PLANNINGYOURINSTALLATION
TherearetwobasictypesofDirectVentSysteminstallations. Checktheappliance
manufacturer'sinstallationinstructionstoconfirmwhattypesarepermitted,andalso
checkforanyventingrestrictionssuchasmaximumhorizontalrun,andmaximum
verticalrise. Thetwotypesofinstallationsare:
•Horizontal Termination(Fig1andFig2)
•Vertical Termination(Fig3)
Whenplanningyourinstallation,itwillbenecessarytoselecttheproperlengthof
ventpipeforyourparticularrequirements. Forhorizontalinstallations,checkthe
appliancemanufacturers'sinstallationsinstructionstodeterminetheminimum
clearancefromtherearoftheappliancetothewall. Itisalsoimportanttonotethe
wallthickness. Selecttheamountofverticalrisedesiredfor"vertical-to-horizontal"
type installations. To determine the length of vent pipe required for vertical
installations,measurethedistancefromtheapplianceflueoutlettotheceiling,the
ceilingthickness,theverticalriseinanatticorsecondstory, andallowforsufficient
ventheightabovetheroofline. Fortwo-storyapplications,firestopsarerequired
ateachfloorlevel. Ifanoffsetisneededintheattic,additionalpipeandelbowswill
berequired.
HORIZONTALINSTALLATION
Step1. Setthefireplaceinit'sdesiredlocation. Checktodetermineifwall
studsorroofraftersareinthewaywhentheventingsystemisattached. Ifthisis
thecase,youmaywanttoadjustthelocationoftheappliance.
Step2. DirectVentpipeandfittingsaredesignedwithspecialtwist-lock
connections. Toconnecttheventingsystemtotheapplianceflueoutlet,atwist-lock
applianceadaptorisrequired. Withsomebrandsofappliances,theSimpsonDura-
Ventadaptorwillbebuiltintotheapplianceatthefactory. Withotherbrands, it
willbesuppliedbythe appliancemanufacturer,forinstallationinthefield. Assemble
thedesiredcombinationofpipeandelbowstotheapplianceadaptorwithpipe
seamsorientedtowardsthewallorfloor,asmuchoutofviewaspossible. Ifthe
applianceadaptorisnotbuiltintotheapplianceatthefactory,itmaybepreferable
toassemblethepipeandelbowstotheadaptorpriortomountingtheadaptoronto
thefireplace. Inthismanner,thepipeand45°elbowassemblymaybeproperly
