The V6C

OPM is an optical power meter

designed to attach to ViewConn

. It

adds a new dimension to ViewConn’s

capabilities, making ViewConn a cost-

effective and user-friendly 3-in-1 device

for connector-endface inspection,

cleaning, and optical power testing.

I. Operation

After turning on ViewConn, the green LED on

VC6-OPM will light and you will see the

startup screen on the display (Figure 2). After

~5 seconds, the display will automatically

switch to an optical power measurement

page.

Figure 3 shows a typical power measurement

screen, which indicates your selected

operating wavelength as well as the

measured results on optical power and light

modulation frequency.

The Lightel VC6

OPM attaches to

ViewConn (Figure 1) and runs on

the power provided by ViewConn.

Connect the -pin jack of the OPM

into the ViewConn -pin receptacle,

and secure the OPM body into the ear

holder of the ViewConn rubber cover.

The “INT/EXT” switch on ViewConn

must be set at the “EXT” position to

use the power meter.

The interchangeable universal 2.5mm

and 1.25mm tips provided with the

VC6-OPM

will allow you to test both PC

and

APC connectors. (Special tips

for individual types of connectors are

also available as options.)

During OPM operation, if you switch

ViewConn to the “INT” setting, the

display will automatically switch to a

connector inspection mode showing

connector video images instead of

showing optical power readings

(Figure 4). ViewConn allows easy and

simple switching between the

connector video inspection and the

power monitoring functions.

If the measured power is too low (< -60dBm) or too high (> +10dBm), you will see alarm

screens (Figures 5 and 6).

II. Button Functions

VC6-OPM contains 5 buttons through which a number of parameter selections or

function selections can be executed.

By pressing the “λ

” button, you can select the

operating wavelength in a repetitive sequence of

850/1300/1310/1 90/1550/1625nm. A short beep will

sound each time the wavelength is changed

The starting default wavelength on the VC6-OPM is

1550nm.

By pressing the “mW/dB/dBm” button, you can select the

power unit in a repetitive sequence of dBm/mW (or µ

W)/dB.

A short beep will sound each time the unit is changed.

Under the “dB” selection, you are measuring a relative power

(versus the set reference power, see “REF” button).

The starting default measurement unit on the VC6-OPM is dBm.

By pressin

g the “REF” button for more than 2 seconds, you will set

the current power as a reference power. Setting is confirmed by

two short beeps. Upon releasing the “REF” button, the display will

start to show the relative power (in dB) versus the reference

power.

To recall your set reference power, briefly press on the “REF”

button. The display will flash 3 times with the current reference

setting and then automatically return to the relative power

measurement.

To reset your reference setting, again press and h

old the

“REF” button for more than 2 seconds. The reference

setting will be

changed to the then current power setting. You

will again hear two short beeps confirming a new setting.

Upon

releasing the “REF” button, the relative power

measurement

will be based on the new reference power.

During power measurement, you can save the power data by

pressing the “SAVE” button. When the data is saved, you wil

l hear

a short beep and the display (Figure 7)

will briefly freeze. It will then

quickly return to a normal measurement mode. The frozen display

will show not only the recorded data, but also the assigned

sequential number (010 in this example).

Note: Even when VC6-OPM is powered off, it will remember the last reference

setting. This reference setting will be in the memory when the VC6-OPM is

turned on again.

To return to an absolute power measurement mode, simply press

the “mW/dB/dBm” button to select mW or dBm.

To delete saved records you must first be in the

browse

mode (i.e

after holding “SAVE” button for more than 2 seconds and the

display is showing a selected record.) By pressing the “DEL”

button for more than 2 seconds, you will delete that selected

record. Upon deletion, you will hear two short beeps to indicate

that the deletion has been accomplished. All sequential numbers

for the remaining higher numbered records will be automatically

advanced so that no numbers are missing in the sequence.

To delete all records, enter the

browse

mode first, and

then simultaneously hold the “DEL” button and the “SAVE” button

for more than 5 seconds.

Deleting all records is confirmed by 3 short beeps.

The sequential number of each

record is automatically assigned

with every Save action up to a maximum of 999. If you have

stored 999 records, you will hear

four

short beeps reminding you

that the storage is full. You will need to delete all or some of the

records in order to gain additional space (refer to “DEL” button)

To browse your saved data, press and hold the “SAVE” button for

more than 2 seconds. Upon entering the

browse

mode, you will

hear two short beeps. At the same time the display will show the

most recently saved record. (If there were no saved records in the

OPM, you would hear

four

beeps instead of

two

.) Starting from

this record, you can browse through all other stored records.

Simply press the Up button (i.e. “λ" button) or the Down button

(i.e. mW/dB/dBm button) respectively.

Briefly pressing the “Save” button again will allow you exit the

browse

mode and return to a normal measurement mode.

III. Software Installation

To download the saved data in your VC6-OPM to your computer, you need to install

Lightel’s “DataView” driver and software on your computer.

Before starting installation, connect the power meter to ViewConn and turn it on. The

green power meter light should be on. Then connect the ViewConn mini-B USB cable

to the power meter and the USB jack to your PC (Figure 8).

When you have first connected the V6C-OPM to your PC, the Windows

Hardware Wizard will instruct you to install the driver for the power meter.

Click “Next” to select the driver for your computer’s operating system on the CD

that came from Lightel, and follow the prompts to complete the driver

installation (Figures 9 ~ 12).

(B) Software installation

After installing the driver, click “setup” on the Lightel CD and again follow the

prompts to complete the software installation (Figure 13 – 16).

IV. Downloading and Saving Data to your PC

When you click the “DataView” icon on your computer’s desktop, the software’s

main screen will open (Figure 17).

To download data, the VC6-OPM must be powered (connected to ViewConn,

with ViewConn turned on, and select switch in “EXT” position). The green light on

the power meter should be on, and the power meter connected to your PC

through your USB mini-B cable. An error message will show on bottom of the

application window if this preparation is incomplete. (Figure 18)

Click the “Download” menu item, the saved data will be downloaded from V6C-

OPM to your computer and be displayed as shown (Figure 19

You can add a note to any data record (Figure 21). These notes will be included

when you save the downloaded data as text files or as Excel files.

Click on the menu item “Option”, to open a window to include additional information in

the data report (Figure 22). You can change the titles and add your information. Any

empty information fields will not included in the data report.

Click on the “File” menu, and chose “Save as…” to save the downloaded data as a text

file (Figure 23) or an Excel files (Figure 24).
