INDUSTRY CANADA NOTICE
NOTICE: The Industry Canada label
identifies certified equipment. This
certification means that the equipment
meets certain telecommunications
network protective, operational and
safety requirements as prescribed in the
appropriate Terminal Equipment
Technical Requirements document(s).
The Department does not guarantee the
equipment will operate to the user’s
satisfaction.
Before installing this equipment, users
should ensure that it is permissible to be
connected to the facilities of the local
telecommunications company. The
equipment must also be installed using
an acceptable method of connection.
The customer should be aware that
compliance with the above conditions
may not prevent degradation of service

Repairs to certified equipment should be
coordinated by a representative
designated by the supplier. Any repairs
or alterations made by the user to this
equipment, or equipment malfunctions
may give the telecommunications
company cause to request the user to
disconnect the equipment.
Users should ensure for their own
protection that the electrical ground
connections of the power utility,
telephone lines and internal meatallic
water pipe system, if present, are
connected together. This precaution may
be particularly important in rural areas.
Caution: Users should not attempt to
make such connections themselves, but
should contact the appropriate electric
inspection authority, or electrician, as
appropriate.
NOTICE: The Ringer Equivalence
Number (REN) assigned to each
terminal device provides an indication
of the maximum number of terminal
allowed to be connected to a telephone
interface. The termination on an
interface may consist of any
combination of devices subject only to
the requirement that the sum of the
Ringer Equivalence Number of all the
devices does not exceed 5.

Checking the package contents
Make sure you have received the following items in the package.
If anything is missing, contact your local Sony dealer.

Step 2
Setting up the telephone
Do the following steps:
• Insert the batteries
• Connect the telephone
• Choose the dialing mode
Note on installation
Install the unit:
• on a level surface
• away from heat sources, such as radiators, airducts, and sunlight
• away from excessive moisture, extremely low temperatures, dust, mechanical
vibration, or shock
Insert the batteries
Insert four size AA (R6) batteries (supplied).
1Slide open the battery
compartment lid.
2Insert four size AA (R6)
batteries by matching ]and }
on the batteries.
3Close the lid.
CAUTION
Make sure that the telephone line cord is disconnected before opening the
battery compartment lid.
When to replace the batteries
Replace the batteries when the iindicator appears on the display.
Battery life: about 10 months (using Sony manganese (R6) batteries
under normal operation)
Note
Do not take more than one minute to replace the batteries; otherwise you’ll
loose all your data and settings.

When the batteries are expired
• When the batteries are expired, the display is turned off, but you can make or
receive calls. You can’t do any other operations.
• When the batteries are expired, all your data and settings will be erased.
Connect the telephone
If you want to hang the telephone on the wall, see page 21.
1Connect the handset cord.
2Connect the telephone line cord
to the LINE jack and to a
telephone outlet.
3Attach the telephone line cord
in the groove.
Tip
If your telephone outlet isn’t modular, contact your
telephone service company for assistance.

To tilt the phone
If you want to tilt the phone, attach the supplied wall bracket on the
bottom of the telephone.
1Put the four pads into the
hollows of the wall bracket.
2Attach the wall bracket to the
telephone.
3Connect the telephone line cord
to LINE jack and attach the
telephone line cord in the
groove of the wall bracket.
Choose the dialing mode
For the telephone to work properly, select an appropriate dialing mode
(tone or pulse).
Depending on your dialing system, set the DIAL MODE switch as
follows:
If your dialing system is Set the switch to
Tone T
Pulse P
If you aren't sure of your dialing system
Make a trial call with the DIAL MODE switch set to T.
If the call connects, leave the switch as is; otherwise, set to P.

Entering your area code
When you use this phone for the first time, or move to an area that has
a different area code, you must enter your area code.
This is necessary because the phone must distinguish local or long
distance calls to properly dial calls from the Caller ID list.
When you insert the batteries for the first time
or if the area code is erased, the following
display appears.
When “AREA CODE???” is
displayed, enter three digits of
your area code using the dialing
keys.
You hear a confirmation beep.
To check the area code
Press (DIAL).
The area code appears on the display for 20 seconds.
To change the area code
1Press (PGM).
2Press (DIAL).
The current area code appears on the display.
3Enter a new area code using the dialing keys.
You hear a confirmation beep.
Note
When the batteries are expired or are removed for more than one minute, the
area code will be erased.

Step 4
Setting the date and time
If you have subscribed to the Caller ID service, the date and time are
automatically set when you received a call.
If you want to set the date and time manually, do as described below.
Example: to set July 4, 4:53 PM (16:53)
1Press (PGM).
2Press (#).
”CLOCK DATA SET” appears
on the display.
3Enter the date and time using
the dialing keys.
To enter one digit number, press
the number following “0.”
Example:
(0)(7)(0)(4)(1)(6)(5)(3)
4Press (PGM).
You hear a confirmation beep, and the
clock starts operating.
Notes
• To enter a month from January to September, press (0) followed by the
number of the month (1) to (9), even though the display does not show “0.”
• The time is renewed each time the phone receives the Caller ID. Since the
Caller ID sends time information by the unit of one minute, the time
indication may be one minute behind at most.
• When the batteries are expired or are removed for more than one minute, the
date and time setting will be erased.

Making a call
1Pick up the handset or press
(SPEAKERPHONE).
“=== TALK ===” appears on
the display.
2Dial the phone number.
The phone number dialed
appears on the display.
3When you’re done talking,
replace the handset in the cradle
(or press (SPEAKERPHONE)
again).
Receiving a call
1When you hear the phone ring,
pick up the handset (or press
(SPEAKERPHONE)).
“=== TALK ===” appears on the
display.
2When you’re done talking,
replace the handset in the cradle
(or press (SPEAKERPHONE)
again).

To Do this
Adjust the handset volume Slide HANDSET VOLUME.
Adjust the speaker volume Slide SPEAKER VOLUME.
Adjust the ringer volume Set RINGER LEVEL to H (high) or L (low); to turn the
ringer off, set to OFF.
Switch to tone dialing temporarily Press TONE (*) after you’re connected. The line will
remain in tone dialing until disconnected.
Switch to another call Press (CALLWAITING/FLASH).
(”call waiting“ service*) Press the button again to get back to the first caller.
* Contact your telephone company to subscribe to this service.
