toring systems. This manual contains important information about the

PRODIGY

system you now own. Please read it thoroughly and care-

fully. A warranty registration card is included with your system.

Please complete it and mail it to us.

PRODIGY

meters are designed to help you and your health care

professionals monitor your blood glucose levels. This manual is

designed to help you use the

PRODIGY

system, and technical

support is available twenty four (24) hours a day and seven (7) days a

week by calling 1-800-243-2636. All questions about interpreting the

results should be directed to your healthcare professionals.

Caution: Before using any product to test your blood glucose,

read all instructions thoroughly and practice the test. Do all

quality control checks as directed and consult with a diabetes

healthcare professional.

This manual is written for four (4) models of the PRODIGY meter:

PRODIGY Advance, PRODIGY Audio, and PRODIGY

Autocode talking meter and non-talking meter.

All four (4) PRODIGY models have the latest technology for blood

glucose monitoring, are easy to use, and will give fast and accurate

results with a minimal sample of blood. All four (4) PRODIGY

meters have a large screen display for easy reading, and are small and

lightweight for portable convenience. All the PRODIGY meters allow

Alternative Site Testing (AST), as well as have memory and data man-

agement capabilities, with free software available at

www.prodigymeter.com, to give you and your healthcare professionals

powerful graphic tools to manage your diabetes.

PRODIGY Audio and PRODIGY Autocode Talking also include

a speaking (talking) function, which is an acoustic aid for using the

meter and hearing test results. The PRODIGY Autocode meters

(talking and non-talking) are no-coding meters, allowing you to save

time and avoid human error due to improper coding.

The following basic safety precautions should always be taken.

1. Close supervision is necessary when the device is used by, on,

or near children, handicapped persons or invalids.

2. Use the device only for the intended use described in this manual.

3. Do not use strips and control solutions which are not supplied by

the manufacturer.

4. Do not use the device if it is not working properly, or if it has

suffered any damage.

5. Before using any product to test your blood glucose, read all

instructions thoroughly and practice the test. Do all quality control

checks as directed and consult with a diabetes healthcare

professional.

Important Information

Severe dehydration and excessive water loss may cause false low

results. If you believe you are suffering from severe dehydration,

consult a healthcare professional immediately.

Elevated blood triglycerides, reducing substances such as uric acid and

ascorbic acid at normal blood concentration, or acetaminophen, dopa,

methyldopa, L-dopa, and tolbutamide at normal blood concentrations

should not significantly affect the test results.

If you are experiencing symptoms that are not consistent with your blood

glucose test results and you have followed all instructions described in

this owner’s manual, call your healthcare professional.

Test results below 60 mg/dL (3.3 mmol/L) indicate low blood glucose

(hypoglycemia). Test results greater than 240 mg/dL (13.3 mmol/L)

indicate high blood glucose (hyperglycemia). If you get results below

60 mg/dL or above 240 mg/dL, repeat the test, and if the results are

still below 60 mg/dL (3.3 mmol/L) or above 240 mg/dL (13.3 mmol/L),

consult your healthcare professional immediately.

Inaccurate results may occur in severely hypotensive individuals or

patients in shock. Inaccurate low results may occur for individuals expe-

riencing a hyperglycemic-hyperosmolar state, with or without ketosis.

Critically ill patients should not be tested with blood glucose meters.

Please refer to your test strip package insert for additional important

information.

About Alternative Site Testing (AST)

Important: There are important limitations to AST. Please consult your

healthcare professionals before you do AST.

What is A T?

Alternative Site Testing (AST) means you can use parts of the body

other than your fingertips to check your blood glucose levels. The

PRODIGY blood glucose meters allow you to test on your palm, fore-

arm, upper arm, calf, or thigh.

What is the advantage?

ingertips feel pain more readily because

they are full of nerve endings (receptors). At

other body sites, nerve endings are not so

numerous, and you will not feel as much

pain as you will experience at the fingertip.

When to use AST?

ood, medication, illness, stress, and exer-

cise all can affect blood glucose

levels. Capillary blood at the fingertip

reflects these changes faster than

capillary blood at other sites. Therefore,

if you are testing your blood glucose level

during or immediately after a meal, physical

exercise, or stressful event, take the bloo

sample from your fingertip only.

Use AST only:

•Two hours or more after your last meal.

•Two hours or more after taking insulin.

•Two hours or more after exercise.

Do OT use AST if:

•You have reason to believe you have

hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.

•Your routine glucose results are often fluc-

tuating.

•You are pregnant.

To increase the accuracy when using AST, rub the puncture

site before extracting blood.

Introduction of the System

• Intended Use

The system is intended for use outside the body (in vitro diagnostic use

only). It should be used only for testing glucose (sugar) and only with fresh

capillary whole blood samples (from the fingertip, the palm, the forearm, the

upper arm, the calf and the thigh). The system is intended for use in the

home and in clinical settings. It should not be used for the diagnosis of dia-

betes or for the testing of newborns.

Alternative Site Testing (AST) in this system can be used only during steady-

state blood glucose conditions described in the “About AST” section.

• Principle of Measurement

The test is based on the measurement of electrical current generated by the

reaction of glucose with the reagent of the strip. The meter measures electric

current and displays the corresponding blood glucose level. The strength

of the electric current produced by the reaction depends on the amount

of glucose in the blood sample.

Contents of the System

This Manual is written for ALL four (4) PRODIGY systems:

PRODIGY Advance, PRODIGY Audio, PRODIGY

Autocode Talking and Non-Talking meters. Each model is available

either as a meter alone or as a kit. Each kit includes the supplies

needed to start testing your blood glucose, i.e., test strips, control

solution, lancets and lancing device. If you have a meter only, you

can purchase these supplies from your provider. Please check the

“RE ” number marked on the side panel of the box to see if you

have purchased a “Meter Kit” or a “Meter”. Please review the

contents of your purchace to confirm that all of the components are

included as listed below:

The PRODIGY meters, test strips, and control solutions have

been designed, tested, and proven to work together as a system to

produce accurate blood glucose test results. Use only PRODIGY

control solutions, and use only the proper PRODIGY test strips

for your PRODIGY meter model. PRODIGY Advance

and PRODIGY Audio models use PRODIGY test strips

RE . 52400 and RE . 52100. Both PRODIGY Autocode meters

use PRODIGY Autocode test strips RE . 52800 and RE . 52810.
