C apter 1: System Description
Function and T eory
T e Keck Interface Probe is a portable instrument capable of accurately
measuring water and ydrocarbon levels and ydrocarbon layer t ickness
in monitoring wells. T e probe consists of a stainless steel and Teflon®
probe attac ed to a reel-mounted, Tefzel* coated engineer's tape. T e
engineer's tape comes in standard or metric graduations and is accurate
to 1/100 of a foot. T e probe as a float w ic detects ydrocarbon
levels and a pair of stainless steel contacts for sensing conductive fluids.
T e probe as an audible buzzer signal and a visible lig t w ic are
activated w en t e instrument reac es water or product. T e probe
features an auto s utoff circuit to prevent battery disc arge. T is auto
s utoff circuit allows t e instrument 10 minutes of continuous operation
before t e unit s uts off.
W en t e Keck Interface Probe is lowered down a well and contacts any
fluid wit a specific gravity of .60 or greater, t e float will activate t e
visible and audible signals. If t e fluid is non-conductive, t e lig t will be
red and a solid tone will sound. If t e fluid is water or ot er conductive
fluid, t e conductive contacts will cause t e lig t to turn green and t e
tone will oscillate. If t e probe is lowered t roug t e water layer to a
non-conductive layer (suc as DNAPL) t e tone will c ange and t e lig t
will return to red.
To avoid damage to tape and strain relief, do not over
tig ten reel wit probe in storage position.

C apter 2: System Installation
T e Keck Interface Probe Frame as a metal loop, t e “ anger”, w ic
may be used to ang t e probe assembly on t e well casing. If t e
Interface Probe frame will not ang on well ead, use t e tape guard to
prevent damage to t e tape.

C apter 3: System Operation
Step 1: Test t e battery. Press t e "ON/TEST" button. If t e
buzzer makes a loud signal and t e lig t is visible, t e battery is adequate
for normal operation. Pressing t e "ON/TEST" button provides 10
minutes of operation.
Step 2: Test t e instrument operation. Remove t e probe from
t e retaining clip and raise t e p enolic float. W en t e float switc
triggers, t e visible signal will be red and t e audible signal will emit a
steady tone. Wit t e float still raised, moisten your fingers and touc t e
float s aft and t e conductive contact. If t e battery is properly c arged,
t e visible signal will turn green and t e tone will oscillate. Successful
completion of t ese tests will indicate t at t e unit is operating properly.
Measuring Fluid Levels
Step 1: Lower t e Interface Probe down t e well until t e signals
activate and t en read t e measurement at t e top of t e well casing or
ot er reference point. Record t is figure as t e first fluid level.
Step 2: Continue to lower t e probe until t e signals c ange.
Record t e measurement at t e reference point as t e second fluid level.
Step 3: To determine t e product layer t ickness, subtract t e
first reading from t e second reading.
Measuring Water Levels in Product-Free Wells
If t e probe immediately emits a green lig t, nonconductive fluids are
absent from t e surface of t e water.
To avoid damage to tape and strain relief, do not over
tig ten reel wit probe in storage position.

Example: You find t at a sinker (DNAPL) begins at 22.36 (1st
reading) and t e total dept of your well is 23.61 (2nd reading). Use t e
above formula to get your correct product t ickness.

CORRECTED PRODUCT THICKNESS = 1.41’
Product t ickness can be determined by adding .15’ to t e
difference of your original measurements.

C apter 4: System Maintenance
Battery Replacement
Replace t e battery w en t e audible and visible signals become weak or
t e unit does not operate.
Step 1: Gently remove t e battery tray.
Step 2: Remove t e old battery and replace it wit a new one.
Cleaning
T e probe can be cleaned wit any detergent suc as trisodium
p osp ate (TSP), Alconox or Liquinox. If ot er detergents are used, take
care to select detergents t at are compatible wit Teflon®, polypropylene,
and stainless steel. T e reel s ould not be submerged in any liquid, but
may be cleaned wit a damp clot .
If t e float becomes covered wit silt or mud, remove t e float retaining
clip, slide t e float off t e s aft, and clean bot t e float and t e float
s aft. Replace t e float so t e arrow is facing t e top of t e probe and
replace t e retaining clip.
T e conductive contact can be cleaned wit detergent and a small brus .
Calibration
Be aware of t e polarity (+, -) of t e battery w en placing
t e new battery in t e tray.
THE FLOAT SHAFT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE
PROBE IS NOT DESIGNED TO BE REMOVED.
