2ALL ABOUT FRITZ!CARD
With FRITZ!Card, AVM offers an integrated communications
package which makes the advantages of I DN available to you:
a high transfer rate, rapid establishment of connections, opti-
mum line quality and maximum operational reliability.
FRITZ!Card consists of several different components:
•The AVM I DN Controller FRITZ!Card with the associated
driver software. FRITZ!Card provides the connection
between the I DN and application programs on the
computer, for example FRITZ! and other CAPI applications.
You have the facility to install FRITZ!Card in Windows 95, Win-
dows NT 4.0 (Workstation i386) or Windows 3.x. For further in-
formation, please refer to the relevant sections.
•The FRITZ! Windows software, a compact and powerful I DN
communications program. The CD contains both the 16-bit
version of FRITZ! and also the 32-bit version for Windows
95 and Windows NT.
• The AVM I DN CAPI Port Driver and the AVM NDI WAN CAPI
Driver. These drivers enable the I DN integration of operating
system functions under Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.
They permit utilization of “Remote Access ervice” (RA ) and
allow you to connect your computer to the server of an
Internet provider by way of the TCP/IP stack and the Dial-Up
Networking application of Windows 95 and NT.
For further information about the conception, deployment op-
portunities and environment prerequisites for the AVM system
drivers, please refer to Chapter 4 “Onto the Internet with
FRITZ!Card”.

2.1 What Does FRITZ!Card Require?
The following requirements must be met before you can oper-
ate the AVM I DN Controller FRITZ!Card in your computer:
• Your computer must have a free 8-bit or 16-bit plug-in slot
because FRITZ!Card is designed as a plug-in card for
computers with a PC/AT bus system. If both types of slot are
available, you should insert FRITZ!Card into the 16-bit slot.
• Find out which protocol is provided on your I DN line by the
I DN network operator. Connections employing the D 1 or
1TR6 protocol are possible. Connections installed
subsequent to 1994 are generally D 1 connections (Euro-
I DN connections).
• An IBM or 100% compatible computer with a hard disk and a
CD-ROM drive.
• Microsoft Windows 3.x for installation of the 16-bit version
of FRITZ!.
• Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation i386)
for installation of the 32-bit version of FRITZ!.
• If you intend to use the functions CAPI SoftModem V32 for
fax receiving and CAPI SoftCompression X75/V42bis (see
page 8) for data compression, we recommend a computer
with a Pentium processor and a minimum 16 MB of RAM.
If all these requirements are met, you can install FRITZ!Card.
FRITZ!Card and the software supplied with it have been developed
as a single workstation solution and are intended exclusively for the
connection of an individual PC to the ISDN.

2.2 How Does FRITZ!Card Work?
FRITZ!Card simply plugs into a free slot on the PC/AT bus. It is
connected to the I DN basic connection via the 0 interface on
the FRITZ!Card. This interface is connected to the I DN con-
nection by means of the supplied cable.
The driver software associated with FRITZ!Card is loaded from
the hard disk upon starting Windows. It controls the commu-
nication and data transfer processes, for example the simul-
taneous use of the B channels.
FRITZ!Card supports Version 2.0 of the standardized interface
COMMON-I DN-API (CAPI). Programs from other manufacturers
based on CAPI 2.0 can also be used with FRITZ!Card. This CAPI
version also allows you to work with CAPI 1.1 applications.
FRITZ!Card simultaneously processes both channels of an I DN
basic connection (2 x 64000 bits/s). Its small dimensions also
make FRITZ!Card ideally suited for use in small housings.
FRITZ!Card is a PC plug-in card which uses passive technology,
i.e. there is no processor on the card. All computing operations
are performed by the processor in the PC.
Functions of the driver software
The driver software with CAPI 2.0 processes the D channel pro-
tocols of the I DN connection and makes all the requisite B chan-
nel protocols (X75, HDLC etc.) available to the applications. In
addition, CAPI 2.0 offers the oftCompression X75/V42bis,
oftModem and oftFax performance features.
The driver software for FRITZ!Card supports data compression
as per V.42bis for X.75 connections in accordance with the CAPI
standard. The connection times and costs can be considerably
reduced when using this type of data compression on account
of faster transfer rates. Data compression is activated or deac-
tivated at the request of your I DN application, e.g. by
FRITZ!data.
In addition to the digital performance features, you can utilize
analog services such as Group 3 Fax (CAPI oftFax G3) and Mo-
dem (CAPI oftModem V32) with FRITZ!Card.

2 All about FRITZ!Card

The current driver software allows you to use FRITZ!Card with
all CAPI-based Windows fax applications. The controller supports
the sending and receiving of faxes at a rate of up to 14400 baud.
It behaves like a Group 3 fax machine.
FRITZ!Card additionally offers the CAPI oftModem perfor-
mance feature. On the basis of this modem emulation, it is pos-
sible to establish a connection from an I DN connection to ana-
log remote parties which are connected to the telephone net-
work via a modem.
Refer to the readme file for further details about the aforementioned
performance features CAPI SoftCompression, CAPI SoftFax and CAPI
SoftModem.
2.3 Freedom for Your Connection
FRITZ!Card enables you to establish connections with various
services and other parties. The basic principle for successful con-
nections and transfer operations is: The other party must have
a terminal device which is either of the same type or is compat-
ible.
The current standards are listed in the following:
Internet
In order to dial an Internet provider using the Dial-Up Network-
ing application of Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, you use
the PPP over I DN protocol (synchronous PPP) with the I DN
AVM CAPI Port Driver or the AVM NDI WAN CAPI Driver. For
further information, please refer to Chapter 4 “Onto the Internet
with FRITZ!Card”. Windows 3.x users are recommended to dial
in through a 16-bit client of an online service provider. Further
information about settings and applications can be obtained
from your service provider.
Online services
In order to dial online services you require the access software
for a service provider. Further information about installation and

configuration of the application can be obtained from your ser-
vice provider.
ISDN file transfer
For I DN file transfer you use FRITZ!data with the IDtrans or
Eurofile transfer protocols. The use of V.42bis data compres-
sion on both sides optimizes the transfer rate.
Group 3 fax
For faxing to devices with the Group 3 fax standard, the fax emu-
lation is generated in the CAPI driver. The user-friendly and prac-
tical FRITZ! module FRITZ!fax is recommended as the fax ap-
plication.
After installation of the AVM I DN CAPI Port Driver, you can also
carry out fax operations using the virtual modem AVM ISDN FAX
(G3). Other fax applications offering CAPI 2.0 support can simi-
larly be used.
Voice
The FRITZ!vox I DN answering machine is supplied in order to
utilize the voice functions of FRITZ!Card. In addition to this, you
can use telephony software from other vendors offering CAPI
2.0 support.
ISDN BBS systems
FRITZ!com with the B channel setups for the X.75 and V.110 pro-
tocols is available to you for dialing I DN BB systems. Alter-
natively, after installation of the AVM CAPI Port Driver you can
also use the modem AVM ISDN BBS (X.75) to dial I DN BB
systems, or use terminal programs from other vendors.
Analog BBS systems
You can use FRITZ!com with the B channel setup “Modem Ana-
log” for dialing analog BB systems. Alternatively, after instal-
lation of the AVM CAPI Port Driver you can also use the modem
AVM ISDN Analog Modem (V.32) to dial analog BB systems,
or use terminal programs from other vendors.
