Lens Care
Follow the steps listed below to clean the lens:
1. Uncap the lens. If there is dust, debris or particles use a rubber bulb hand dust blower to
remove them. The lens cap protects the lens and should always be attached when not
recording. The Lens Shade prevents extraneous light from entering the lens and protects the
lens when the lens cap is not attached.
2. If there are smudges or fingerprints, clean using lens tissue slightly moistened with lens
cleaning fluid. Bunch up the tissue into a loose ball.!Clean the lens glass with the slightly
moistened lens tissue ball by applying light pressure in a circular motion. Never do this if
debris or small particles are on the lens; it will scratch and damage the glass. Never pour the
lens cleaning fluid directly on the lens glass.!
3.!Check the cleanliness of the lens.
4. Only clean a lens when it is necessary. !

Battery Charging
On the bottom of the hand grip is a switch labeled BATT. OPEN. Push it in the direction of
the arrow and the compartment will open. Insert the battery until it locks in place.
On the left side of the camera there is an access door to several inputs. Open the door
and insert the charger cable into the access marked DC IN. A power charging indicator
light on the top of the hand grip will illuminate. Camera batteries cannot be charged while
the camera is on AC power use. Turn the camera off to charge batteries.

Only use Canon LP-E6N batteries.

Camera Power and Manual Operation
On the top of the handle you will see a dial for selecting the shooting mode of the
camera. Set the wheel to M, which indicates the camera will be in a manual mode
allowing you to make all decisions. Additionally, make sure the lever surrounding the
red Start/Stop button is set to the motion picture camera icon (Cine Mode).
When you are ready to power up the camera, with a fully charged battery, depress the
ON/OFF switch quickly and the camera will be ready for recording.

Programming the Camera System
Your cinematography instructor will load the USC SCA Required Settings into each
camera during class. You will save these settings on your smaller (2, 4 or 8 gb) SD
card. This card is not for recording footage, only as an emergency back-up if settings
are accidentally changed or default to those set by the factory.

Initializing Data Cards
It is essential to initialize your 64gb SD card before recording begins. This process
should be repeated anytime a new card is used in the camera. Initializing is also
necessary to clear old footage from a card and permit new footage to be
recorded.
USC SCA Guide to the Canon XC15 P. 6
On the left side of frame you should see the number 1 next to a six sided icon. (This is the
Look selection for filming in this class.) Make sure this is set on 1.
On the right side of frame the first icon is ISO.
ISO is a setting that adjusts the camera’s sensitivity to light. Press that button and a sliding
scale appears at the bottom of the frame. The native ISO of the camera is 500, which is the
optimal setting for this camera.
The second icon is K (which stands for Kelvin Scale).
Press this button and you will see White Balance. On the right of that is a box with opposing
arrows. Press that button. Now you will see a sliding scale, which allows you to adjust the
color temperature of your image. Your instructors will explain.
The third icon is for Touch Focus (it looks like an eye).
Press this button and you will see a frame appear on the image (about 60% of it). If you touch
anywhere within the frame the camera will automatically focus the camera on that part of the
frame.
The fourth icon is Magnification.
If you press the OK button on the bottom of the frame the picture will become magnified
allowing you easier manual focus.
The fifth icon is for Zebras.
Push this button and you will have 3 choices. Off, 70, 100. Zebras are a tool that measures
the brightness of areas in the frame. They reference information provided by the wave form
monitor.
Menu Options
The Function Menu Pressing the Func. icon will bring up the screen to the right, below.

The FUNC. menu contains camera-related functions. The icon of each function’s current
settings appear on both sides of the menu. The left side uses functions used prior to
shooting while the right contains functions that can be used while shooting.

Press the scroll down button for more options.
The sixth icon is for Image stabilization (icon is a wavy hand).
This setting is useful during hand held work. Turn it off when working on a tripod.
The seventh icon is SHTR (shutter).
Press this button and you will see a sliding scale at the bottom of the frame. The numbers
indicate Shutter Angles. The angle determines the speed of the shutter when it is operating
during recording. Normally the USC SCA Required Settings Assign it to 180.00 which gives
us a shutter speed of 1/48 of a second at 24 frames per second. Shutter angle is critical to
how we view motion. Your instructor will train and inform you more about this subject. For
now leave it at 180.00, the USC SCA required setting.
The eighth icon is IRIS (also known as aperture).
Your lens has an adjustable iris, just like your eye. It closes down in bright light and opens up
when light is dim. We call this the aperture. It is measured in F Stops. Each F Stop allows
more or less light onto the sensor.
The dial on the hand grip between the on/off and record button is also set to adjust the iris
(aperture or F Stop). This is more accessible than going into the menu.
The ninth icon is for Microphone Level (auto or manual).
You will be issued an external microphone and your sound instructor will provide you with
details regarding the audio settings.
By selecting the manual setting you will be able to adjust the level of volume of the internal
microphone.
Pressing the X in the box on the top right of the screen will take you out of the function menu.
