Revision B 000
As R&P instrumentation changes, so do our Operating and Service manuals. How
ever, these changes may affect only one aspect of an instrument, while leaving the
instrument as a whole unchanged. To explain these individual changes to customers,
R&P will update only those sections of its Operating and Service manuals that are
affected by the instrument updates or improvements. As each manual section changes,
so does its revision number, which is located at the top right corner of each page of each
section.
To help customers keep track of the changes to the Partisol Model 2000 Air Sampler
and its service manual, following is a list of the manual sections with their respective
revision numbers:

SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION PAGE 1-1
Revision B 000
The information contained in this manual will allow the user to do preliminary
troubleshooting to fix some problems or to give the maximum amount of information
available to the factory.
1.1. OVERVIEW OF MANUAL
Section 1 : Introduction
This section provides an overview of the Service Manual.
Section 2 : Troubleshooting Guides
This section contains troubleshooting guides in the form of flow charts to aid the user
when performing diagnostics.

to maintain consistent operation of the Partisol sampler. In addition, this section
contains procedures describing installation of system components if exchange is
necessary.
Section 4 : Electronic Schematic Diagrams
This section contains schematic diagrams and interconnect diagrams of the major
electronic components in the instrument.
Section 5 : R&P Return Policy

Revision B 000
Section 2: Troub eshooting Guides
This section contains troubleshooting guides in the form of flow charts to aid the user
when performing diagnostics. This section should be used in conjunction with the
electrical schematics located in Section 4. Read Section 2.1 before using any of the
troubleshooting guides.
2.1. USING THE TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDES
The troubleshooting guides give the user a logical succession of steps to follow when
diagnosing a problem. Following is a list of the questions most commonly asked by
users with regard to the guides.
2.1.1. WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
The main piece of equipment needed is a multimeter (that measures DC and AC
voltages and resistance) with at least a 4 digit resolution.
2.1.2. WHERE DO I START?
Look at the main screen of the Partisol Model 2000 Air Sampler. Any active errors
will be indicated in the upper left corner. Possible error codes are:
OK Great! You have no errors!
E Power Failure — A system power failure occurred during sampling.
F Flow Out of Range — The measured sample flow rate through the
sample filter deviated by more than 7% from its setpoint for more than
1 minute.
T Ambient Temperature Sensor — The ambient temperature sensor
was not installed correctly or indicated an invalid value. The ambient
temperature must be between 40°C and 60°C to be valid.
P Ambient Pressure Sensor — The ambient pressure sensor indicated
an invalid value. The ambient pressure must be greater than 0.4
atmospheres to be valid.
I Electronics Compartment Temperature — The temperature of the
instrument electronics compartment was outside of its usual operat
ing range. The electronics temperature must be between 5°C and
60°C or the electronics may not operate reliably.

2.1.3. I HAVE CHOSEN A FLOW CHART TO BEGIN WITH. NOW WHAT?
Now that you have chosen a particular flow chart, begin in the upper left corner of the
chart and follow the “flow” of instructions until you can go no further. These
instructions will bring you through a logical succession of steps to help you determine
where the problem is and what to do about it. Document the result of each step as it
is completed. This information is important if R&P is contacted.
2.1.4. HOW DO I CHECK A CABLE’S CONTINUITY?
Throughout the flow charts are instructions which indicate that a cable’s continuity
should be checked. You must check a cable’s continuity to verify that a particular
cable has not been damaged.
Fo ow these steps to check a cab e’s continuity:
1) Set the mu timeter so it wi measure resistance (
W
).
2) Determine which cab e you are checking and ocate its corre-
sponding connectors.
3) Refer to the interconnect diagrams in Section 4 to determine
which pins are connected from one connector to the other. (For
examp e, is pin 1 on one connector connected to pin 1 on the
other connector or to a different pin?)
4) P ace one ead of the mu timeter on the first pin on one of the
connectors and p ace the other ead on the corresponding pin of
the other connector. The resistance shou d be very c ose to zero
if the continuity is correct.
5) Repeat steps 2-4 for each set of pins being checked.
2.1.5. HOW DO I LOCATE A TEST POINT ON AN ELECTRONIC BOARD?
Refer to the schematic diagrams for the electronics in Section 4. A drawing of the
interface board is included in this section and test points are labeled.
2.1.6. HOW DO I FIND PIN 1?
There are four types of connectors used on the Partisol Monitor, “D” type connectors,
ribbon cable connectors, 2 , 4 and 10 pin Molex connectors and round 3 , 4 and 6
pin connectors.
