The Offshore Dynamics 5801 Bennett Trim Tab Adaptor is designed to measure the inductive
sensors in Bennett Trim Tabs and relay their position over multiple interfaces.
The Trim Tab Adaptor is water resistant to IP65. It is designed to be mounted case up in a
protected location. It is essential that it is installed and set up correctly according to this
manual. Please read and follow the installation and setup instructions carefully to achieve the
best results.
1.1 FIRMWARE REVISION
The information in this manual corresponds to rmware revision 1.1.4
1.2 PRODUCT FEATURES
The Offshore Dynamics 5801 Bennett Trim Tab Adaptor has the following features:
•Convert up to three inductive sensors inside
Bennett Trim Tabs to a percentage position
message for display.
•Switch settable CAN bus output to either
NMEA2000® or a xed source address.
•RS485 RTU Modbus output suitable for use
by a PLC based system.
•Green/Red LEDs conrming receipt and
transmission of valid or invalid RS485 modbus
messages.
•One button calibration.
•Connection by waterproof Deutsch Connector

2.4 UNIT SWITCH SETTINGS
During initial installation, the unit needs to be opened and switches set to match the units
interface connection.
If the unit is to be used with a xed source address style CAN bus interface, then the xed
address mode switch needs to be set to the ON position and the xed source address set in
the Hi and Lo order rotary switches. If the unit is to be used as an NMEA2000® sensor then the
Device Instance should be set in the two small rotary switches. These would normally both be
set to “0”
Modbus
It is possible to select Modbus baud rate and parity using SW1 ; please refer to the table 1
below. Note: Modbus is only available in NMEA2000®mode.
The 5801 MODBUS frame consists of 8 data bits, 1 parity bit, and 1 stop bit. Please refer to
Modbus specication for further information.
Modbus Commands
The 5801 Trim Tab Adaptor identies as slave 48 (0x30) and supports one command (0x3) [Read
Holding Registers].
Any request for registers not implemented will result in error code (0x2) [Illegal Address] to be
returned.
Any request for a command that is not implemented will result in error code (0x1) [Illegal
Instruction] to be returned.
Please refer to table 2 for memory locations.
Recommended Usage
We recommend that the device is polled at a maximum of once per second. Ideally this request
should handle all 3 registers; however, the ability to poll individual registers is implemented as
per MODBUS specication.

6 of 13
Please note that during the calibration procedure the unit will not attempt to transmit any
positional messages.
The unit is calibrated as follows:
•Power up the device.
•Press the calibrate button so that the white calibration LED illuminates.
•Actuate each sender between it’s highest and lowest positions so the 5801
can learn where these limits are.
•Press the calibrate button again so the calibrate LED turns off.
•The unit will now transmit standard messages including the position
of each sensor between its limits.

MAINTENANCE
●Clean the unit with a soft cloth.
●Do not use chemical cleaners as they may remove paint or markings or may
corrode the enclosure or seals.
●Ensure that the unit is secure using the mounting holes on the device and
cannot be moved relative to the mounting surface.
●Check the security of the cables connected to the NMEA2000® connector,
tighten if necessary.
