Ifthethermometerissubjectedtostrongambienttemperaturevariations,•
wait20minutesafterstabilizationbeforeresumingmeasurement.
To avoid errors in measurements, do not expose the thermometer to•
strongmagneticorelectricalelds(inductionheating,arc-weldingset,
etc.).

1.1 International Electrical Symbols
Signifies that the instrument is protected by double or reinforced insulation.
This symbol on the instrument indicates a WARNING that the operator must
refer to the user manual for instructions before operating the instrument. In
this manual, the symbol preceding instructions indicates that if the instructions
are not followed, bodily injury, installation/sample and/or product damage may
result.

2.1 Description
TheInfraredThermometerModelCA879isanon-contacttemperaturemeasuring
instrument.Itprovidesprecisionmeasurementwithitslasertargetfeature.
Tomeasurethetemperatureofanobject,simplypointthegunatthesurfaceofthe
objectandthetemperaturewillappearonthedigitaldisplay.Thethermometerhas
anautomaticshut-offfeature.Shut-offwilloccurapproximately10secondsafter
thetriggerisreleased.
2.2 Emissivity
Allobjectswhosetemperatureishigherthanabsolutezero(-273.15°K)emitinfra-
redenergy.Thisenergyradiatesinalldirectionsatthespeedoflight.Whenthe
gunispointedatanobject,theprobe’slenssensesthisenergyandfocusesitonto
aninfrareddetectorcomprisedofathermocouplestack.Thedetectorproducesa
voltagesignalproportionaltotheamountofenergyreceived,andthereforepropor-
tionaltotheobject’stemperature.
Certainobjectsemitinfraredenergy,butalsoreectit.Unlikemattsurfaces,shiny
orhighly-polishedsurfacestendtoreectenergy.Thisreectionisrepresentedby
afactorcalledemissivity,whichmayvaryfrom0.1forahighlyreectiveobjectto
1foraatblackobject.InthecaseoftheModelCA879thermometer,theemis-
sivityispresetat0.95,themostfrequentvalue,enablingapproximately90%ofall
applicationstobecovered.

4.1 Precautions for use

possibletothesurface(lessthan15"[40cm]away)Ifthesurfacetobemeasured
iscoveredinfrostorotherparticles,cleanitsothatitisproperlyexposed,before
takingameasurement.
Ifthesurfacetobemeasuredishighlyreective,applymatttapeorpainttothe
surfacebeforemeasuring.Ifthethermometerappearstobegivingincorrectindi-
cations,checktheconditionofthe lensat themeasurementopening,asitmay
beobscuredbycondensationorparticles.Ifso,cleanitbycarefullyfollowingthe
instructionsin§5.
4.2 Ratio Between Distance from Target/Diameter
of Measurement Field
Thisratio,alsocalledtheeldofvision,indicatesthediameterofthe•
measurementeldatagivendistancefromthetarget;
D/S=12:1(D=distance,S=spot).
Whenmeasuringsmallerareas,itisimportanttobringtheprobesufciently•
closetothetargettoavoidincludingotherpointsinthemeasurementeld.

4.3 Operating Test
For a quick verication that the thermometer is functioning correctly, point it at
watercontainingicecubes,sincethisprovidesasimplereferencefor32°F(0°C).
4.4 Operating Procedure
WARNING: Never point the LASER target beam at someone's eyes!
1. Activatethelaserbybrieydepressingthetrigger.
2. Congurethe instrument with the help of theLASER and BACKLIGHTING
buttons.
3. Selectameasurementunit.
4. Pointthethermometerattheobjectwhosetemperatureyouwishtomeasure,
withorwithoutusingtheLASERtarget.
5. Press the trigger to measure the temperature. If you hold the trigger in
this position, the thermometer will continuously measure variations in
temperature.
6. Releasethetrigger.Thedisplayedvalueisthelastvaluemeasured.
NOTE: Theinstrumentautomaticallyshutsdownafterafewseconds(10seconds
approx),storingthelastcongurationinitsmemory.
