Congratulations

Congratulations on your purchare

the

Definitive Technology

8B Bipolar

Loudspeaker System. This revolutionary

loudspeaker utilizes state-of-the-art

components (cast basket homopolymer-

coned bass/midrange drivers, moving coil

ferrotluid-cooled pure aluminum dome

high frequency radiators, uniphase

crossover networks, etc.), anon-resonant

monocoque cabinet and unique bipolar

(front and rear) radiation in order to

achieve the most lifelike sound possible

in your listening room for many years

to come.

Please Inspect For Shipping Damage

Each loudspeaker leaves our plant in perfect condition. Any

visible or concealed damage most likely occurred

handling

after it left our plant and should be reported at once to your

Definitive dealer or the shipping company which delivered

your loudspeaker.

Connecting

Your

Loudspeakers

critical for properperformance that both speakers (left and right) be connect-

ed in properphase. Note that one terminal on each speaker (the

colored red and

the other(the

colored black. Please make certain that you connect the red

(+)

terminal on each speakerto the red (+) terminal of its channel on your amplifier

receiver, andthe black

terminal to the black

terminal.

essential that both

speakersbe connected in the same way to the amplifier (in phase).

agreallack ofbass, it

likely that one speaker

Usually

distortion is

heard

when

levels,

is caused

driving

(turning

up) the amplifier too loud

and

not

driving the

speakers

with

power

than

they

can

handle. Remember,

"Spiking"

Your

Loudspeakers

An optional "spiking"kit has been provided should you desire to "spike" your

loudspeakers."Spiking" your loudspeakers will provide greater stability when plac-

ing your loudspe*.ers oncarpeting and

will

also, according to many experts, result

in an overall improvement in sonic performance. Care should

taken when using

spikes as they may cause damage to wooden

other Doors which are susceptible to

being scratched. Definitive Technology

specifically not

responsibl~

fordamage

which may result from the use ofspikes.

The spike kit contains 4spikes.

install, unscrew the plastic guides on the bot-

toms ofthe speakers. Then screw the 4spikes into the Tnuts. Then (preferably with

the help ofanotherperson) lift the speakerupright and lower it down to its exact

desired position on the

Door.

You

must lower the speaker to the exact position you

want because once the spikes are in place

you

cannot move the speakers sideways

on the rug orfloor -this may damage theDoor

thespeakers. Next, adjustthe

spikes

the speaker sits solidly (and does not rock).

Please note

that

you

can

adjust

the

feet

spikes to tilt

the

speakers

back

(front

back

approximately1/2"

higher

than

rear)

for even

better

sound.

Speaker Break-In

Your BP 8Bs should sound good rightout of the box; however,

extended

break-in period of20-40 hours

more offairly loud playing

required to reach

full performance capability. Break-in allows the suspensions to work in and results

in fuller bass, amore open "blossoming" midrange and smoother high frequency

reproduction.

Positioning

the

8s in

Your

Room

important, because

the BP 8B's unique bipolar (front and rear)radiation

pattern, that some simple set-up recommendations be

foil

owed in

order

to assure

optimum performance in your room. Please rememberthatalthough these recom-

mendations areusually valid, all rooms and listening set-ups

are

somewhat unique,

so do not be afraid to experiment with the speakers. Remember, whatever sounds

best to you

correct.

In most rooms the speakers should be placed 6to

inches from the rear wall in

ocder

allow the rearradiated sound

freely reflect off the back wall. Placement

closer to the rear wall

will

increase the bass output while placement further from the

rear wall

will

decrease the bass output.

The speakers should usually be placed 6

8feet

apart

and kept away from the

side walls and corners. Agood rule of thumb

to place the speakers separated by

one halfthe length of the wall they are positioned along, and each speaker one quar-

terthe length of the back wall away from the side wall.

Speakers may be angled in towards the listening position

left parallel with the

rear wall. Generally,

recommend angling the speakers in which will result in a

somewhat brighter, clearer, more detailed sound with amore focused central image.

Leay ing the speakers parallel with the wall

will

result in aless bright, more diffuse

sound. Try

leave the space on the sides of the speakers as open and as unobstruct-

ed as possible

that there

will

be no interference with the

rear

radiated sound.

The BP

can also be used as an exceptional rear

side surround effects speaker

in home theaterinstallations. When used as aside speaker, locate the BP

behind

and to the sides of the listeners. When used as arear speaker, the BP

8Bs

can be

located 6-12" from the rear wall and pointed towards the listeners,

placed sideways

on the rear wall with the drivers facing

each other and towards the side walls.
