This mat must be installed per HeatTrak® instructions. Follow these important warnings to avoid

the risk of re or shock.

• Haveaqualiedelectricianinstallaproperlygroundedoutlet,ratedforthevoltageandcurrent

required,andacceptableforoutdooruse(protectedfromsnowandrain),immediatelyadjacentto

thelocationwheretheheaterwillbeused.

• Donotwalkonthematbeforeitiscompletelyinstalled.

• Inspecttheentirematandsupplycordfordefectsordamagebeforeusing.

NOTE: Thepowersupplycordisnotreplaceable.

• Donotmodifyanypartofthemat.Inparticular,donotattempttocut,slice,ortrimthemat.

• Routethesupplycordandlocatetheheatertobeprotectedfromdamage.

UNPACKING THE BOX & PREPARING THE AREA

Afterreviewingthesafetywarningsabove,taketheHeatTrakMattothespotwhereitisgoingtobeused

andunpackitthere.Savethepackagingmaterialsforstoringthemato-season.Savetheseinstructions

incaseyouneedtolookatthemagain.

It is best to clear all pre-existing ice and snow from the area you will be using

the HeatTrak Mat. But if this is too dicult, you can use the HeatTrak Mat to

melt it. Simply roll out the mat over the snow and/or ice and plug it in.

Dependingonhowmuchsnoworpackediceyoualreadyhave,itcouldtakeuptoawholedaytomeltit.

(Undernormalconditions(i.e.whenthematisalreadydownandsetup),thematwillmeltthesnowas

itfalls,leavingyouwithaninstantlyclearedwalkway).Afterclearingthepre-existingsnowandice,make

surethebottomsurfaceisfreeofanysharpobjectssuchasrocks,glassorloosenails,whichcouldcause

damagetothebottomofthemat.

INSTALLING THE HEATTRAK WALKWAY MAT

• Donotinstallthematonaroughdirtorgravelsurface.TheHeatTrakMatshouldbeinstalledonat

orinclinedsurfacesonly.Alignthematsothepowercordisclosetotheelectricaloutlet.

• Ifinstallingmorethanonemat,DONOTOVERLAPMORETHAN1INCHOFANYPARTOFTHEMATS.

(Overlappingmorethan1inchmaycauseoverheatingandcouldcausethematstomelt).

• Thetopandbottomsurfacesofthematareexactlythesameandwillheatthesame.Sofeelfreeto

ipthemataroundorupsidedowninordertogetthepowercordclosetotheelectricaloutlet.

• Rollthematoutandadjustittotexactlyasyouwantit.

• TheHeatTrakWalkwaymatshouldnotbeusedonstairs.Forsnowandiceremovalonstairs,usethe

HeatTrakStairMats.Formoreinformationonthestairmats,visitourwebsiteatwww.HeatTrak.com.

• Useonlythe3/8”innerdiametergrommetsforattachment.Donotdriveanyformofnails,screws,

fasteners,orotherobjectsthroughtherubbersurfaceofthemat.

• Thematcanbeinstalledatairtemperaturesdownto–20°F.

NOTE:Atcoldtemperatures,thematislessexibleandmaynotlayperfectlyat.

Laythematoutasataspossibleandturniton.Asitheatsup,thematwillatten.

Forbestperformance,makesuretoturnthematsonatleast30minutesbefore

thesnowstartstofall.Thiswaythematswillbeniceandwarmandreadytostart

meltingassoonastherstakesfall.However,ifyouturnthematsonafterthe

snowhasfallen,itcouldtakeuptoafewhoursforthemattomeltthroughallthe

accumulatedsnow.

INSTALLING THE HEATTRAK STAIR MATS

DONOTCONNECTTHEPOWERUNITTOTHEOUTLETUNTILALLTHEMATSAREPROPERLYCONNECTED

TOEACHOTHERANDNOTSTACKEDONTOPOFEACHOTHER.

First,laytheHeatTrakStairMatsonconsecutivesteps,orientingthematssothecableconnectorsareon

thesideclosesttotheoutlet.Justlikethewalkwaymats,thetopandbottomsurfacesofthestairmats

areexactlythesameandwillheatthesame.So,feelfreetoipthematsaroundorupsidedowninorder

togetthecableconnectorsonthesideyouwantthem.

Next,connectmultiplematstogetherbyconnectingthemaleconnectorofmat“A”tothefemale

connectorofmat“B”.Todothis,alignthemaleandfemaleconnectorsandrmlypushthecables

togethersotheyareushwitheachother.Ifthemaleandfemaleendsfeelliketheydonotconnect

together,ipthefemaleendofthecordoverandtheplugsshouldgotogether.

EveryseriesofstairmatsrequiresaPowerUnittobringelectricitytothemats(PartNo.HR-PAfor120V

orHR-PBfor240V).Removethelighttester(transparentcork)fromtheendofthePowerUnitandinsert

intothefemaleconnectorofyourlaststairmattosealtheconnectorfrommoisture.Afterallthemats

areconnectedproperly,andthelighttesterissecurelyinsertedintothelaststairmat,connectthePower

Unittotherstmatusingthesamemethodusedforconnectingtheconnectorcables.Besureallcables

areasfartothesideofthestepsaspossiblesotheydonotpresentatrippinghazard.

PlugthePowerUnitintoaproperlygroundedoutlet.You’llseethematsareonwhenboththePower

Unitandthelighttesterareilluminated.IfthePowerUnitdoesnotilluminate,refertothesectionbelow

abouttestingthePowerUnit.Ifthelighttesterdoesnotilluminate,checkalltheconnectionsofthestair

matstomakesuretheconnectorsareushwitheachother.

SECURING THE MAT

Thematwasdesignedwithaseriesof3/8”innerdiametergrommetsalongeachedgetomakesecuring

thematbothsimpleandeective.Securingthematminimizestrippingandkeepsitfrommoving.To

securethematyoumustusethesegrommets.Useascrewthatissuitableforthegrommetopeningand

surfaceunderthemat(i.e.cementscrewsforcement,woodscrewsforwood,etc.)

INSTALLING ELECTRICAL OUTLETS

Makesuretheelectricaloutletsyouareusingareproperlygroundedandsuitablefortheloadtheywillbe

handling.Fortheelectricalratingsofeachofourmats,pleaseseethechartattheendofthisbooklet.

TESTING THE POWER UNIT

Forgeneralsafety,theHeatTrakMatissuppliedwithaPowerUnit.ThePowerUnitturnsothepowerif

anyoftheelectriccurrentbeginsleakingtoground.ItisimportanttotestthePowerUniteachtimethe

matisinstalledandbeforeuse.Hereisallyouneedtodo:

1. LocatethetestandresetbuttonsonthePowerUnit.

2. Plugthepowercordintotheoutlet.

3. AlternatelypresstheRESETandTESTbuttons.

4. EachtimeyoupresstheRESETbutton,thepowerlightshouldturnon.

Ifthelightdoesnotcomeon,makesurethereisvoltageattheoutlet.

5. EachtimeyoupresstheTESTbutton,thepowerlightshouldturno.

6. LeavethePowerUnitwiththelightturnedon.IfthePowerUnitdoes

notoperateasdescribedabove,donotusethemat.

DRIVING ON THE MATS

TheHeatTrakMatsareverydurableandwillhandlenormalvehiculartracinstandardwintery

environments.However,itisimportanttomakesurethegroundsurfacesunderthematsareclearof

anysharpobjectsthatcouldpuncturethemat.Ifyouhavequestionsaboutthedurabilityofourmatsin

yourspecicvehicularsituation(i.e.,manylargetrucksonaregularbasis),pleasecallHeatTraktechnical

supportteamat(888)586-4904.

OPERATION & STORAGE

PowertheHeatTrakMatwheneverthereisathreatofsnoworice.Itisagoodideatounplugitwhen

thereisnosnoworice.Beforestoringthemat,cleanitwithmildsoapandwater,andplaceitinthe

originalpackaging.RollthematbackupandplacethepowercordandPowerUnitinsidetherolledmat

toprotectthemfromdamage.Store mat indoors after winter season.Itisimportanttostorethe

matsimmediatelyafterthewinterends.FailingtodosomayexposethematstoexcessivesummerUV

sunlight,harmingthematsovertime.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why don’t the mats feel warm when I touch them? Whenyouturnonthemats,theymaynotfeel

warmtothetouch,butthat’sok.Thisisespeciallytruewhentheairtemperatureoutsideisverycold.

Thisisbecausethetemperatureofyourhandisgreaterthanthetemperatureofthemat.Butifyouare

concerned,checktoseethatthelightonthemat’splugisilluminated.Ifitis,thesematsareonandthey’ll

meltsnow.Ifaftertherstsnowfallitappearsthematsarenotmeltingsnow,callourtroubleshooting

teamat(888)586-4904.

Are the power units waterproof? Thepowerunitonthematiscertiedas“rainproof,”butitisnot

submersible.Therefore,pleasebecarefulnottolaythemat’spowerunitinanareathatwillcollectalot

ofwater,suchasasmallditch.Whilethematsthemselvesareverywaterproof,thepowerunit,however,

cannotbeexposedtoexcessiveamountsofwater.Itisbesttomakesurethepowerunithangsfrom

theoutletinaverticalmanneratleast18”fromtheground.However,ifthepowerunitwillbelayingin

ahorizontalmanneronasidewalkorground,itisbesttowrapthepowerunitinaplasticbagtokeep

asmuchwaterawayaspossible.Donotmaketheplasticbagairtight,becauseitisimportanttomake

sureanywaterthatmaygetinsidethebaghasawaytoexit.Thepurposeofthebagistokeepexcessive

amountsofwaterawayfromthepowerunit.

Can I leave the mats on all the time? Yes,youcanrunthesematsallwinterlongwithoutdamaging

themat,butyourelectricitybillwillbehigherthannormal.Itisbesttoonlyusethematswhenyouare

expectingsnow.Alternatively,youcanuseanyofourthermostataccessoriestoautomatetheoperation

ofthemats.Thiswillsaveyoutimeandmoneyandensurethatthematsturnonevenifnobodyisthere

Can I place the mat on any surface? Somesurfaces(e.g.,stampedconcrete)havespecialcoatingsor

sealersthatmaygetharmedifexposedtoheat.Ifyouhaveasurfacethatyouthinkmayhaveaspecial

coatingonit,youshouldputathinheatblockerunderthemats.Thisblockercanbeintheformof

plywood,outdoorcarpetorturf,thininsulation,etc.Puttingaheatblockerunderneaththematswill

forcetheheatupwardsawayfromthesidewalk,preservingthespecialcoatingonthesidewalk.
