Push-to-talk - General
What is Push-to-talk (PTT)?
• Push-to-talk (PTT) is a special feature on a mobile
phone that combines the functionality of a walkie-
talkie or 2-way radio with the normal handset
features. It provides simple communication to a
group of people with just a push of a button.
• It allows the customer to instantly reach other PTT
contacts by eliminating the dialing and ringing steps
in a regular cellular call. PTT calls can be made to
one person or to a group of people.
• It is also referred to as Push-to-Talk (PTT).
How does PTT work?
• PTT is based on half-duplex communication (ability
to speak over the same channel but not at the same
time). It uses Voice over internet protocol (VoIP).
• The person who talks, keeps the PTT button
pressed, while others can only listen. Thereafter
the speaker releases the PTT button, and the next
speaker presses the button and starts talking.
• A PTT call will end automatically after approximately
40 secs if no one presses the PTT button. Otherwise
in a two way call, the call will end when one person
hits the end key.
Is PTT number different from my mobile number?
No, the PTT phone number is the same as your 10 digit
mobile number. But this number should be provisioned
by the operator for PTT to work.
Can I turn off the speaker phone for PTT calls?
Yes, You can select one of the following options to turn
off the speaker phone for PTT calls.
1. while on the PTT screen, go to Menu > Settings >
Audio setting > Speaker > Off. After disabling the
speaker,the PTT audio will come over the earpiece.
You can turn on/off the speaker using # key.
2. You can also enable vibrate for incoming call
option, after enabling this option, phone will vibrate
for an incoming PTT call.
What will be the status of the PTT application if I
activate Flight mode?
You will logout of PTT and the presence status will
change to Ofine state. If you try to access PTT, you
will get a “Could not connect, Please try again later”
message.
How many entries are displayed in the Call history
screen?
A maximum of 10 entries and 5 Sub entries are displayed
in the call history screen.
Is PTT secure?
Yes, PTT is secure because only a known device can
access the network and all data is completely encrypted
over a secure HSPA channel.
Can I access my other phone features like regular
voice calls, browser, messaging etc. While in active
PTT Session?
Yes. You can make regular voice calls, access browser,
messaging Only when you are on active Radio group call,
by pushing the Radio group call to background using

back key.
This feature cannot be enabled for 1-1 PTT
call/ad-hoc group call/personal group call/
conference group call.
What are PTT contacts?
Contacts which can be provisioned in PTT server are
PTT contacts.PTT contacts are different from your phone
address book.
How many PTT contacts can I have in my PTT
Contact list?
• A PTT subscriber can have Max 1024 contacts in
PTT contact list.
• You can have maximum 40 groups.
The maximum number of supported contacts
depends on the software conguration.
Can I delete all PTT contacts at a time?
No, you have to delete contacts individually.
Can we turn off the chirp notication sound, when we
release the PTT button?
Yes, you can control the PTT tones from the PTT settings,
by enabling Silent SOS. Select PTT settings > Silent
SOS > Enable, to activate Silent SOS.
How does Auto-start function work?
When Auto-start feature is enabled, you will be
automatically logged in to PTT when the phone is
switched ON/Switch from Flight mode to Normal mode.
If auto-start is disabled, you must manually login to PTT
when the phone is switched ON/Switch from Flight mode
to Normal mode.

What is an Send Alert?
The Send Alert feature allows you to send an alert to an
individual PTT contact, and request them to call back.
• You can send an Alert only to PTT contacts in
Available state.
• You can send alerts only to a single contact and
cannot be sent to a group.
• You can send an alert if you are in Busy state. But
the receiver will not be able to call you back.
How do I send an alert?
You can send an alert using one of the following ways:
1. Highlight a contact either in the PTT call history
screen / PTT Contacts screen/ groups or from
current call screen > select Actions and and press
the Alert soft key to send an alert.
2. Highlight any contact and press send key(Green
key).
How do I respond to an alert?
• When you receive an alert, press and hold the LSK
key (Yes) to initiate a PTT call to the sender.
• Press the RSK key (No) to dismiss or discard the
alert.
How can we respond to an incoming alert, when the
keypad is locked?
You can ignore or call back to the incoming alert, when
the keypad is locked.
1. Click LSK key (Yes) to place a PTT call to sender.
2. Click RSK key (No) to dismiss or ignore the alert.

How do I activate PTT in my XP5560 BOLT 2?
PTT service must be initialized on your phone, before
making PTT calls.
When you switch ON the phone , for the rst time, you
can activate your PTT service by either :
1. Select Menu > TELUS Link.
OR
Simply press the Push-to-talk button on the left
side of your phone.
2. Once registered, Contact list is displayed. A Green
Icon is displayed at the top left corner of the home
screen and the PTT service is enabled. The PTT
service will retrieve all the existing PTT contacts and
groups.
How do I disable the PTT button?
To disable PTT launch from left side button,
1. Logout of the PTT application.
2. Select Menu > Settings > Dedicated key > PTT
Button > select Off.
How to make a PTT call?
To dial a PTT call,
1. Select the contact/group from PTT contacts/PTT
groups, or from the call history.
2. Press and hold the PTT button.
3. Continue to hold the PTT button to aquire oor and
speak.
4. Release the PTT button when you nish speaking.
5. To end the call, press End Call (LSK) key or End
key.
What is one-to-one PTT call?
This is a simple PTT session where just one caller and
one recipient are involved in the conversation.
What is an ad-hoc group call?
You can quickly make a single call to many contacts in
the PTT Contacts list. You can initiate a ad-hoc group call
to maximum of 10 online contacts.
How do I block PTT calls to my phone?
If you wish to completely block incoming PTT calls,
change your presence status to Busy.
Can I receive and intiate a cellular call while in active
PTT call?
You can receive a cellular call only while on an active
radio group call.
If You accept cellular call PTT call will disconnect.
You cannot initiate a cellular call when you are
on 1-1 PTT call/Personal/conference/ad-hoc
calls.
Will I receive PTT call while in active cellular call?
You will not receive PTT calls, while in active cellular call.
Once the cellular call ends, a PTT Missed call alert will be
displayed to notify the user.

How long can I talk over PTT call?
During a PTT call, you can speak continuously for a
maximum of 90 seconds.Floor will release automatically
after 90 seconds. You have to press the PTT button again
to continue speaking.
The maximum talk duration for speaking
continuously and the maximum duration for a
single PTT session are server congured.
Why does a PTT call get disconnected automatically?
When the PTT call is established and none of the users
speaks until oor idle time expires i.e 40 seconds, the
call will get disconnected automatically. Floor idle time is
server congured.
How to speak when connected to a Wired Headset?
When connected to a wired headset, you should use
the PTT button on the phone and the microphone of the
wired headset to speak.
If a PTT wired headset is used, then the PTT oor can be
taken and released using the button in the wired headset.
How can I adjust the tone volume while on a PTT/
voice call?
While on a PTT call but you are not speaking, press the
side volume button to adjust the volume accordingly. You
can also adjust the volume by selecting Menu > Settings
> Audio settings > Tone volume while in PTT idle state.
Can we set customized alerts for missed PTT calls?
Sonim XP5560 BOLT 2 does not support customized
alerts for missed PTT calls. You can use only the default
tones.
Can we send group PTT alerts?
Sonim XP5560 BOLT 2 does not support group PTT
alerts.
How can we notify a person about missed calls when
they are on a GSM call?
The missed call symbol ( ) will be displayed next to
the PTT icon ( ), when there is a missed call during a
cellular call.
Can we use the PTT button to initiate a PTT call, when
the keypad is locked?
The phone keypad lock must be unlocked to initiate a
PTT call using the PTT button.
Can I make regular voice calls to PTT contacts?
No, you cannot make regular voice calls to PTT contacts
from PTT contact list.
Can I make regular voice calls to received alerts?
No, you cannot dial regular voice calls to received alerts.
Can I view PTT contacts/Groups in native
phonebook?
No, you canot view PTT contacts/groups from native
phone book.
Are PTT events part of native call history?

No PTT events are not a part of native call history.
Can I set any key as a PTT button?
No, you can use only keys that are the dedicated for PTT
operations.
Can I play media le or FM radio during PTT call?
No, you cannot perform any native phone operations
while in PTT call.
Can I send message to PTT contacts?
Yes, you can send the messages to PTT contacts using
one of the following options.
• Highlight or mark contact from PTT contact list/
history/ group, select Actions > Send message.
• Select PTT > Message tab > Actions > New
Text Chat, select a contact to compose and send
message.
Can I receive a PTT call during operation with other
phone applications?
Yes, you can receive all PTT calls and notications while
user is busy in other phone applications.
Can I take oor using Bluetooth headset?
Yes, if you are using PTT Bluetooth headset, then you
can take a oor using PTT button in Bluetooth headset.
Can I set different tone other than default one to PTT
call?
No, you cannot change the tone.
Can I turn off the Bluetooth as a audio source?
Yes When bluetooth accessories is connected to the
phone, PTT audio will will be routed to the bluetooth
accessories. When bluetooth accessories is switched
off/disconnected, PTT audio will be routed through the
phone speaker.
Can I view the Presence status of the PTT contact
from the Native phone book ?
No, you cannot view the presence status of the PTT
contacts from native phone book.
Can I make a PTT call from the native phonebook to
PTT contacts if the PTT application is logged out?
No, you cannot make PTT calls while in logged out state.
Is it possible to forward/ignore cellular calls during a
PTT call?
Yes, You can ignore/forward a cellular call. The call will
automatically forward to the selected number.
To set the phone number for call forwarding, select Native
phone Menu > Calls > Call settings > Call forwarding
> forword if no answer/forword if busy > Activate >
Choose number to whom you want to forward the
cellular call > save.
GSM call is highest priority , if you accept GSM call on
top of PTT call, PTT call will be disconnected. If you
ignore the voice call, PTT call will continue.
By default the option is disabled.

Can I get another PTT call while in PTT call?
Yes, you can initiate/receive another PTT call only when
you are in active Radio group call.
This is not applicable for 1-1 PTT call/ad-hoc
group call/personal group call/conference
group call.
What PTT operations can I perform, when my
presence status is set to Busy?
You can perform the following operations if your presence
status is set to Busy:
• Initiate PTT call. After initiating the PTT call,
presence status will be changed to available.
• Send/receive messages.
• Send alerts.
Presence status will be changed to Busy, when user
activate meeting/silent prole.
What PTT operations can I perform, when I am on a
radio group call?
You can perform the following operations if your are on a
radio group call:
• Push the Radio group call to background. You can
initiate 1-1 PTT call,personal, and conference group
call.
• Access the any other menu during ongoing PTT call.
• Cannot take the oor, atleast 1 member should exist
in the Radio group call.
• Send alerts.
What PTT operations can I perform, when I am in
current call tab?
You can perform the following operations when you are in
current call tab:
• Send message to any user.
• Add contact to the contact list.
• Manage contacts and groups.
• Send alerts to any contact.
What PTT operations can I perform during a PTT call?
You can do following operations during PTT call
• Navigate to contacts, groups and instant messages
tab
• Send instant message
• Send alerts
• Add Contact
You cannot receive PTT call if other user acknowledge
yes for Alert,instead you will get missed call
Can I disable the continuous beep tones, when
received alerts are ignored?
Yes, you can disable the alert time out tone. Select Call
logs > Missed alert > and highlight the entry.
What will happen if I enable Silent SOS feature?
After enabling silent SOS, all the tones (PTT incoming
alert tone,oor control tone,error tone) will be played in
