INTRODUCTION

Congratulations !

You have just purchased one of the world’s most

sophisticated radar and laser detectors.

Please read this instruction manual before installation.

All instructions are necessary to achieve optimum use

and trouble-free performance from your BTST.

BTST FEATURES

1. ON/OFF and Dim button (PWR)

Press to switch the BTST ON/OFF. To select

between the different display brightness options,

hold this button down for 2 seconds.

2. Volume buttons (_/_)

Hold down to adjust the volume of the alarm

tones.

3. MUTE button

Silences the audio alert.

4. City/Highway button (CITY)

Decreases the sensitivity to radar signals when

CITY-mode is engaged.

5. Speaker

INSTALLATION

A. GENERAL GUIDELINES

• Mount the detector so that the receiving window/

sensor has an un-obstructed view of the road

ahead.

• The BTST can be positioned within 25° of horizontal

without signicantly degrading performance.

• Do not mount directly behind windscreen wipers.

• Do not mount behind a mirrored sunscreen, as

it has a thin layer of aluminium on a plastic lm

which will block radar/laser signals. If you have a

heat reective screen, you should have a ‘GPS

Gap’ by the interior mirror where you can mount

the BTST.

B. MOUNTING TYPES

We have provided 2 types of mounting methods.

1) DASHBOARD MOUNTING (Illustration II)

• The hook and loop fastener Velcro tape provided

may be used to mount your detector on a at

dashboard.

The dashboard must be clean and dry

for the fastener to adhere properly.

• Clean the dashboard with common rubbing alcohol

to remove dirt and grease.

• Attach the tape and press the BTST into the desired

position on the dashboard.

2) WINDSCREEN MOUNTING (Illustration III)

• I

nsert the suction cups into the windscreen bracket.

• Clean the area of the windscreen and slightly

moisten the suction cups.

• Insert the bracket into the BTST. Press the Lock/

Unlock button (9) to make sure the bracket clicks

into place.

• You can now attach the BTST with the suction

cups on the windscreen.

• If you need to change the angle, please do so by

rst removing the BTST and bending the bracket. If

you try to bend the bracket with the BTST attached,

it will damage the BTST.

FOR BEST PERFORMANCE WINDSCREEN MOUNTING

IS RECOMMENDED!

FOR MODERN WINDSHIELDS (WITH METAL

FILM), PLEASE MOUNT THE BTST IN THE ‘GPS-

GAP’ USING THE LONGER HOLDER/SUPPORT. IN

THIS CASE, MAKE SURE YOU MOUNT THE BTST

UPSIDE DOWN.

C. POWER CONNECTION

The BTST is designed to operate from the normal 12Volt

electrical system and must be used with a negative

ground electrical system. Do not operate your BTST on

positive ground electrical system. Consult your vehicle

owners’ manual if you are not certain of its polarity.

• After you position and mount the BTST, insert the

DC power cable into the jack on the detector’s side.

• Remove the vehicle cigarette lighter from its socket

and insert the other end of the power cable into the

lighter socket plug.

• For permanent installation, you can remove the

cigarette lighter plug, take a 1A-fuse and connect

the cables directly.

HOW THE BTST WORKS

A. HOW THE RADAR WORKS

The actual process involved in determining a vehicle’s

speed is simple. It involves directing a beam of

microwave energy at an approaching target vehicle. A

portion of this beam is reected back by the target and

is received by the radar unit that originally transmitted

the signal. The reected signal is shifted in frequency

by an amount proportional to the speed of the target

vehicle.

B. RADAR & LASER FREQUENCIES

The BTST detects:

X-Band 9.90 GHz

Ku-Band 13.450 GHz

K-Band 24.125 GHz

K-Band 24.150 GHz

K-Band 24.220 GHz

Ka-Band 33.40 - 36.00 GHz

Ka-Band 34.30 GHz

Ka-Band 34.36 GHz

Ka-Band 35.70 GHz

This means that you can use it in Europe as well as

the UK.

C. LASER DETECTION

Laser detection is the 10th band that can be detected.

Laser Speed Guns use pulses of infrared laser light

to measure speed of target by timing each pulse

over time as it is reected back to the gun. The BTST

detects laser from ahead as well as from behind.

OPERATION

Power On and Self Test: Each time your BTST is

turned on, an automatic self-test sequence conrms that

the speaker and visual displays are functional. During

power up, all alerts are illuminated, while the X, K, Ka

and Ku alerts are sounded in sequence. Immediately

after the radar alerts, the laser alert is sounded.

City Mode is designed to reduce the annoyance of

automatic door openers, intruder alarms and other

devices that share frequencies with police radar.

Simply press ‘CITY’ once to engage this mode, and

press it again to disengage.

In City Mode, weak radar signals give an initial alarm

of one beep and then remain quiet unless the signal

becomes stronger. When the signal strength does

increase, further alerts sound.

Motorway Mode provides full warnings any time radar

or laser signals are detected, and is recommended for

open road driving.

Mute Mode may be accessed by either pressing the

‘MUTE’ button before or during an alert.

Night Driving Mode accesses two dimming modes:

a. Dim Mode: Reduces the intensity of the display.

Hold the ‘PWR’ button down for 2 seconds to

access this mode.

b. Audio Only Mode: Switches off the visual alerts

and only uses audio alerts. Hold the ‘PWR’ button

down for a further 2 seconds to access this mode.

To revert to Normal mode, hold the ‘PWR’ button

down for a further 2 seconds.

ALERT TYPES

! Very quick beep rate instantly = Full Warning. A

Radar or Laser source has suddenly been switched on.

! Starts to beep slowly, then increases in rate rapidly

= Full Warning. Probably Police Radar.

! Beeps once or slowly and infrequently = Most

likely a ‘False’ alert caused by a weak Radar signal.

However, you should still exercise caution in case it

is a distant signal from a mobile trap, which is being

switched on and off.

Pulse Protection is more difcult to detect than a

normal radar because it remains “off” until activated

to measure the speed of a targeted vehicle. When a

pulse type transmission is detected, the BTST detector

sounds an urgent 3 second pulse alert. The standard

alert pattern then continues for as long as the signal

is present. It is vital to respond quickly to a pulse alert

(hence the distinct urgent pulse alert) as warning time

may be minimal.

SELECTING BANDS

We recommend using your BTST in the default mode.

However, to select between different radar bands, you

should hold down ‘CITY’ for 2 seconds. The display

will then show the current settings. Use the ‘MUTE’,

‘Volume Down’ and ‘Volume Up’ buttons to select or

de-select the various bands. Note that Laser detection

cannot be turned off.

If you want to just use the BTST as a Laser detector (for

mobile speed traps only), then just turn all Radar bands off.

Once you have made your selections, press the ‘CITY’

button again to select which tones you would like.

Use the ‘MUTE’, ‘Volume Down’ and ‘Volume Up’

buttons to select Tone set I, II or III.

Once you have chosen, press the ‘PWR’ button to

return to normal mode.

TEST

To test the tone and display for each band, hold down

the ‘CITY’ and ‘MUTE’ buttons simultaneously for 2

seconds. To go back to normal mode, just press the

‘PWR’ button again.

To test the indication of each signal, you press the

‘CITY’ and ‘MUTE’ key simultaneously. If you press

the ON/OFF key (PWR), you go back to Standby-mode.

RESET

This action makes it possible to undo all settings and to

go back to default settings.

• Keep the ON/OFF (PWR) and the ‘MUTE’ key

pressed simultaneously.

• Turn the unit on by connecting the cigar lighter plug.

• Wait a moment until you hear 2 small beeps.

• Release the ON/OFF (PWR) and the ‘MUTE’ key.

MAINTENANCE

To keep your detector in good condition, follow these

simple steps:

• Never leave the set on the visor, windshield or

dashboard when you park your vehicle.

• Do not expose the unit to moisture.

• Always unplug the power cable or turn off the

power when not in use.

If your unit does not work, we advise you to complete

following checks:

• Is the power cord properly plugged in at both ends?

• Is the fuse OK?

•

Is the ON/OFF key (PWR) used to switch the unit ON

FUSE REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

• Press the top of the fuse holder down and rotate it

anti-clockwise approx. 30°. Lift the top straight up.

• Remove the fuse and replace if required by one of

the same rating. The silver tip contains a spring,

which may y off when disassembling. The fuse

should be inserted before the spring.

• Place the top of the fuse-holder back on the body.

Press down and rotate the top of the fuse holder

clockwise approx. 30°.

NOTE :

• Failing to press the top of the fuse holder down

prior to rotating it will damage the fuse holder. Use

of pliers to rotate the top may also cause damage.

• Illustration indicates the direction that the fuse

holder top must be rotated to reassemble.

WARRANTY

Please retain this Owner’s Manual as proof of

purchase. BTST Detectors are extremely reliable, but

in the unlikely event that you have to return it during the

warranty period, please send your name and address

plus a description of the fault to your retailer, along with

this Owner’s Manual. Please note that if you bought via

mail-order, the name and address you submit should

match the name and address to which the unit was

originally shipped.

LEGALITY

It is the users responsibility to be aware of the law in

relation to the use of your Radar and Laser detector in

whichever region of the world you are in.

BTST TROUBLE-SHOOTING GUIDE

“The BTST does not appear to pick up Mobile

Police vans/cameras”

The vast majority of such cameras/guns work on Laser

pulse technology and DO NOT emit a signal unless

they are rst aimed directly at your vehicle and then

switched on. The police would only usually do this if

you appear to be speeding visually. Therefore, you will

not pick up a signal by just driving past a mobile unit.

If a device is aimed at you, the BTST will alert you

IMMEDIATELY and you have 3 seconds to slow down

before the Lidar gun gets a speed reading.

“The BTST does not appear to pick up Gatso

Camera’s until it is level with them”

There are several possible reasons and solutions to

this problem:

1 – Gatso Shields

Many Gatso’s now have a shield in an attempt to

prevent speed camera detectors from picking them up.

They still emit a signal backwards but it is much weaker

than usual. The signal strength varies from camera to

camera and you tend to nd many shielded cameras in

close proximity to each other. The BTST can still detect

these cameras at a good range (50 – 100 meters) but

NOT when it is in City Mode.

Please make sure that it is NOT in City Mode (when

the red “C” is showing). City mode is designed to

cut out many unwanted false alerts and dramatically

decreases sensitivity. It should ONLY be used to cut

out ‘false’ alerts around town when you are driving

comfortably within the speed limit.
