Description
The unit is a photoelectric smoke alarm. Photoelectric technology is
more sensitive at detecting slow smoldering res which generally
produce thick smoke along with a little heat and may smoulder for
hours before bursting into ames. The smoke alarm does not contain
any radioactive material, and is harmless to the environment.
Important Safety Information
1. Press and hold in the test button to test the smoke alarm. Do not
use any other test method. Test the smoke alarm weekly to ensure
it’s fully operational.
2. When the smoke alarm is alarming, rstly make sure there isn't a
genuine re. You can then temporarily silence the alarm by
depressing the Hush button, open windows or fan the air around
the alarm to silence it.
3. Observe and follow all local and national building codes for
installation.
4. This smoke alarm is designed to be used inside a single family
dwelling only. In multi-family buildings, each individual living unit
should have its own smoke alarms. Do not install in non-residential
buildings. This smoke alarm is not a substitute for a complete
alarm system.
5. Install a smoke alarm in every room and on every level of the
house. Smoke may not reach the smoke alarm for many reasons.
For example, if a re starts in a remote part of the house, on
another oor, in a chimney, or on the other side of a closed door,
wall or roof, smoke may not reach the smoke alarm in time to alert

4
household members. A smoke alarm will not promptly detect an
emerging re except in the area or room in which it is installed.
6. Smoke alarm may not alert every household member every time.
The alarm horn is loud in order to alert individuals to a potential
danger. However, there may be some circumstances where a
household member may not hear the alarm (i.e. outdoor or indoor
noise, sound sleepers, drug or alcohol usage, deafness, etc.). If
you suspect that this smoke alarm may not alert a household
member, install and maintain specialty smoke alarms. Household
members must hear the alarm and quickly respond to it to reduce
the risk of damage, injury or death that may result from re. If a
household member has impaired hearing, install special smoke
alarms with lights or vibrating devices to alert occupants.
7. Smoke alarms can only alarm when they detect smoke or
combustion particles in the air. They do not sense heat, ame or
gas. This smoke alarm is designed to give audible warning of a
developing re. However, many res are fast burning, explosive,
intentional or caused by carelessness or safety hazards. In these
circumstances, smoke may not activate the alarm QUICKLY
ENOUGH to ensure safe escape.
8. Smoke alarms have limitations. This smoke alarm is not foolproof
and is not warranted to protect lives or property from re. Smoke
alarms are not a substitute for insurance. It is the homeowners’
and tenants’ responsibility to insure their own lives and property. In
addition, it is possible for the smoke alarm to fail at any time. For
this reason, you must test the smoke alarm weekly and replace
the unit every 10 years. The replacement date is printed on the
underside of the alarm casing.

Indication of Different Status
Standby Status: Red LED ashes once every 40 seconds indicating
the smoke alarm is operating properly.
Alarm & Test Status: When the test button is pressed or when the
smoke alarm senses particles of combustion and goes into alarm
(constant pulsed sound), the red LED will ash once per second. The
ashing LED and pulsating alarm will continue until the air is cleared or
the test button is released. For the rst six horn pulses, the alarm
operates at a lower noise level to make testing more comfortable for
users.
Low Battery Voltage Status: An intermittent chirp with red LED
ashes once every 40 seconds.
Fault Status: The alarm chirps every 40 seconds and 16 seconds after
each chirp, the red LED ashes once.
Silence Mode Status: The red LED will ash once every 8 seconds
after pressing the Hush button during alarm status.
Operation
After installing the smoke alarm, it is important to activate it and test it
for correct operation.
Activation
Press the test button and hold it for approximately 5 seconds until the
LED indicator lights up and then release the test button immediately
(the red LED will show through the Test button). The smoke alarm will
generate a beep to indicate that it's activated. Note: If no sound is

6
generated, the smoke alarm is not activated properly and should not be
used! Please return the smoke alarm to your supplier for replacement.
Test
After activation, it is good practice to test the alarm. Wait several
minutes then test the unit to ensure proper operation by pressing and
holding in the test button for several seconds. This will trigger the alarm
if the electronic circuitry, horn and battery are working properly. If no
alarm sounds, the unit may have a defective battery or other failure.
Refer to Troubleshooting section for a solution.
DO NOT use an open ame to test your alarm. This is not a reliable
test and you could damage the alarm or ignite combustible materials
and start a re.
CAUTION: Due to the sound volume (85 decibels) of the alarm, always
stand an arms length away from the unit when testing. This alarm
model has a soft-start alarm - the rst 6 beeps are at reduced noise
level for user comfort.
NOTE: WEEKLY TEST IS RECOMMENDED.
Silence Mode (Hush Mode)
The Hush Mode has the capability of temporarily silencing the alarm for
about 10 minutes. This feature is to be used to minimize nuisance
alarms only when a known alarm condition, such as smoke from
cooking activates the alarm.
Press the Hush button for at least 5 seconds to silence the alarm. The
alarm will enter into Silence Mode for approximately 10 minutes.

7
The smoke alarm will automatically reset after approximately 10
minutes. If particles of combustion still exist after this period, the smoke
alarm will alarm again.
The Silence (Hush) Mode can be repeated until the air has been
cleared.
Combustion particles from cooking may set off the alarm if the alarm is
located close to the cooking area. Using a fan on a range hood venting
to outside (non-recirculation type) will help remove these combustible
particles from the kitchen. The Silence Mode is extremely useful in a
kitchen area or other areas prone to nuisance alarms. NOTE: Smoke
alarms should be installed in open plan kitchens only and at least 3m
from cooking appliances. Heat alarms are a better choice for cooking
areas, as they are not activated by cooking fumes or steam.
DANGER: In normal use if the alarm activates, THE SOUND OF THE
ALARM REQUIRES YOUR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION AND ACTION.

Troubleshooting

9
Installation
Smoke alarms should be installed in every room (except the bathroom,
laundry, kitchen, attic and garage) and every other area of the home,
making sure people in the home will be able to hear and respond to the
alarm. For minimum protection you should t an alarm in the hallway
between the living areas and sleeping areas. Install an alarm within 3m
of every bedroom door and ensure the alarm is audible in bedrooms.
Recommendation on Typical Single Storey Dwelling
Install a smoke alarm on the ceiling of each bedroom and in the
hallway outside each separate sleeping area. If a bedroom area
hallway is more than 10m long, install a smoke alarm at each end. If
there is a basement, install a smoke alarm on the basement ceiling at
the bottom of the stairwell.
Recommendation on Typical Multi-Storey Dwelling
Install a smoke alarm on the ceiling of each bedroom and in the
hallway within 3m of each bedroom door. If a bedroom area hallway is
more than 10m long, install a smoke alarm at each end. Install a smoke
alarm at the top of a rst to second oor stairwell. There should be at
least one smoke alarm installed on every level.
Don’t install smoke alarms in the following places
1. Within 3m of cooking appliances or areas where normal
combustion regularly occurs (kitchens, near furnaces, water
heaters). Use heat alarms for these areas.
2. In areas with high humidity, like bathrooms or areas near
dishwashers or washing machines. Install at least 3m away from
these areas.

10
3. Near return air or heating and cooling vents. Install at least 1m
away from these areas. The air could blow smoke away from the
detector, interrupting its alarm sensitivity.
4. In rooms where temperatures may fall below 10ºC or rise above
40ºC, or in humidity higher than 93%. These conditions will reduce
battery life or cause false alarms. Avoid poorly insulated walls and
ceilings.
5. In dusty, dirty, or insect infested areas such as attics, particles can
interfere with smoke alarm operation and cause false alarms.
6. Within 30cm of incandescent light ttings and 1.5m of uorescent
light ttings.
Where are the best installation locations
• At rst you need install an alarm in the bedroom and hallway. In the
case of several bedrooms, you should install an alarm in every
bedroom.
• Install one in the stairway and on every oor.
• Smoke and heat from burning materials spread horizontally after
rising to the ceiling, so installing an alarm in the middle of the ceiling
is preferable.
• If an alarm cannot be installed in the middle of the ceiling for some
reason, the distance the alarm should be placed from the corner of
the wall should be more than 50cm (see Diagram 1).
• If the length of the room or the hall is beyond 10m, install at least two
alarms in the hall.
• Smoke alarms in rooms with sloping ceilings greater than 12.5º
should be located on the high side of the ceiling. Install a smoke
alarm on sloping, peaked or cathedral ceilings between 50cm and
150cm from the highest point of the ceiling (see Diagram 2).
