1. Introduction

The scope of this document is to evaluate the remote

deployment capabilities and basic troubleshooting for PXE or

RIS. It also partially illustrates some network concepts and the

reader is assumed to have a basic knowledge of networking

(DHCP, DNS, IP address…).

In addition, this document illustrates how to setup Microsoft

RIS and successfully deploy an image on a client. RIS uses the

PXE capability and can be considered a PXE server. Only

when the PXE server is also DHCP server is covered in this

document (where a DHCP server is not also a PXE server,

refer to the PXE server’s documentation). A RIS and other PXE

servers’ cohabitation will not be developed.

At the end of this document, users should be able to start a

PXE client that will behave as if started from a bootable floppy

– when it will actually boot on the LAN through the PXE.

The following procedures are, however, only intended for

evaluation purposes and may not totally reflect a real

configuration.

Note. To guide you through the OS interface, the following

notation will be used:

Text in Bold or between “ ” represents a text box, an icon or a list

on which you can click. For example, the OS’s Start menu.

“Select

OK

” means left click on the dialog box or text item

named OK.

“right click on

My Computer

icon” means left click to select the

My Computer icon, then right click on it once.

“Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel” means left click on

Start, then on Settings, and finally on the Control Panel.

5

2. Setup to test PXE feature

2.1. Required

configuration

To setup and test PXE capabilities, the following assumptions

are made to simplify the procedure and explanation:

1 The tests will be performed on a local area network, where

there are at least two different PCs. It is possible to have more than

two, but all the PCs should be in the same sub-network - no

gateway or external server is required for routing data from one PC

to another. All PCs are part of the same Ethernet segment.

2 PXE tests require that one PC is equipped with a PXE server. HP

provides PXE servers to help deployment in a user’s software

environment. Refer to the following URL for more details:

http://www.hp.com/desktops/professional/easy_to_deploy/.

Users can order an evaluation kit from this URL. They can also find

a list of PXE shareware items available on network vendors’ web

sites.

A further explanation on how to use a particular evaluation PXE

server from Intel is also provided at the following URL:

http://www.intel.com/labs/manage/wfm/tools/pxepdk20/index.

htm

3 The PXE server evaluation program and the RIS server will be

performed on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Operating

System. Please note that Intel PXE PDK requires a server version of

NT4, or Windows 2000. RIS also requires a server version of

Microsoft Operating System and was introduced on Windows

2000. Other PXE servers may not require a server version of the

OS.

4 The clients need to have a LAN adapter that is PXE enabled.

PXE 2.0 will be the reference specification for this document.

5 The PXE server should only have ONE network interface

enabled when performing the PXE tests. All other Network Adapters

should be disabled (right click on Network neighborhood,

Properties. then on all Local Area connection icons. Select the

one connected to your network test and click on Disable).

6 Create a bootable floppy disk on which to create the PXE image

from which the PXE client will boot.

6

7 To install RIS, users will need a second drive letter (at least). RIS

does not use C: or any drive letter with Windows 2000 or later

OSs. As such, it is a good idea to have either a second hard disk

drive or use at least 2 different partitions (minimum 4GB per

partition).

In summary, users will need:

· One PXE server, running on a Windows 2000 Server,

configured for DHCP server. This server is within a dedicated

local network that is isolated from any other network.

· One or more PXE-enabled clients.

7

2.2. Configuration

of the Windows

2000 Server

After installing the Windows 2000 server version, users

should use the server wizard to setup a working DHCP server

(go to Start>Programs>Administrative

Tools>Configure your server). Users need to define a

DHCP scope - a range of IP addresses the server allocates to

clients. The following scope will be used here: 192.168.1.5

up to 192.168.1.254

The PXE/RIS server has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.1

The PC’s server name is W2KSRV. It also happens to be a

DNS server (primary server), primary domain controller

(domain name is domain.local) and is running Microsoft

Active Directory (since it is required for the RIS server, the PXE

server was configured to meet both requirements.)

Users do not need to configure the DNS controller, domain

controller and Active Directory to evaluate PXE deployment.

8

3. PXE Evaluation Program Setup

3.1. Install Intel

PXE Evaluation

Program on your

Server

Download the installation pack from Intel’s web site (for

reference, this document refers to build 82 of Intel PXE PDK).

If the server is already configured for RIS, users will need to

stop serving the RIS client. To do this:

1 Go to Start>Programs>Administrative Tools>Active

Directory Users and Computers.

2 Expand the Domain Controllers by double clicking on it (or

by clicking on the “+” in front of Domain Controllers) and

right click on your domain controller (in this example,

W2KSRV).

3 Go to Properties>Remote Install. If checked, uncheck the

“Respond to client computers requesting service” box

and validate this by clicking on OK.

4 Stop the associated service so that the PXE server can

successfully answer client requests (otherwise the RIS server will

answer PXE clients requests first and no other service will be

able to perform this role). To do this, right click on My

Computer, then on Manage. Double-click on Services and

Applications, then on Services, and finally right click on

Boot Information and Negotiation Layer (see below).

9

Right click and then click on STOP. The service should stop.

5 Restart the server to avoid any side effects.

6 The Intel PXE PDK software can be installed by double clicking

on the software package. A temporary directory will be

prompted. Select this default directory or C:\temp, if

preferred. Users will then be prompted for an install path

directory. The default directory is fine. In this example, it is:

D:\Program Files\Intel\PXE\PDK as the OS is installed

on D:

Otherwise, it can be installed in C:\Program

Files\Intel\PXE\PDK. It is important to note the installation

directory as PXE boot images are stored in a sub-folder in this

path.

When prompted, select Yes if you have the server CD-ROM or

No if you do not. Your selection will not have any further

impact on the installation, so if the required files are not found

on your CD-ROM, select “No server CD-ROM”.

7 Users will then be prompted to select their options. Check all

options except “stop built-in TFTP” (the default options

proposed).
