TheseinstructionsapplytotheSimpsonDura-VentDirectVentSystem,Model

DV-GS.Thisventingsystem,incombinationwiththegasappliance,hasbeentested

andlistedasadecorativegasappliancesystem,orasadirectventheatersystem

byamajortestingagencysuchasUL,AGA,CGA,OmniorWarnockHersey.

Checkthemanufacturer'sratingplateandinstructionmanualtoconfirmthatthe

SimpsonDura-Ventdirectventsystemisapprovedforuseonthebrandname

applianceyouhaveselected.

IMPORTANT

Readallinstructionscarefullybeforestartingtheinstallation. Failuretofollowthese

instructionsmaycreateafireorothersafetyhazard,andwillvoidthewarranty. Be

suretochecktheappliancemanufacturer'sinstallationinstructionsforspecific

ventingandclearancetocombustiblerequirements,whichmayvaryfromone

appliance to another. Do not extend the venting system vertically or

horizontally in excess of the distance prescribed in the appliance

manufacturer'sinstallationinstructions.

INSTALLATIONPRECAUTIONS

TheSimpsonDura-VentDirectVentSystemisanengineeredproductthathasbeen

designedandtestedforusewithanapprovedlistofdirectventfireplaces. The

SimpsonDura-Ventwarrantywillbevoided,andseriousfire,health,orothersafety

hazardsmayresultfromanyofthefollowingactions:

•InstallationofanydamagedDirectVentcomponent.

•UnauthorizedmodificationoftheDirectVentSystem

•Installationofanycomponentpartnotmanufacturedorapprovedby

SimpsonDura-Vent.

•InstallationotherthanasinstructedbySimpsonDura-Ventandthe

appliancemanufacturer.

VENTING INSTRUCTIONS

FOR DIRECT VENT

FIREPLACES

Consultyourlocalbuildingcodesbeforebeginningtheinstallation.

WARNING

• Always maintain required clearances (air spaces) to nearby

combustiblestopreventafirehazard. Donotfillairspaceswithinsulation.

Besuretochecktheappliancemanufacturers'sinstallationinstructionsforminimum

clearancerequirementsbetweentheouterwallsof

the vent pipe and nearby combustible surfaces. Be sure to check the vent

terminationclearancerequirementsfromdecks,windows,soffits,gasregulators,

airsupplyinlets,andpublicwalkways,asspecifiedintheseinstallation

instructionsandlocalbuildingcodes.

• The fireplace and vent system must be vented directly to the

outsideofthebuilding. Eachdirectventfireplacemustuseit'sownseparatevent

system. Commonventsystemsareprohibited.

PARTSLIST

TheSimpsonDura-VentDirectVentSystemoffersacompletelineofcomponent

partsforinstallationofbothhorizontalandverticalinstallations. Thegalvanizedpipe

and fittings are used for concealed locations such as attics, or spaces where

corrosionisafactor,suchasabovetheroofline. Snorkelterminationsareavailable

forapplicationswhichmayrequireverticalriseonthebuildingexterior.

PLANNINGYOURINSTALLATION

TherearetwobasictypesofDirectVentSysteminstallations. Checktheappliance

manufacturer'sinstallationinstructionstoconfirmwhattypesarepermitted,andalso

checkforanyventingrestrictionssuchasmaximumhorizontalrun,andmaximum

verticalrise. Thetwotypesofinstallationsare:

•Horizontal Termination(Fig1andFig2)

•Vertical Termination(Fig3)

Whenplanningyourinstallation,itwillbenecessarytoselecttheproperlengthof

ventpipeforyourparticularrequirements. Forhorizontalinstallations,checkthe

appliancemanufacturers'sinstallationsinstructionstodeterminetheminimum

clearancefromtherearoftheappliancetothewall. Itisalsoimportanttonotethe

wallthickness. Selecttheamountofverticalrisedesiredfor"vertical-to-horizontal"

type installations. To determine the length of vent pipe required for vertical

installations,measurethedistancefromtheapplianceflueoutlettotheceiling,the

ceilingthickness,theverticalriseinanatticorsecondstory, andallowforsufficient

ventheightabovetheroofline. Fortwo-storyapplications,firestopsarerequired

ateachfloorlevel. Ifanoffsetisneededintheattic,additionalpipeandelbowswill

berequired.

HORIZONTALINSTALLATION

Step1. Setthefireplaceinit'sdesiredlocation. Checktodetermineifwall

studsorroofraftersareinthewaywhentheventingsystemisattached. Ifthisis

thecase,youmaywanttoadjustthelocationoftheappliance.

Step2. DirectVentpipeandfittingsaredesignedwithspecialtwist-lock

connections. Toconnecttheventingsystemtotheapplianceflueoutlet,atwist-lock

applianceadaptorisrequired. Withsomebrandsofappliances,theSimpsonDura-

Ventadaptorwillbebuiltintotheapplianceatthefactory. Withotherbrands, it

willbesuppliedbythe appliancemanufacturer,forinstallationinthefield. Assemble

thedesiredcombinationofpipeandelbowstotheapplianceadaptorwithpipe

seamsorientedtowardsthewallorfloor,asmuchoutofviewaspossible. Ifthe

applianceadaptorisnotbuiltintotheapplianceatthefactory,itmaybepreferable

toassemblethepipeandelbowstotheadaptorpriortomountingtheadaptoronto

thefireplace. Inthismanner,thepipeand45°elbowassemblymaybeproperly

twist-lockedandrotatedtofacethewalltermination,withfinalpositioningofthe

ventpipeassemblydeterminedbythemountingorientationoftheapplianceadaptor

ontothefireplace. Figure4showssomeofthepossibleventpathwayoptions.

Consulttheappliancemanufacturerforanyrestrictions.

(1)Twist-lockprocedure: Fourindentations,locatedonthefemaleends

ofpipesandfittings,aredesignedtoslidestraightontothemaleendsofadjacent

pipesandfittings,byorienting

thefourpipeindentationssothey

match and slide into the four

entryslotsonthemaleends.(Fig

5). Pushthepipesectionscom-

pletelytogether,thentwist-lock

onesectionclockwiseapproxi-

matelyone-quarterturn,untilthe

twosectionsarefullylocked.

manufacturer. Shouldyouelecttouse

sealant,itisonlynecessaryontheouter

tube of the GS Pipe. Run a 1/8-inch

widebeadofsealantaroundthemale

end of the outer sleeve, as shown in

Figure5, and twist-lockthe pipesor

fittingstogether.

Step 3. With the adaptor and

pipeattachedtothefireplace,slidethe

fireplaceintoit'scorrectlocation,and

markthewallforasquareholeofthe

appropriatesize. Usea10"x10" square

holefor7"x4"pipeandusean11"x11"

squareholefor8"x5"pipe. Thecenter

ofthesquareholeshouldlineupwith

thecenterlineofthehorizontalpipe,asshowninFigure6. Cutandframethesquare

hole in the exterior wall where the vent will be terminated. If the wall being

penetrated is constructed of noncombustible material, i.e. masonry block or

concrete,aholewithzeroclearancetothepipeisacceptable.

Notes:

(1) Thehorizontalrunofventmustbelevel, orhavea1/4-inchriseforevery

1footofruntowardsthetermination. Neverallowtheventtorundownward. This

couldcausehightemperaturesandmaypresentthepossibilityofafire.

(2)Thelocationofthehorizontalventterminationonanexteriorwallmust

meet all local and national building codes, and must not be easily blocked or

obstructed. Terminationclearancesareasfollows:

(a)Clearanceabovetheground, veranda,porch,deckorbalcony-12

inchesminimum.

(b) Clearanceto a window or doorthatmaybeopened-9inches

minimum.

Forinstallationsrequiringa

verticalriseontheexterior

ofthebuilding,14-inchand36-inchtallSnorkelTerminations,asshowninFigure

7 are available. Follow the same installation procedures as used for standard

SquareHorizontalTerminations. IftheSnorkelTerminationmustbeinstalled

belowgrade,(i.e.basementapplication),properdrainagemustbeprovidedto

preventwaterfromenteringtheSnorkelTermination. RefertoFigure8. Donot

attempttoenclosetheSnorkelwithinthewall,oranyothertypeofenclosure.

Step 4. For a Square Horizontal Vent

Termination,placetheventcap inthecenterof

thesquareholeand attachtotheexteriorwall

withthefourwoodscrewsprovided. Before

attachingtheVentTerminationtotheexterior

wall,runabeadofnon-hardeningsealantaround

it'soutsideedges,soastomakeasealbetween

it and the wall. If you are using a Round

HorizontalVentTermination,placeanexterior

WallFirestopoverthesquarehole. Runabead

ofnon-hardeningsealantaroundtheedgesof

theWallFirestop,andattachtheWallFirestop

tothewallwiththefourwoodscrewsprovided.

Thearrowontheventcapshouldbepointing

up. Insurethatproperclearancestocombustible

materialsaremaintained. (Fig9)

VentTerminationdoesnotneedanexterior

WallFirestopwhenusingaVinylSidingStand-

off.Simplyslidetheroundtermination through

theVinylSidingStandoffinordertoconnect

totheventpiping. Besurethatallofthevent

capmeshistotheexteriorofthewall.

Step5. Beforeconnectingthehorizontal

runofventpipetotheventtermination,slidetheWallFirestopovertheventpipe

ontheinteriorsideofthewall.

Step6. Slidetheapplianceandventassemblytowardsthewall,carefully

insertingtheventpipeintotheventcapassembly. Itisimportantthattheventpipe

extendintotheventcapsufficientdistancesoastoresultinaminimumpipeoverlap

of 1-1/4inches. Securetheconnectionbetweentheventpipeandtheventcap.

Forsquarecaps,attachthe twosheetmetalstrips extendingfromtheventcap

assemblyinto the outerwall of thevent pipe. Use thetwo sheet metal screws

providedtoconnectthesheetmetalstripstothepipesection. Forroundcaps,use

threesheetmetalscrewsandattachcaptopipesection. (Fig11)

Step7. Slide the Wall Firestop up to the wall surface and attach with

screwsprovided. (Fig12)
