Overview: DD9500 and DD9800 I/O modules
CAUTION
This procedure does not describe the replacement of the NVRAM module. See
the EMC
Data Domain DD9500 and DD9800 NVRAM Replacement Guide
.
There are 12 I/O module positions, located in the lower part of the rear panel. An LED on
the handle of each I/O module displays its state: green indicates it is working or amber
indicates that a replacement is required. The slots are numbered, left to right, as 0
through 11. The NVRAM module, with a blue handle, is located in slot 0 on the far left.
The figure shows I/O modules populated in slots 1-10 and blank filler panels in 11.
The following figure shows the location of modules in the rear of the chassis.

I/O module slot assignments
The following figure shows the location of the NVRAM and I/O modules.

Note
Slots 2, 3, and 6 (three I/O slots) are used for SAS I/O modules for systems without
Extended Retention (ER).

Note
Slots 2, 3, 6, and 9 (four I/O slots) are for SAS I/O modules for systems with ER or DD
Cloud Tier software.
The table shows the I/O module slot assignments for the DD9500 and DD9800 systems.
Each type of I/O module is restricted to certain slots.
The I/O module slot assignments for the DD9500 and DD9800 systems are the same.

Ethernet I/O modules
A system can have up to a maximum of four Ethernet I/O modules of any type. The four
Ethernet I/O module limit applies to any combination of the different types of Ethernet
I/O modules. In other words two 10GBaseT and two fiber optic Ethernet I/O modules are
allowed. But three of each is not allowed. The available Ethernet I/O modules are listed in
the Available I/O modules on page 3.
Fibre Channel (FC) I/O modules
An FC I/O module is a dual-port Fibre Channel module. Up to four FC I/O modules may be
installed. The optional virtual tape library (VTL) feature requires at least one FC I/O
module. Boost over Fibre Channel is an optional feature and requires at least one FC I/O
module. A maximum of four FC I/O modules may be installed in a system using either VTL
or the Boost protocol or a combination of both protocols.
SAS I/O modules
DD9500/DD9800 systems have three quad-port SAS I/O modules installed in slots 2, 3
and 6. DD9500/DD9800 systems configured with DD Extended Retention (ER) or DD
Cloud Tier software options require an additional SAS I/O module in slot 9.
Identify the failed I/O module
Procedure
1. Check the LED on the affected I/O module.
Note
An LED on the handle of each I/O module displays its state: green indicates it is
working or amber indicates that a replacement is required.
2. Enter the alerts show current or alerts show current-detailed
command to display messages indicating I/O failure. A sample output is shown.

Remove and install an I/O module
The following instructions describe how to remove and install an I/O module.
Note
These instructions do not cover the removal of an NVRAM module. See
DD9500 and
DD9800 NVRAM Module Replacement Guide
for the procedure to replace an NVRAM
module.
CAUTION
lI/O modules are not hot swappable. The system must be powered down.
lOnly trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this
equipment.
lDuring the procedure, wear a grounding wrist strap to avoid ESD damage to the
equipment.
Shut down and disconnect the system
Procedure
1. Run the cifs show active and nfs show active commands to verify that all
I/O on the system is stopped.
2. Reboot the system to verify that no hardware issues exist on the system.
3. Stop the system using the system poweroff command to allow the proper shut
down of the file system and other system components.
If the system that requires a component replacement is the active node of an HA pair,
run the ha status command to verify that the HA pair can failover to the standby
node. Run the ha failover command to initiate failover to the standby node
before replacing a component. The failover process takes 10 minutes to complete.
Note
The system poweroff command completes when the front panel blue LED turns
off.

4. In some cases, when you cannot use the system poweroff command, you can
perform a forced shut down of the system by pressing the power button for six
seconds.
Note
The power button is located in the upper right corner on the front panel of DD9500
and DD9800 systems.
5. Disengage the wire clips, then disconnect the four AC power cords from the rear of the
system.
Note
Label any cables you remove to make reconnecting them easier.
Remove and install I/O modules
Note
lThe steps to replace any IO module—SAS, FC, or Ethernet—are the same.
lIf needed, place all I/O modules on a clean, ESD-protected work surface.
lBe careful not to touch the components on the module.
lRecord port connections for cabling so they can be properly reconnected.
Procedure
1. Move the cable management assembly (CMA) arms out of the way to access the I/O
module.
2. Grasp the orange handle trigger release to release an IO module. The ejector button
should release.
Note
Do not remove the IO until the ejector button has released and popped out. You can
damage the I/O module if it is pulled out with the ejector button seated in its
connector.

3. Pull on the handle to remove the module from the chassis.
4. Align and slide a replacement module into the bay until it seats in its connector.
5. Apply firm pressure on the front of the I/O module until it seats fully into the slot.
Note
To avoid connector damage, do not slam the I/O modules in.
6. Push the ejector button in to secure the module.
Note
If the module is not seated properly in its connector, the ejector button will not remain
in the closed or engaged position.
Reconnect the system
Procedure
1. Engage power by reconnecting all AC power cords.
2. Reconnect the wire clips for the AC cords.
3. Check to see that the service LED on the Management module glows green.
Note
The service LED lights up within 30 seconds after you connect the AC power cords.
4. In the front of the DD9500/DD9800 system, press the power button to turn the power
on the system.
5. Check that the front blue power LED (with the circle with a dot) also turns on.

6. For HA systems that were failed over to the standby node before the component
replacement, optionally fail the ssytem back to the original active node. Run the ha
status command to verify that the HA pair can failover and the ha failover on
the current active node to restore the original active node.
Complete the I/O module replacement
Check each I/O module LED. Each I/O module ejector handle contains a bi-colored LED.
Green indicates normal function, while an amber color indicates a fault condition.
Complete the ethernet I/O module replacement
Procedure
1. Use the net show hardware command to determine that the system recognizes
all ports. The Hardware Address column has a MAC address for each port, and the
Physical column should show the type for each port, copper or fiber.
