Look through this Installation Guide. If ou feel in an wa unsure of performing
this installation, then we strongl recommend contacting a qualified computer
technician to install or assist in the installation.
This ORB Owners Manual is designed to provide efficient instructions for safe
installation of the ORB drive. WARNINGS are clearl marked throughout the
manual. Please read these WARNINGS carefull when installing and/or removing
our ORB drive. Use of the practices and techniques described in this manual
should help assure that our installation of the ORB drive is simple and safe.

SECTION 1 INSTALLATION GUIDE
WELCOME TO O B!
The ORB USB drive offers ou ever thing that ou want in a portable, removable
disk drive high capacit , eas installation and hot pluggable, at an affordable
price that can be easil connected to our s stem using a USB interface.
ORB USB drive is a SCSI drive that connects to a USB port on our computer
s stem through a SCSI to USB adapter cable.
1.1 INT ODUCTION
This installation guide provides detailed instructions, and illustrations, as well
as safet precautions that will help ou configure and install our ORB USB
drive. It is recommended that ou use this guide along with our computer
manual.
If ou intend to connect the ORB SCSI drive to our computer s stems SCSI
interface, refer to SCSI ORB Owners Manual. You can download this manual
in PDF format from the Support Center on our web site at www.castlewood.com.
1.2 SYSTEM EQUI EMENTS
Hardware:
PC Pentium class s stems with either built-in or add-on USB interface
Mac iMac, iBook, bondi-blue Power Mac G3, G4
Operating Systems:
PC Win 98/98SE, Win 2000 (SP2+), Win ME, Win XP
Mac Mac OS 8.6 - 9.2.x, OS X
1.3 HA DWA E/TOOLS FO INSTALLATION
A #0 Phillips screwdriver is needed to change our ORB drives SCSI ID.
You ma require tools if ou need to install an add-on USB adapter card. In this
case, follow the instructions provided b the vendor of the add-on card to perform
this installation.

1.5 INSTALLATION P ECAUTIONS
Be sure to read the following Installation Safet Instructions before moving on
to the actual installation steps. Damage ma occur to the drive and disk if these
precautions are not followed. If for an reason ou do not understand these
instructions, please contact a qualified computer technician to install or assist
in the installation.
Temperature Stabilization - Before removing the drive from its protective
plastic bag, ensure the drive has reached room temperature. This is
accomplished b allowing the drive to sit in its protective plastic bag in the
room environment for at least one hour.
Shock - Dropping, jarring, or moving the drive while the disk is spinning can
cause catastrophic damage. The drive should be placed on a flat, horizontal
surface whenever an ORB disk is installed. The ORB disk should alwa s be
removed from the drive before the ORB drive is moved.
Power - Alwa s attach cable(s) to the drive then the power suppl . Then
the USB connector can be attached to/detached from our computer s stem
with drive power either on or off.
Magnetic Interference - Do not place the drive and/or disk near a monitor
or speaker as interference from such a device ma affect the normal operation
of the drive.

1.6 PC D IVE INSTALLATION
For Win 98/98SE / Win ME
The ORB USB driver has to be installed before the operating s stem is able to
recognize and assign a driver letter to our ORB drive.
1. Insert the ORB Installation Suite CD into our CD-ROM drive. Make sure
the CD is R9 (Revision 9) or later. Otherwise, download the latest USB driver
from the Support Center on Castlewoods web site at www.castlewood.com
2. Select install driver/utilities and in the Castlewood installation window, select
the language appropriate to our use and under drive selection, choose USB
then click OK.
3. Follow the on-screen installation prompts.
4. The installation is completed after the s stem is rebooted. After the drive is
connected to the computer s stem (see Section 1.8), ou should see a new
removable drive icon in M Computer.
For Win 2000(SP2+) / Win XP
There is no driver required from Castlewood. The drive needed is built in the
operating s stem.
1. Later on, when ou connect the drive to the s stem ou will see a New
Hardware Found message. Win 2000 (SP2+)/Win XP will automaticall
install a USB Mass Storage Device driver for our Castlewood ORB drive.
When ou upgrade our s stem from Win 98 to Win 2000, ou might see a
message indicating that ou need to obtain a new driver from Castlewood. Ignore
it and click on the ORB USB drive.
1.6.1 WINDOWS UTILITIES
You ma utilize the following native Windows utilities with our ORB USB drive,
if applicable.
Eject You can eject an ORB disk b right-click on the Removable Drive icon
under M Computer or Windows Explorer, then choose Eject.
Partition The ORB disk is shipped with a FAT16 extended partition. It can
be re-partitioned with fdisk under DOS Command Prompt. You can get to DOS
Command prompt on a Win 98/98SE / Win ME s stem from Start/Programs/MS-
DOS prompt. For help and information on fdisk, refer to Microsoft Windows
98/98SE/ME Users Manual.
Format Under Win 98/98SE / Win ME, the disk can be formatted with Microsofts
format utilit b right-click on the Removable Drive icon under M Computer or
Windows Explorer, then choose format. Under Win 2000 (SP2+) / Win XP, right
click on M Computer icon, select Manage/Disk Management to format. For
help and information on Format, refer to Microsoft Windows Help menu b going
to Start/Help, click on Index tab and t pe in formatting in the space provided.

ScanDisk This Windows utilit scans our ORB Disk(s) for bad blocks. Go to
Start/Programs/Accessories/S stem Tools/ScanDisk to launch this program. For
help and information on ScanDisk, refer to Microsoft Windows Help menu b going
to Start/Help, click on Index tab and t pe in scandisk in the space provided.
Backup You can backup data to our ORB drive with Microsoft Backup provided
with Win 98/98SE / Win 2000 (SP2+) / Win ME / Win XP. It can be accessed from
Start/Programs/Accessories/S stem Tools/Backup. Once the application is launched,
ou can access its help from the Help menu.
1.7 MAC D IVE AND SOFTWA E INSTALLATION.
If ou are running Mac OS 8.6 - 9.2.x, follow the steps below to install the ORB
USB device driver and ORB Tools. If ou are running Mac OS X, ORB device driver
and ORB Tools are not supported. The drive would be recognised since the SCSI
to USB cable is compatible with Mac OS X.
Close all open applications and disable virus protection before
proceeding further.
1. Insert the ORB Installation Suite CD into our CD-ROM drive.
2. Launch the installation b
double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
double-click on the ORB Tools Mac OS 8.6 -9.2 folder.
double-click on the Installer called Castlewood Installer.
3. To install our ORB USB driver, follow the instructions displa ed.
4. After the driver installation is completed and the drive is connected (see section
1.1), our ORB USB drive should appear as an ORB drive icon on the Desktop.
5. If the ORB disk is PC formatted, ou can reformat it to Mac format through the
Mac Erase Disk feature or ORB Tools for Mac.
1.7.1 O B Tools for Mac
ORB Tools for Mac is a suite of utilities included on the ORB Installation Suite CD
supplied with our new ORB drive that expands its functionalit .
This suite of utilities is not supported under OS X.
Once the ORB Tools is properl installed, ou can launch from its alias or the folder
in the hard drive where it was installed.
The utilities provide the following functions:
Status displa s the SCSI bus the ORB drive is on and its SCSI ID.
Mount / Unmount Volume mount/unmount the drive on/from the Desktop.
Eject Media eject the disk from the drive.
Initialize Set up drive for use with Macintosh. Create multiple partitions and
format disk.
Verify Check the media for error.
Update Update the driver on media to the latest and greatest (if applicable).
Spin Down Timer Set our preference for spin down time.
Write Protect Drive Prevent modification to media in the drive.
Drive Operating Mode Set the drive on Write Verif mode for extra level of data
protection or A/V Mode for A/V recording.

1.8 HA DWA E SETUP
In this section ou will be ph sicall connecting our ORB drive through a SCSI
to USB adapter cable to our computer s stem.
1. Unpack your O B drive and accessories.
You should have: An ORB 2.2GB USB drive, power suppl , SCSI (HD50)
to USB adapter cable, ORB Installation Suite CD and ORB Quick Installation
Guide.
2. Assign a SCSI ID to your O B drive.
A SCSI ID is an integer, ranging from 0 to 7, each identifies a SCSI device
on the same SCSI chain. ID 7 is used b the SCSI to USB adapter cable.
You can find ORB drives ID switch on the bottom of the drive
as shown in Figure 4. The available IDs for the ORB Drive
are ID 0, 4, 5 and 6. The switch shown in Figure 4 is set to
ID 4. If ou are connecting this drive to a Mac or a Win 2000
(SP2+)/Win XP s stem, the drive has to be set to ID 0 onl .
Note: Remember to power c cle the drive after the SCSI ID
is changed.
3. Connect the HD50 end of the USB
smart cable adapter to the O B
drives SCSI IN connector (left
connector when facing the
rear of the drive).
4. Connect the O B drive power supply.
First, attach the round power connector from the power suppl to the ORB
drive (center, rear of the drive). Then, plug the power suppl into an AC
outlet.
P OBLEM! If the Power/Status LED is not glowing Green or
does not light, refer to Section 3, Troubleshooting.
Caution! Power should not be applied to the O B drive until
the SCSI to O B smart cable is attached to the drive.
Afterwards, the USB connector can be attached to/detached
from your computer system with drive power either on or off.

5. Insert an O B disk into the drive.
Press the Insert/Eject button on the front of the drive. The drive door will
open for aproximatel 5 seconds.
To insert the ORB disk, slide the disk all the wa into our ORB drive. Push
in and then firml press down on the disk until it snaps into place. You can
refer to Section 2.2, Using ORB Disks, for further information about inserting
disks.
Within a few seconds the door should close and the Power/Status LED
should begin flashing Amber.
Within approximatel 15 seconds the Power/Status LED should stop blinking
and will glow Green. This indicates that the disk is mounted and our drive
is read .
P OBLEM!: The disk ejects (does not mount), refer to
Section 3, Troubleshooting.
6. Connect the O B drive to the computer.
Connect the USB connector end of the
SCSI to USB adapter cable to an available
USB port on our computer s stem. A
USB port is labeled with the USB icon.
7. You should see a new removable drive icon in My Computer or
on the Mac desktop.
P OBLEM! If you encounter a problem while installing or
using your O B drive, refer to the Support Center on our

2.1 OPE ATING YOU O B D IVE
Now that ou have successfull installed our ORB drive, ou will soon be able
to make use of the wide range of features and applications that it offers:
Important ecord Storage If ou need a place to keep special
files (confidential information or an other valuable items like product plans
and designs, personnel files, budgets, compan directories, computerized
checkbooks, and tax records), the ORB disk is a perfect solution.
Portable Information With our new ORB drive, ou have the abilit
to store vast amounts of information on a disk slightl larger than a 3 1/2-
inch flopp . This means ou can put an ORB disk and its case and then in
our pocket to take it wherever ou go.
Multimedia The ORBs high capacit makes it the ideal storage device
for CD-ROM, video, and digital images.
Instant Hard Disk Upgrade The ORB drive offers an eas wa
to add an extra 2.2 gigab tes of storage space to our s stem.
Organization If ou have files from man different t pes of sources
and ou want to organize them the ORB disks allows ou to group these
files b storing different t pes of files on different disks.
Hard Drive Back Up The ORB drive presents a simple wa to back
up our hard drive. Just cop important files to the ORB disk, and ou can
access those files at an time.
