8282A Retriggerable One-Shot Logic Card
INTRODUCTION
The 8282A is an optional logic card for the 80 Series Control
Modules. The 8282A provides a nonretrig-gerable, one-shot
timer pulse, adjustable in three ranges.
By themselves, the control modules allow only a simple on-off
control action through either a triac output or NPN transistor.
Control actions take many forms; start up and shut down
sequences, counting, sorting, or jam detection are some of the
possibilities. The on-off state of the control module’s output
depends on the status of the infrared light beam established by
a sensor head. The light beam is either complete (LT) or
blocked(DRK).
The addition of a one-shot timer pulse to a control module’s
operation allows a control action to be carried on for a preset
period of time. A nonretriggerable one-shot pulse, once started
by a LT/DRK change, will run through its preset time period
regardless of any further LT/DRK changes.
INSTALLATION
1. Remove the sensor head if installed.
2. Remove the pin guide.
3. Set the appropriate switches for the timing range and
triggering mode desired (see Controls and Adjustments).
4. Orient the logic card so that the adjustment
potentiometer(s) face out.
5. Slide the logic card all the way into the control module and
replace or install the sensor head. Be sure that the sensor
head’s bayonet pins line up properly with the logic card’s
receptacles. The logic card is connected to the control
module’s circuit only when the sensor head is plugged in.
6. Adjustment within the timing range selected can now be
made via the potentiometer(s) on the logic card.
SPECIFICATIONS
Input Power:
Supplied only by the 80 Series Control Modules; do not
connect the one-shot card to external power.
Timing Range:
5 mS to 2.5 seconds in two ranges:
Range 1 ......................................................... 10 mS to 200 mS
Range 2 ................................................ 100 mS to 2.5 seconds
Power Up Initialization:
The 8282A one-shot can be prevented from triggering on
power up for a period of 0.4 to 27 seconds, user adjustable.
Note - For all Series 80 control modules, the output(s) are
inactive (open) for 100 to 300 mS after power is applied
regardless of control settings or the light beam’s status.
Environmental:
Operating Temperature................. -40°to131°F (-40° to 55° C)
Storage Temperature .................. -40° to167° F (-40° to 75° C)
Operating Humidity...............................95% Relative Humidity
Storage Humidity .........................95% Relative Humidity, Max.
Mechanical:
Construction - The 8282A consists of a single PCB assembly
configured to interface with the Series 80 sensor system.
Vibration - 5 G or 0.06 inch displacement, whichever is less,
over a frequency range of 10 Hz to 2000 Hz

CONTROLSANDADJUSTMENTS
The timing range and triggering mode are switch selected
according to the chart printed on the label. Paste the label on
the inside of the control module’s side cover for future
reference. The length of the one-shot pulse may be varied,
within the range selected, by adjusting the pulse width
potentiometer (clockwise = increase). The 8282A is equipped
with a second potentiometer for adjusting the start up delay
period.
TIMINGDIAGRAM:
Condition 1 - The power up delay period for the 8282A is user
adjustable from 0.4 to 27 seconds. The adjustable power up
delay prevents the one-shot from initiating any control action
until the machine or process being monitored reaches normal
operating speed.
Condition 2 - In this example, the LT to DRK transition has
been selected as the trigger; operation with the DRK to LT
transition is similar. The one-shot pulse starts at the first
appropriate transition following the power up delay period.
Note that the one-shot pulse length, “T”, is constant regardless
of how long the infrared light beam is blocked.
Condition 3 - A retriggerable one-shot pulse, once started by a
LT/DRK transition, can be extended indefinitely if a LT/DRK
transition always occurs before the end of the preset time
period, “T”.
The one-shot pulse produced by the 8282A is transition
triggered, that is, a light or dark change in the infrared light
beam is used to start the one-shot timer pulse. Either the LT to
DRK, or DRK to LT transition may be selected to trigger the
one-shot. Note, however, that with the installation of a one-
shot logic card, the control module’s output is governed by
the settings of the logic card rather than the status of the
infrared light beam. For the following timing diagrams,
assume that the LT to DRK transition has been selected as the
trigger.
