to further adjust the small gap between the hex screw and the top of the Power Drawbar.
IMPORTANT! Make sure that the Hex Head Screw is ght on the cylinder rod when complete.

13. The cylinder must be centered over the Power Drawbar for proper operaon – the Eccentric Mounng
Post is designed for this purpose. Using the wrench normally used to ghten the Power Drawbar manually
(or a 16 mm wrench), rotate the eccentric to tweak the posion of the Cylinder Assembly so that the
cylinder is visually centered over the Power Drawbar. When the adjustment is complete, ghten the M6 x
45 mm cap screw on Eccentric Mounng Post (see Figure 14).
NOTE: Six spring washers are shown in Figure 15. This photo is intended to show correct alignment only. Eight
Spring Washers are included in this kit.
Control Assembly
NOTE: Though it is not required, it may be easier to perform the following steps with the mill moved away from
walls and other obstrucons.
1. Remove the exisng Z-axis motor mount cover; set aside screws.

2. Feed the Control Assembly’s blue wires down
the access hole (see Figure 16).
NOTE: Keep the ends of the wires with the white
connector toward the top, and feed the spade ends
down through the column. It may be useful to tape the
ends together.
3. Thread these wires down through to the column
access hole to the inside of the main electrical
cabinet (see Figure 16).
IMPORTANT! During operaon, wires must not come in
contact with the ball screw and Z-axis motor coupling.
Aer installaon, you must make sure these wires are
out of the way. This does not apply inside the column —
only inside the motor mount.
NOTE: Twist the blue wires together approximately a
dozen twists. This should be done prior to terminang
the free ends.
Electrical Connections
1. Older machines are equipped with a Screw
Terminal Strip, while newer machines have a
Terminal Block. Idenfy the connecon type in
electrical cabinet specic to your machine as
shown in Figure 17.
NOTE: For both the terminal block and strip, the wiring
numbers and layout shown in Figure 18 are the same.
