PARTS LIST

PRE-ASSEMBLY

1.Locatepart#6wingjoiners.Jointhethree wingjoiners together

usingalightcoatofepoxy. Theyshouldforma"V"shapeasshown

above.

4. Locatethe#4 verticalstabilizerand#5 horizontal stabilizer. The

rudderistemporarilyattachedtotheverticalstabilizer.Theelevator

istemporarilyattachedtothehorizontalstabilizer.Remove the

rudder,elevator,andthepreinstalledmetal hinges.

2.Assembletheaileronsupporttraywithparts#21 aileronservotray

and#4210mmx37mmbalsaaileronservotrayblocks.Epoxythe

balsablockstotheplywoodtrayas shownabove.

5.Applyasmallamountofvaselinealongthehingepointonbothsides

ofthehinge.Thiswillpreventepoxyfromgetting inthehingejoint

andruiningthehinge.Donotgetvaselineontherestofthehinge.

Ifthishappenstheepoxywillnotholdthehingeandtheaileronmay

separatefrom thewingcausingacrash.Dothisstepto alleleven

hinges.

3.Theaileronsaremountedtemporarilyfrom thefactory. Removethe

aileronsfromthewings.Nowremovethethreemetalhingesoneach

wing.

6.Applyepoxytobothsidesononeendofthehingeasshown. Slide

thehingebackintotheslotinthewingstrailingedge.Wipeoffany

excess epoxy beforeitcures. Thehingepinmustbeagainst the

trailingedgeofthewingtoallowthe ailerons, installed later, to fit

correctly.Installsixhinges,threeineachwing,andsetthewings

asideuntiltheepoxycures.

7.Usingthesameprocedureforepoxyingthehingesthatwasusedin

Step6,epoxythethreehingesintothehorizontalstabilizer.Epoxy

twohingesintotheverticalstabilizer.

10.Removetheaileronandapplyepoxytothehingesandthepartofthe

torquerodthatisinsertedintotheaileron.Alsoforceasmallamount

ofepoxyintothetorquerodholethatisintheaileron.Carefullyinstall

theaileronontothehingesandtorquerod.Installtheailerons

ontobothwingscarefully.Makesurethat noepoxy gets intothe

torquerodhinge.Alsobesurethatthere are nogaps.

8.Aftertheepoxyholdingthehingeshascured,locatetheaileronsthat

wereremoved fromthewinginStep3.Test fit theailerononthe

wing.Besurethetorquerodfitsintheholeintheedgeoftheaileron.

Thetorquerodiswhatwilltransmitmotionfrom theservoto

theaileron.

11.Installtherudderon theverticalstabilizerandelevator on the

horizontalstabilizerusingthesameprocedureusedfortheaileron.

Becarefulnottoleaveagapatthehinge.

9.Withailerontemporarilyinstalled,thereshouldbenogap.Ifthe

planeisflownwithahingegapofmorethan1/16",flutter(arapid

vibration)maybecreated.Thisflutter maycausetheaileronsto

comelooseorinseverecases,breakthewing.

12.Coatthefueltankcompartmentwithaneven thincoatofepoxy.

Coverallexposedbalsaandplywoodparts.Becareful notto fillany

holes.Also atthistimecoatthebottomof the#8 fuel tank

compartmentcover. This willpreventthefuel from destroying the

-5 - wood.

WING JOINER INSTALLATION

1.UsingthewingjoinerassembledinStep1 ofpre-assembly,insert

thewingjoinerintothewingpaneltemporarily.Alsoinstallthewing

#43 alignmentpegas shown.Donotglueat thistime.

CAUTION:

Makesurethatthegluejointsatthewingrootarefastened

securiy.Checktheribsandthesheeting.Ifthis isatallloose,apply

epoxy betweentheribsheetingandspars.

4.Whenyouaresatisfiedwith thefitof thewingjoiner, remove the

wingsfromthejoiner. Mixabatchof30minuteepoxyandusingthe

rightwingpanel(hasHobbistarontop)smeartheinsideoftheright

wingjoiner pocketwith a heavy coat of epoxy. Also coat halfof the

wingjoinerwith

epoxy

andpush

into

thewingjoinerpocket.

Coat

half

ofthewingalignmentpegwithepoxyandinsertitintotheholeatthe

rearofthewingroot. Cleantheepoxyfromthewingroottoprevent

epoxybuildup.Allowtheepoxy tocure.

2.Slidetheotherwingpanelontothewingjoiner.Slidethetwo wing

halvestogether.Checkfor properalignment.Thereshouldbeno

gapbetweenthewinghalves.Ifthereis,trimtheendof thewing

joinerslightlytoallowproperfit.Donotglueat thistime.

5.Markthelocationonthebottomofthewingwhere thewingjoineris

installed.

3.Thewingshouldform a"V" whenassembledasshown.Thetopof

thewinghasletteringonit.Whenonesideisplacedflatonyour

work surface,theotherwingtipshouldbeangledupsothereis

approximately2"ofclearancebetweenthesurfaceandthetip.

6.Whenthe

epoxy

has

cured

you

may

proceed

join

both

wing

panels

together. Mix a batchof epoxy andheavily coat thewing joiner

pocket

the

leftwing.

Also

applyan

even

coat

epoxy

bothwing

roots.Besuretocoverthewholewingroot.Whensatisfiedwiththe

gluing,slidethewingpanelstogetherandcheckforfit. Wipeexcess

gluefromthejoint.IsopropyIalcoholworkswellforthis.Itisbestto

usemaskingtapetoholdthewinghalvestogetheruntil theepoxy

cures.

Note:Youmayproceedwithfuselagepreparationandcomebacktohere

afterthewingisready.

7.Aftertheepoxyhasfullycured(overnight)removethemaskingtape

andapplythebluecentertape.Beginatthebottomtrailingedge,

wrapforwardandaroundtotoptrailingedgeoverlappingthebegin-

ningpoint.

3.Remove theservotrayand,followingthepicture,removethe

coveringfromarea"A".

woodtoaccommodatetheservopreviouslymeasuredinStep1

1.Locatethepre-assembled#21 aileronservotraywith#42 balsa

blocksandaservofromyourradiosystem. Sliptheservointothe

trayandmeasurethedistancefromthebottomoftheservotothe

bottomofthebalsablock.Notethedistancefor useinStep4.

2.Remove theservofrom theservotray. Turntheservotray upside

down(balsablocksup)andlaytheendofthetrayonthelinedrawn

inStep5 ofthewingjoinerinstallation.Usinga felt tippentrace

aroundtheoutsideandinsideoftheservotray.

5.Settheservointheservotray andtest fit theservotrayto

themountingarea.Whensatisfiedwiththefit,removetheservoand

epoxytheservotraytothemountingarea.

FUSELAGEPREPARATION

1.Onthesideattherearofthefuselageuseyourfingertolocatethe

stabilizercutouts.Theywillbesoftspotsunderthecoveringonboth

sides.Usingasharpkniferemovethecoveringmaterialfromthesoft

spotsonbothsides.Duringtheprocessyouwillfindabalsatailpost.

Thismustalsoberemovedtoallowtheinstallationofthehorizontal

stabilizer.

2.Againusingyourfingerlocatetheverticalstabilizerslotontopofthe

fuselage,andremovethecoveringfromthisarea.

3.Thefactoryhasprecuttherudderandelevatorcontrolrodexitholes.

Theseareapproximately1/8inchby1 inchlong.Thelocation

oftherudderexitholeisapproximately61/2inchesforwardfromthe

tailpostandontopof thefuselageandslightiytotherightwhen

viewingtheplanefrom thetail.Theareaappearsslightlydarker.

Removethecoveringfrom thisareaatthistime.-8-

Theelevatorexit holeislocatedon theleft sideof thefuselage,

61/2"forwardofthetailpostandapproximately 1 inchabove the

bottomofthefuselage.Youmaybeabletodetectthisasasoftspot

inthefuselage.Removethecoveringfrom theelevatorexithole.

5.Thewingdowelholesarealsopre-drilled.Theyarelocatedinthe

areaindicatedinthephoto.Usingasharpkniferemovethecovering

materialatthistime.Therearefourholes,twooneachsideofthe

fuselage.Insertthedowelssothattheyprotrudeequaldistanceon

eachsideofthefuselage.Epoxypartofthedowelprotrudingfrom

thesidesofthefuselage.Thiswillkeepfuel

from

ruining

the

dowels.

6.Themainlandinggearslotislocatedonthebottomofthefuselage,

approximately171/2 inchesbackfrom thenose (or front)of the

plane.Usingasharpkniferemovethecoveringfromthisarea.

STABILIZER PREPARATION

1.Locatethehorizontalstabilizer.Slidethestabilizerintotheslot

preparedintheprevioussection.Positionthestabilizersothatitis

centeredinthefuselageandthatthetrailingedgeoftheelevatoris

90'tothecenterlineofthefuselage.Inserta pinthroughapieceof

stringandattachthepintothefuselageonthecenterlineasshown.

Stretchthestringtothecomeroftheelevator.Thedistancefromthe

pintothecomermustbeequalonbothsides.Thismethodwilladjust

thestabilizersoitis90'tothecenterlineof thefuselage.

2.Markonthestabilizerwhere thefuselageandthestabilizertouch.

Dothisonthetopandthebottomof thestabilizer.Remove the

coveringinbetweenthe

two

lines.Thiswillallowa

secureglue

jointwhenthestabilizerisepoxyedlater.Donotcutthebalsawood

underthecovering.

3.Locatetheverticalstabilizer.Removethecoveringfrom thelower

verticalstabilizerbase.

INSTALLATIONOF

HORIZONTALSTABILIZER

IMPORTANT:Thisnextseriesof stepswilldeterminehowwellyour

Hobbistar60willfly. Sopleasereadandrereadthesestepssothatyou

aretotallyfamiliarwithitssequence.

1.Usingwingsaddletape,applya striptobothsidesof thewing

saddleareaas shown.

2.Usingfourrubberbands(#64) temporarily secure thewingtothe

fuselage.Thisbecomesyourbasicreferencepoint.

3.Laythefuselagewithwingattachedonanyflatsurface.Mixabatch

of30minuteepoxy. You willhaveplentyoftimeto work sodon't

hurry.Usingascrappieceofplywoodleftoverfromtheaileronservo

tray,applyagenerousamountofepoxytotheinsidearea;topand

bottom,andalongthesidesofthestabilizerslotasshown.

4. Usingthesamescrapofplywood,applyanevencoatofepoxytothe

topandbottomof thehorizontalstabilizerintheareawhereyou

removedthecovering.

INSTALLATION OF VERTICAL STABILIZER

Nowifwehavedoneagoodjobwiththewing-stabilizerrelationship,the

installationoftheruddershouldbeeasy. Theverticalstablilizeris90'to

thewing.Adraftingtrianglewouldbehelpfulhere.

5.Slidethestabilizerintotheslotfromtherear.Thisfitshouldbeclose

butnottight.Usinga ruler(12") checktoseeifyou haveequal

distancefrom thecenterofthetailtotheoutsideedgeof thestab.

Nowusingthestringexplainedinthestabilizerpreparationsection,

adjust thestabilizersoitis90'to thecenterlineofthefuselage.

1.Lookingintothefuselageverticalstabilizerslot,applysomeepoxy

tothetopsurfaceofthehorizontalstabilizerthatisvisibleinsidethe

fuselage.

2.Mixasmallbatchof epoxy andapplyittothearea insideofthe

fuselageonthesurface oftheexposedwood. Apply an even coat

totheverticalstabilizerbasewhereyouremovedthecovering. Inset

theverticalstabilizerintotheslotandpushdownuntilthestabilizer

stops.

6.Nowviewthestabilizer-wingrelationshipfrom behindwiththeplane

restingonalevelsurface(seephotoabove).Distance

"x"

shouldbe

thesame.Ifnot,shimthestabilizerusinga smallsliverofwoodto

get theproperrelationship.Lettheepoxy curethoroughly.

3.Usingthetriangle,checkto seeiftherudderis90*tothehorizontal

stabilizer.Ifso,a coupleof straight pinswillholdtherudder in

positionuntiltheepoxycures.
