Getting Started
Thank you for choosing the MICROSCAN III scan tool. The
MICROSCAN III provides diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and
datastream information for electronic vehicle control systems.
MICROSCAN III can also graph live data parameters, record data,
clear DTCs from the electronic control module (ECM), and reset
the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
Please read through these instructions, and thesafety information
that was included in your kit, carefully to get started using your
diagnostic tool.
To get the most out of your new MICROSCAN III
1. Download the MICROSCAN III User Manual found online at:
http://diagnostics.snapon.com/usermanuals
Refer to the manual for more in-depth usage details.
2. Download and install ShopStream™ Connect; the PC-based
software that expands the capabilities of your scan tool, and
allows you to view data saved on the scan tool on your PC.
ShopStream Connect is available at no cost to you from:
http://diagnostics.snapon.com/ssc (North America) or
http://diagnostics.snapon.com/uk (United Kingdom)
All tool operations are performed using the touch-sensitive screen.
The MICROSCAN III is designed for diagnosing OBD-II compliant
vehicles, and also has the ability to communicate with many older
OBD-I models. Optional data cable adapters and an auxiliary
power cable set are needed to connect the tool to earlier vehicles.
Contact your Snap-on representative for information on optional
equipment.

Powering Up

The Data Cable for your MICROSCAN III plugs directly into the
16-pin data link connector (DLC) on OBD-II compliant vehicles.
The USB port connects the scan tool to a personal computer (PC)
for updating the system software and transferring saved files.
To connect MICROSCAN III to a Vehicle:
1. Connect the data cable to MICROSCAN III.
2. Connect the 16-pin end of the data cable to the vehicle DLC.
3. Switch the vehicle ignition on.
On connection with the vehicle the scan tool automatically powers
on. The first time you use the scan tool you are asked to select a
language. International country code icons are used to indicate
the available languages, tap an icon to select and continue:
After making a selection, and on subsequent powering on, the
scan tool opens the Main menu once the unit is ready for use. The
language remains as selected after powering down.

Main Menu
The Main menu is a series of touch-sensitive buttons that access
scan tool operations. Select a Main menu option to begin testing.
1— Global OBD-II—opens a sub-menu of operations.
2— OBD-I Codes—access the code report on older vehicles.
Optional accessories are needed to connect to these
vehicles, contact your Snap-on representative for details.
3— Enhanced Codes—opens a list of manufacturer specific
codes that are not included in the standard DTC list.
4— ABS Codes—displays codes for the antilock brake
system (ABS).
5— Global OBD Help—opensafilethatexplainscertaintests
and procedures.
6— Select Protocol—allows you to choose which vehicle
communication protocol the scan tool uses.
7— Captured Movies—opens a list of previously recorded
data files.
8— Tools—opens a menu for configuring the scan tool
display characteristics.
Main menu buttons open either an additional sub-menu of options
or a test screen. Test screens typically include data or test results
along with a toolbar of buttons that allow you to navigate through
and manage the information presented. The toolbar displays
along the right-hand edge of the screen.

Toolbar
Buttons are for performing scan tool operations. Which buttons
display varies based on the function being performed.
Additional buttons, other than those shown above, appear on the
toolbar or in pop-up windows under certain conditions.
Name Button Description
Up Scrolls the data toward the bottom of the screen
when there is additional information above what
is shown on the tool.
Down Scrolls the data toward the top of the screen
when there is information below what is shown
on the tool.
Return Returns to the previously viewed screen.
More Opens the next set of toolbar buttons.
List/Graph Switches the data between a list view and a
graph view.
Custom Data
List Allows you to select which data parameters
display on the data list.
Save Movie Saves a copy of the data recorded in the data
buffer.
Screen Mode Switches screen configuration between
landscape and portrait view.
Save Screen Saves an image of the currently displayed
screen.
Save Report Saves one complete transmission of ECM serial
data.
Settings Opens a menu for configuring the display screen.
Play/Pause Suspends data collection when viewing live data
to allow closer examination, and restarts data
collection when viewing paused data.

Powering Up
MICROSCAN III se enciende automáticamente cuando se conecta al
vehículo que se va a inspeccionar o a un puerto USB con alimentación
eléctrica.

El cable de datos de MICROSCAN III se conecta directamente al
conector de enlace de datos (DLC) de 16 pines de los vehículos que
cumplen con la norma OBD-II.
El puerto USB permite conectar la herramienta de diagnóstico a un
ordenador personal (PC) para llevar a cabo la actualización del software
del sistema y para transferir archivos guardados.
Para conectar MICROSCAN III a un vehículo:
1. Conecte el cable de datos a MICROSCAN III.
2. Conecte el extremo con 16 pines del cable de datos al DLC
del vehículo.
3. Encienda el vehículo.
Al conectarse con el vehículo, la herramienta de diagnóstico se enciende
automáticamente. La primera vez que utilice la herramienta de
diagnóstico, deberá seleccionar un idioma. Para indicar los idiomas
disponibles, se utilizan iconos con el código internacional del país. Pulse
un icono para seleccionarlo y continúe:
Tras realizar la selección y después del encendido, la herramienta de
diagnóstico muestra el menú principal en cuanto la unidad está lista para

Menú principal
El menú principal está formado por una serie de botones táctiles que
permiten acceder a las distintas funciones de la herramienta de diagnóstico.
Para comenzar la inspección, seleccione una opción del menú principal.
1 – Global OBD-II: abre un submenú con varias funciones.
2 – Códigos OBD-I: permite acceder al informe de códigos de
vehículos más antiguos. Para establecer una conexión con
estos vehículos, es necesario utilizar accesorios opcionales.
Póngase en contacto con su representante de Snap-on para
obtener más información.
3 – Códigos mejorados: abre una lista de los códigos específicos
de los fabricantes que no se incluyen en la lista de DTC estándar.
4 – Códigos ABS: permite visualizar los códigos del sistema de
frenos antibloqueo (ABS).
5 – Ayuda de Global OBD: abre un archivo en el que se explican
determinados procedimientos e inspecciones.
6 – Seleccionar protocolo: permite seleccionar el protocolo que
la herramienta de diagnóstico utilizará para comunicarse con
el vehículo.
7 – Películas capturadas: abre una lista de archivos de datos
guardados previamente.
8 – Herramientas:abreunmenú desdeelqueesposible configurar
las características de visualización de la herramienta de
diagnóstico.
Los botones del menú principal permiten abrir tanto un submenú adicional
con opciones como una pantalla de inspección. Las pantallas de inspección
suelen incluir datos o resultados y una barra de herramientas con botones
para que pueda navegar por la información y organizar la presentación de
