GENERAL OPERATION:
All controls are located on the back of the PARTNER1.
The PARTNER1 augmentative communicator is a self-contained communication device, which permits the user to record and playback 1
message of 32 seconds in length. Graphic overlays (picture cards) can be easily changed by simply sliding the overlay between the housing grid
and the message square through the slot on the top of the grid. Simple to operate, just turn the unit on, adjust the volume and push the picture to
activate the message.
BATTERY INSTALLATION
1. Make sure that the PARTNER1 is turned off. Set VOLUME control switch fully to the right, until it clicks off.
2. Turn the PARTNER1 over and lay the front of the unit on a flat stable surface.
3. To gain access to the battery compartment and expose the batteries, remove the two screws holding down the plastic battery
cover on the bottom of the unit.
4. Remove the old batteries and discard them in accordance with your local recycling laws.
5. Install the new batteries observing the proper polarity and using 4 new AAA batteries.
6. Then replace the battery compartment cover by placing the cover over the access hole and tighten down the two screws. Insure
the battery cover is secure.
RECORD OPERATION:
Note: It is important during any recording operation that the built in microphone located at the back of the PARTNER1 is clear and
open. 1. Turn the PARTNER1 ON. Turn the VOLUME control switch clockwise, until it clicks ON.
2. Set the VOLUME control, turning to the left, until it reaches the center of the range.
3. Depress and hold in the built-in recording button. The recording button must be engaged for the entire recording process.
4. Press and hold down the message square on the face of the PARTNER1, then begin to say your message into the built-in
microphone located at the back of the PARTNER1 (see diagram –BACK VIEW). For the best results, you should speak
directly into the microphone and be about 6 to 9 inches away from it in a quiet room.
INPUT AND OUTPUT JACKS:
The Partner1 comes fully equipped with 2 external control jacks (see diagram –BACK VIEW), 1 - Input and 1 - Output. The two control jacks
on the back of the unit correspond to the message square on the front of the Partner1.
INPUT JACK:
The first jack labeled IN on the back of the Partner1 is an Input jack (see diagram –BACK VIEW for jack
locations). It is for activating the message square through an external switch. When the switch plugged into
the Input jack is activated, the message programmed into the message square will play.

OUTPUT JACK:
The jack labeled OUT on the back of the Partner1 is an Output jack used to control a low voltage DC
device. When the message square is depressed, the jack labeled OUT is shorted and a low voltage device
plugged into that jack will be activated.
PLAYBACK OPERATION:
1. Turn the PARTNER1 ON. Turn the VOLUME control switch to the left, until it clicks ON.
2. Set the VOLUME control, turning to the left, until the desired playback volume is reached.
3. Press the message square on the face of the PARTNER1 and the message will play.
OVERLAY DESIGN AND LAYOUT:
There are several methods you can use to make overlays for the PARTNER1.
1. Draw or print a corresponding icon or words on a sheet of 3.75” by 4.75” paper.
2. Develop your custom overlay using Mayer Johnson’s BOARDMAKER™ Software.
CLEANING THE PARTNER1
Note: DO NOT SUBMURGE THE PARTNER1 IN WATER... THE PARTNER1 IS WATER RESISTANT - NOT WATER PROOF.
1. Turn the PARTNER1 off.
2. Remove the overlay from the switch grid.
3. With a wet wash cloth and mild soap wipe the soiled areas clean.
4. To rinse, use a wet sponge (cold water) and wipe away the soapy area. DO NOT SUBMURGE under the water and do not
allow water to enter the external speaker, record jack or speaker holes.
Care and Maintenance
The PARTNER1 is designed to automatically power down after a message is played. However, the power down mode is still an active mode and
drains some power from the battery, affecting battery life. Therefore, if the PARTNER1 is not going to be used for a long period (2 to 3 hours) it
is recommended that the unit be turned off.
If the PARTNER1 fails to operate, or operates incorrectly, follow these steps
1. Check if the batteries are installed correctly.
2. Check if the PARTNER1 is ON and a Message has been recorded. Also make sure there are no obstacles blocking the message
membrane switch
3. Turn the PARTNER1 OFF for 15 Seconds, then back ON and retry playback.
4. Replace the Batteries.
