Konica Minolta Printer Install/Uninstall for
Windows Vista
Windows Vista Printer Installation
Printer installation on Vista is not that much different than with other versions of Windows, but there is
enough of a difference that detailed instructions and screen shots are needed, especially for those who don’t
have Vista installed on their computer.
Installation steps vary depending on the type of printer you are installing. Installing a
Postscript printer is easier than installing a raster or GDI printer.
Drivers for some of our most recent models and most of our Minolta-QMS and QMS models are included with
Vista.
First Things First: Download the Driver
Download the driver for the particular printer model you are installing, if necessary. Vista includes many of
our drivers already, so those won’t need to be downloaded (see the list below for those models). If there is no
specific Vista driver available for the model, download the Windows XP driver. After downloading, extract
(unzip) the files to a location that is easy to access.
Drivers Bundled with Vista
Konica Minolta: PagePro 9100, magicolor 7450, magicolor 7300, magicolor 5450,
magicolor 2450, magicolor 3300, magicolor 2350
Minolta-QMS: magicolor 6100, magicolor 330, magicolor 2200, magicolor 2, magicolor 2+, 2060, 2425,
3260, 4032, 4060, PagePro 1100 (PCL), PagePro 4100 (PCL)
QMS: 4060, magicolor 2, magicolor 2+
Installing a Network Printer
Microsoft defines a network printer as a printer that is being shared from the PC it is directly attached to (via
USB or parallel), and this may cause some confusion when asked during the installation process if the printer
is a local or network printer (see Step 3). Most people think of a network printer as a printer that has a
network interface card built into it, and is connected to the network by an ethernet cable. These instructions
assume the latter.
1. Click the Start button and select Printers from the list (fig. A). If Printers isn’t listed, choose Contol Panel,
and select Printer underneath the Hardware and Sound heading (fig. B).
A. B.
2. Click “Add A Printer” (fig. C)
3. Click “Add a local printer” (fig. D)
4. Select “Create a new port” and choose “Standard TCP/IP Port” for the “Type of port” (fig. E). Click Next.
5. Change “Device type” to “TCP/IP Device” and type the IP address of the printer into the “Hostname or IP
address” field (fig. F). Don’t check the “Query the printer...” check box. Click Next.

D.
E.
6. The “Device Type” selection will depend on which type of printer you are installing.
For raster or GDI printers, leave it set to “Standard” with “Generic Network Card” and click Next (fig. G).
For Postscript printers, including those already built into Vista, select “Custom” and click the “Settings” button
(fig. H). In the “Port Settings” window (fig. I), select LPR. Under “LPR Settings” the “Queue Name” should be
“xxx” (without quotes). Check the “LPR Byte Counting Enabled” box, and uncheck the “SNMP Status Enabled”
box. Click OK, then click Next.

7. You need to choose the appropriate driver for your printer at this point (fig. J).
If your printer is one of those listed as bundled with Vista, find the correct company name (Konica Minolta, Mi-
nolta-QMS, or QMS) in the “Manufacturer” list, then select the correct printer model in the “Printers” list and
click Next.
If you downloaded the driver for your printer model, click on the “Have Disk” button in the right corner. Click
the “Browse” button in the “Install From Disk” window (fig. K). In the “Locate File” window (fig. L), browse to
the location where you unzipped the downloaded driver files to, select the *.inf file (there should only be one
you can select, and it’s icon should look like a piece of paper with a gear superimposed), and click the “Open”
button. Click “OK” in the “Install From Disk” window (fig. M). Click the printers name in the “Install the printer
driver” window (fig. N), then click Next.

L.
**NOTE: If asked to use the driver currently installed or to replace it with the new driver, select “Replace...,”
and click Next.**
Choose a name for your printer and click Next. Decide whether you want to share the printer or not and
choose the appropriate answer, then click Next.
If you installed a raster or GDI printer, do not click the “Print Test Page” button at this point; just click Finish.
If you installed a Postscript printer, or one of the models bundled with Vista, you may print a test page at this
point if you wish. After the page prints click Finish. Your new printer should appear in the Printers control
panel now.
8. For Postscript printers, or those bundled with Vista, installation is complete. For raster or GDI printers,
right-click on the icon for your printer and select “Properties” from the list. Click on the “Ports” tab and you
will notice that the port selected is FILE, not the Standard TCP/IP port we created. Scroll through the list of
available ports and you will find the one we created earlier in the process (named “IP_xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,” with
the x’s representing the IP address of the printer). Click the checkbox next to the correct port and click the
“Apply” button in the bottom right corner. Click on the General tab and click the “Print Test Page” button and
make sure it prints correctly. Installation is complete.
Installing a Local Printer (USB or Parallel) via Plug-and-Play
1. When you connect your printer to the PC for the first time the Found New Hardware Wizard will open (fig.
O). Click “Locate and install driver software...,” then click “Don’t search online” in the next window (fig. P).
M.
N.
2. Click “I don’t have the disc...” (fig. Q), then in the next window click “Browse my computer for driver
software” (fig. R).
3. Click the “Browse...” button (fig. S) and the “Browse For Folder” window will open. Find the location (folder)
you extracted the driver files to and click on it to highlight it. Click “OK,” then click Next.

4. The “Installing driver software” window opens. After the driver is installed you will see the message that
“The software for this device has been successfully installed” (fig. T).
**NOTE: If an error occurs during
installation (fig. U) skip to Step 7.**
5. For Postscript printers, or those bundled with Vista, installation is complete. For raster or GDI printers,
right-click on the icon for your printer in the Printers control panel and select “Properties” from the list. Click
on the “Ports” tab and you will notice that the port selected is FILE, not the USB or parallel port the printer is
connected to.
If connected to a parallel port, scroll through the list of ports until you find the correct port (usually LPT1),
click the checkbox next to that port and click the “Apply” button in the bottom right corner. If connected to
USB you will see a USB Virtual Printer Port listed that is not assigned to a printer (fig. V). Click the checkbox
for that port, then click the “Apply” button in the bottom right corner. That USB port is now assigned to the
printer (fig. W).
6. Click on the General tab, click the “Print Test Page” button and make sure it prints correctly. Installation is
complete. You may skip the rest of the steps and begin using the printer.
7. If you received an error during installation you will need to install the printer using one of the following
alternate installation methods. Start with the first alternate and work your way through the other methods
until one is successful.
ALTERNATE INSTALL 1
a. Disconnect the printer from the computer

b. Open the Device Manager by clicking on the Start button, then right-click on Computer and select Proper-
ties (fig. X). In the next window, click the Device Manager link under Tasks on the left side (fig. Y).
c. Expand the “Universal Serial Bus controllers” tree by clicking the “+” next to it.
d. Right-click on each of the “USB Root Hub” entries and select “Uninstall” (fig. Z). **NOTE: If you are using a
USB mouse, you will want to make sure that you don’t uninstall the USB Root Hub for it (your mouse will stop
working.) The way to check which “USB Root Hub” the mouse is using is to right-click on each of the “USB
Root Hub” entries, select Properties, and click on the Power tab. The “USB Root Hub” the mouse is using will
list a mouse in the “Attached devices” section of the Power tab.**
e. Restart the PC (fig. AA), reconnect the printer after the computer comes back up, then repeat steps 1-6.
