OWNER’S MANUAL
Note: For both your enjoyment and
safety, please take a few minutes to
properly read this owner’s manual.
First, may we thank you for choosing a valve preamplifier
from A.R.I.A. Advanced Research in Audio srl.
Your new preamplifier is the result of many years of
electronic design experience allied to a thorough understanding
of electronic tubes. But more than that, it is the fruit of our
passion, and of our wish to create products to give musical
enjoyment and lasting value, in which the traditional
craftsman’s skill is blended with advanced electronic design.
Each and every one of our products is built using the best
and most trusted materials, before being subjected to rigorous
testing and final inspection.
All the wood parts are hand made in solid wood by expert
craftsmen, and finished exclusively with natural organic
lacquers. As well as giving a very pleasing appearance to the
eye, the wood also benefits sound quality by helping to dampen
resonance in the metal chassis .

1 - UNPACKING
First of all, please make sure the carton is sealed and the
equipment has not suffered any damage in transit. If you notice
any signs of damage, consult your Authorized Dealer before
attempting to operate the unit.
To protect delicate parts against shocks during transport,
valves are normally packed separately.
Please refer to the installation instructions for valves
contained in this Owners’ Manual.
IMPORTANT!
When unpacking an equipment which is cold, allow it
to stand for sufficient time (not less than 2 hours) to reach
normal room temperature before attempting to operate it.
This precaution will allow any condensation which may
have formed on the electronic parts to fully dissipate.
Keep the original carton and packing material in a safe
place. You will need it if you have to send the unit for service,
or transport it for any other reason.
2 - PLACEMENT AND VALVE INSTALLATION
IMPORTANT
Always fit all the valves into their corresponding sockets,
also the phono stage valves, even if is not utilized .
Every time is necessary carry on or send the unit is
reccommendable remove the valves, also the phono stage valve
and fix the phono board.

4
Fit the line stage valves (V1, V2, V3, V4) into their socket,
respect the position of the guide (or pins) which ensure the
correct orientation for each valve.
For fit the phono stage valve please follow the procedure
indicate below:
-remove the cover as indicate on point “6”;
-(in the case of first installation) remove the white stuff
positioned inside the cover and cut the two plastic
clamp used for mantain the phono stage on the front
corners;
-respect the position of the guide which ensure the
correct orientation for each valve;
-installed on V5R and V5L the teflon ring supply ( one
for each valve);
-Place again the cover on the unit.
When fitting (or removing) valves, use firm but gentle
pressure.
Never use force!
3 - INSTALLATION
The unit should be placed on a safe, stable surface, completely
out of reach of children, adults with serious learning
disabilities, or pets. Adequate ventilation is required above and
around the unit. Take care not to expose the unit to either high
temperatures or humidity.
The valves, mainly the valves dedicates to the phono stage
(high gain stage) are sensibility to the impact and to the
mechanics vibrations. It’s better to place the unit at suitable
distance from the speakers (2 metres , and behind the speakers).

5
The input / output connectors are placed on the rear of the
panel.
IMPORTANT
Please make sure that all the sources, preamplifier and power
amplifier are switched off before done every input or output
connection.
For all inputs and outputs is possible used unbalanced
connectors.
For two of line input are available balanced connection instead
of the unbalanced, is necessary done the selection with the
dedicated switch place on the rear panel.
The unbalanced and balanced output, must be used alternative,
we suggest use balanced connections only in the case the
connecting cables are longer than 5 metres. The default provide
the use of the unbalalnced output, for modify the selection
please follow the instruction indicate at the point “7”.
On the rear panel there are two connectors that allow the
connection with the power amplifier REFERENCE, with
special cable supply, in the case you done those connections the
preamplifier switch on automatically the amplifiers.
The phono stages have selectable input impedance, so can be
use with all types of cartridge, the impedance selection and the
gain is done by micro-switches as is indicate on the printing.
The turntable earth connection must be connected to golden
binding post with GDN placed near the phono inputs.
4 - CONNECTION TO MAINS
Before connecting the main cable and switching on, make sure
that your local power supply voltage correspond to the value
shown on the rear panel of the unit.

6
Never connect the unit to a mains supply of a different
voltage than that shown on the unit!
Mains fuses are located in the IEC mains imput socket located
on the rear of the unit. The correct value is indicated on the rear
panel and also in the technical specifications at the end of this
manual.
If you need to replace a mains fuse, always use one of the
same type and rating!
5 - OPERATION
Before switching on, verify all the input / output connections
are done.
Before switching on, ensure the volume control is at the
minimum ( fully anti-clockwise) position.
After switching on, allow around 30 second for the valves to
stabilise and begin operating before turning up the volume
control.
The unit will give its best listening performance when fully
warmed-up, which takes around 15 minutes from switch-on.
When switching between source signals, and before switching
the unit off, make sure that the volume control is at zero.
On the front panel of the unit there are two bicouloured led (one
on the left , one on the right) and five knobs have (left to right)
those function: switch on/off , selector, volume control, anti-
rumble filter activation for phono imputs, mute/tape/monitor.
After the switching on the left led is orange, is the strat of
warm-up phase, after 5 and 10 seconds the REFERENCE
power amplifiers will be switched on (if they are connected
with the special cables supply), after 45 seconds the
preamplifier operate (the led become green).

7
The right led indicate the state of the unit : green “ source” ,
red “muting” (-20dB inputs) and orange “monitor”.
Every time the inputs or the rumble-filter change, the unit
automatically have 2 seconds of muting, in this period the right
led switch off and the output decrease of 20dB to avoid noise
during the commutation.
We suggest to put the potentiometer at minimum position,
before switching off the unit.
6 - REMOTE USE
The preamplifier is supply with radio remote for the volume
control.
Replace the battery only with other of the same type .
The remote grant the better function, when is used at a distance
not less then 2 metres from the unit.
Othe equipments (mobile phone, antenna ect.) can interfere
with the operating of the remote.
7 - TOP COVER REMOVE
IMPORTANT!
The following operations must be done by authorized
service centre
For remove the cover is necessary done the operation below

and wait minumum 30 seconds before start operate;
-remove the back side of the bottom of the unit;
-find the print on the board “LINEA_L”, the jumper
SJ301 and SJ302 (on the back side);
-when the jumper are open is possible to use only the
unbalanced outputs, when SJ301 and SJ302 are close
with the bridges supply, must use the balanced outputs;
-close the unit, replace the bottom and fit with the
screws.
9 – FUSES

9
Inside the unit there are 2 fuses
F200 = 500m AT/250V
F 250= 500m AT/250V
The value for the mains fuses are :
5AT/250V voltage 100V/120V/130V
2AT/250V voltage 220V/230V/240V
always replace fuse with fuse of the same type.
10 - SAFETY AND MAINTENANCE
Do not open the amplifier!
High voltages are present inside! There are no user
serviceable parts inside, and all service operations should be
undertaken only by an Authorized Service Centre.
