EM61LX2 Data Logging System (DAS70-AR2)
1. Introduction
e Geonics EM61LX2 Data Logging System (DAS70-AR/LX2) consists of a eld computer Ar-
cher2, data logging program EM61LX2wm (referred later as EM61LX2), and associated cable to
connect the Archer2 to the Geonics EM61-LX2 instrument. e program EM61LX2 is designed
for eld computers Archer2 with the MS Windows Mobile V6.5 operating system.
e EM61LX2 program acquires and records survey data from the EM61-LX2 system, under the
control of the operator. It also records various eld information such as survey line number (line
name), starting station, increment, comments, etc. Data is displayed in graphic and text mode.
Readings are displayed in real time in mV. In addition, the program allows you to monitor the in-
strument output while data is not recorded. Readings can be automatically recorded or displayed in
Monitoring mode at user specied time intervals. e EM61LX2 program continuously monitors
the condition of the instrument battery, without leaving the program. e EM61LX2 also provides
the possibility of automatic nulling of the instrument output at any time during the survey.
e program provides two types of graphic displays, modulated ribbon graphs or proles. It can also
display measured channels Early (ChE) and Late (ChL), or Filtered (ChF) for each sensor. Type of
graphic display as well as set of channels (E and L, or F) can be toggled at any time during Monitor-
ing instrument data. Furthermore, for two sensors channels are named for the left sensor: ChLE
(Left-Early), ChLL (Left-Late), and similarly for the right sensor: ChRE (Right-Early) and ChRL
(Right-Late). It is always assumed that the left sensor is on the left (and the right one on right) of
center point while facing direction of a system movement. In case of GPS based positioning it is
the only method to determine proper location of each coil.
e EM61LX2 will accept NMEA-0183 compatible data from the Archer2 built in GPS receiver
or external GPS directly connected to an Archer2 eld computer. GPS data which are embedded in
the EM61LX2 data le can be processed later in the Geonics DAT61LX2 program. e connected
GPS must be able to stream NMEA-0183 compatible messages. e EM61LX2 uses two NMEA
messages GGA and GSA. While message GGA is mandatory, the GSA string is used only to provide
information related to the GPS signal quality during data collection.
e EM61LX2 program records data together with a time stamp at each station. Data les created
with this program can be used to position a survey according to locations recorded separately by a
Global Positioning System (GPS). Survey setup parameters are saved in a conguration le, therefore
they can be automatically used during subsequent data collection sessions.
e program has an option that allows you to view data les. Data les are saved to the program's
data directory My Documents/DATA61LX2 by default. Data le names, which can be set by the
program based on the computer clock or user specied, have extension names L61. Files can be
transferred to a PC computer using a memory card, or by an USB port using the MS ActiveSync
or Central Point program.
e maximum speed of data collection is approximately 18 readings per second assuming 1 or 2
Hz GPS input.

1.1 Program Requirements
To successfully use this software, you will need :
Computer
Field computer Archer2 (or similar)
Installed MS Cenmtral Point (Windows 7/8/10) or MS ActiveSync software V4.00 or later
(Windows XP) in desktop PC, or alternatively SD memory card to transfer les.
Geonics EM61-LX2
e EM61-LX2 instrument with associated cables.
e EM61LX2 program for Archer and Allegro MX is stored on DAT61LX2 CD disk. All neces-
sary initial les (with extension names .INI) as well as data folder (DATA61LX2) are created in
your eld computer after the program is run for the rst time. Check that the le EM61LX2wm is
included in Archer directory on the CD disk.
1.2 Installing EM61LX2
While using the Archer the EM61LX2wm.exe le should be transferred from a desktop PC using
MS Central Point (or MS ActiveSync) software and USB cable provided by manufacturer. Option-
ally the program can be transferred to the eld computer using proper memory card.
It is recommended that the program be placed in My Device/Program Files directory. Using Start
menu tap on File Explorer, then on My Device, and Program Files. en folder Program Files will
appear and the EM61LX2wm program can be placed in this folder.
Shortcuts to the EM61LX2wm can be created and located in Start menu or/and in Programs
folder (accessible from Start menu). Please refer to Archer manual for more information about le
management.

EM61LX2 Data Logging System (DAS70-AR2)
Folders for data les should be created in Storage folder. e program creates folder My Documents/
DATA61LX2 which is the default folder for EM61LX2 les.
For more information about data storage options, refer to the Archer2 user manual.
1.3 Data Files Transfer
Data les are saved in the Allegro with extension L61. Transfer of les to desktop PC can be per-
formed with MS Central Point (Windows 7/8/10), MS ActiveSync (Windows XP), or by proper
memory card. Data les with extension L61 are binary raw data les. ese les have to be converted
to DAT61LX2 format with extension M61 (option "Convert Files" in DAT61LX2). en they can
be loaded and processed in the DAT61LX2 program.
