Figure 1 High-Pressure Pump Model 7889 Series

Description

The major components of the pump models in the

7889 series consist of a reciprocating air motor and a

double-acting pump tube. The pump tube is divorced

from the motor which:

• protects the motor from product contamination

• allows separation without product leakage

The pump tube features a dynamic primer (see Figure

3A) that enables the delivery of a variety of materials,

including lubricants. These high-pressure (40:1) pumps

contain a bung adapter [2 " NPTF (m)] that allows

operation directly from original drums or bulk

containers.*

Models 7889-6, 7889-B and 7889-C

NOTE: Models 7889-6 and 7889-C can be

hoist-mounted. Refer to the Page 2 for details.

Pump models 7889-6 and 7889-C are designed with a

pump tube length to accommodate different size

containers. See Figure 1.

* Model 7889-B is designed for remote installation.

Performance Curves

A pump’s ability to deliver material is based on the pressure (psi/Bars) and quantity

(cfm/lpm) of air supplied to the motor and the amount of material discharge [back] pressure to

be overcome within the system. This chart contains curves based on three different air

pressures. The curves relate delivery in pounds (kilograms) per minute (X axis) to air

consumption in cubic feet (liters) per minute (right Y axis) and to material discharge pressure in

psi/Bars (left Y axis).

4. Lower the Air Motor onto the wood block.

5. Remove upper Spring Clip (18) that secures the air

motor piston to the Coupling.

6. Rotate the Coupling until the air motor piston is free.

7. Remove the Air Motor Assembly.

Access to Upper Seal (Packing)

8. Remove lower Spring Clip (18) that secures Upper

Piston Rod (19) to the Coupling.

• Remove the Coupling from the Upper Piston Rod.

9. Loosen Jam Nut (21) that secures the Pump Tube

assembly to Body (16).

10. Place a lever between the Upper Mounting and

Packing Screw (11).

CAUTION

Support the Body and Upper Mounting assembly

during removal. Damage to the Upper Piston Rod

can occur.

11. Unscrew the Body and Upper Mounting assembly

from Pump Tube (24).

12. Remove Gasket (23) from the Body.

Overhaul

NOTE: Refer to Figure 3-A and 3-B for

component identification on all overhaul

procedures.

Prior to performing any maintenance procedure, the

following safety precautions must be observed. Personal

injury may occur.

WARNING

Do not use halogenated hydrocarbon sol-

vents such as methylene chloride or 1,1,1-trichlor-

ethane in this pump. An explosion can result

within an enclosed device capable of containing

pressure when aluminum and/or zinc-plated parts

come in contact with halogenated hydrocarbon

solvents.

Release all pressure within the system prior to

performing any overhaul procedure.

• Disconnect the air supply line from the pump

motor.

• Into an appropriate container, operate the

control valve to discharge remaining pressure

within the system.

Never point a control valve at any portion of your

body or another person. Material discharged at

high velocity can penetrate the skin and cause

severe injury. Should any fluid appear to puncture

the skin, get medical care immediately.

Read each step of the instructions carefully. Make

sure a proper understanding is achieved before

proceeding.

Disassembly

Separate Air Motor from Pump Tube

1. Clamp the pump assembly vertically in a vise at Bung

Adapter (22).

2. Remove Screws (5), Lock Washers (7), and Nuts (8)

that secure the Air Motor Assembly to the Pump Tube

Assembly.

3. Lift the motor upward to expose upper Coupling (17)

and at the same time place a wood block (2’ x 4’) onto

the surface of Upper Mounting (12). See Figure 4.Figure 4 Separation of Air Motor from Pump Tube with

Body Seal (Packing)

13. Remove the Packing Screw from the Body.

IMPORTANT: Should the pump contain flat

packings in the Body (see Figure 5), the

pump must be converted to use Seal (14).

Replace existing Screw with Packing Screw

(11) [order separately].

14. Remove Upper Bearing (13), Seal (14), and Lower

Bearing (15) from the Body.

15. Remove Screws (9) and Lock Washers (10) that secure

the Upper Mounting to the Body as required.

• Separate the Upper Mounting from the Body.

Pump Tube

16. Move and secure the Bung Adapter to Adapter (39).

• Secure the pump assembly once again horizontally

in the vise.

17. Unscrew Primer Body (48 or 49) from Adapter (39).

18. Remove Stop Nut (47) from Primer Rod (38).

• Support the Primer Rod through the hole as needed.

19. Remove Plate (46) from the Primer Rod assembly.

20. Grip Upper Piston Rod (19) and pull the entire rod

assembly from the Pump Tube.

21. Remove Gasket (25), Valve Seat (45), and additional

Gasket (25) from the Adapter.

22. Remove Valve Body (44) [with attached components]

and Guide Washer (40) from the Adapter.

23. Remove Screw (41), nylon Washer (42), Seal (43) and

additional Washer (42) from the Valve Body.

24. Unscrew Pump Tube (24) from the Adapter.

• Use a strap wrench.

25. Remove Spacer (30) from Barrel Assembly (26).

IMPORTANT: Should the pump contain flat

packings in the obsolete Barrel Assembly

(see Figure 5), the pump must be converted

to use Seal (28), Bearing (29), and Spacer

(30). Order Barrel Assembly (26) separately.

26. Remove the Barrel Assembly from the Pump Tube.

27. Remove both aluminum Gaskets (25).

28. Remove brass Bearing (29), Seal (28), and nylon Wear

Ring (27) from the Barrel Assembly.

Rod Assembly

29. Remove upper and lower Spring Clips (18) that secure

Lower Piston Rod (20) and Piston (31) to Coupling

(17).

30. Unscrew the Lower Piston Rod and the Piston from the

Coupling.

CAUTION

Support the Piston and Primer Rod assembly dur-

ing Roll Pin (37) removal. Damage to components

can occur.

31. Remove Roll Pin (37) that secures Adapter and Insert

Assembly (36) to Primer Rod (38).

• Use a punch and a small hammer.

32. Unscrew the Primer Rod and the Piston from the

Adapter and Insert Assembly.

33. Remove aluminum Washer (35), Ball (34), Spring

(33), and Retainer (32) from the Piston.

34. Separate Upper Piston Rod (19) from the Lower Piston

Rod as required.

Clean and Inspect

NOTE: Use the appropriate repair kit for

replacement parts. Make sure all the compo-

nents are included in the kit before discard-

ing used parts.

1. Clean all metal parts in a modified petroleum-based

solvent. The solvent should be environmentally safe.

2. Make sure to remove the thread sealant from both male

and female threaded connections.

3. Inspect all parts for wear and/or damage.

• Replace as necessary.

4. Inspect Upper Piston Rod (19), Piston (31), and Primer

Rod (38) closely. Use a magnifying glass to detect any

score marks.

• Replace as necessary.

5. Closely inspect the mating surfaces of all check valve

components for any imperfections Ensure a smooth

and clean contact is obtained when assembled.

Assembly

NOTE: Prior to assembly, certain compo-

nents require lubrication in clean oil.

Refer to Table 4 for details.

Upper Rod Seal

NOTE: Refer to Figure 5 for a section

view of the Pump Tube Assembly.

1. Position Body (16) small diameter upward.

2. Install and seat Lower Bearing (15) [small diameter

first], Seal (14) [lips downward], and Upper Bearing

(13) into the Body.

3. Install and align Upper Mounting (12) onto the Body

as required.

4. Install Screws (9) and Lock Washers (10) that secure

the Upper Mounting to the Body.

• Tighten the Screws securely in a crisscross pattern.

5. Install Packing Screw (11) into the Body.

• Tighten the Screw securely with the use of the

torque bar. See Figure 3-B.

6. Install and seat Gasket (23) into the Body.

• Hold the Gasket in place with a coating of grease.

Rod and Pump Tube Assembly

7. Screw Lower Piston Rod (20) [with Loctite 222] into

Upper Piston Rod (19) as required.

8. Clamp the flats of Piston (31) into a soft-jaw vise.

• Make sure the Piston bore points upward.

9. Install Retainer (32) [flange end first] into the Pis-

ton.

• Make sure the Retainer centers and seats properly.

10. Install Spring (33) into the Piston.

11. Install Ball (34) into the Spring.

12. Install Washer (35) onto Adapter and Insert

Assembly (36).

13. Screw the Adapter and Insert Assembly (with Loctite

222) into the Piston.

• Tighten the Adapter and Insert Assembly securely.

14. Remove the Piston assembly from the vise.

15. Install Washer (42) into Valve Body (44).

16. Install and seat Seal (43) [heel end first] into the Valve

Body.

• Use care not to damage the Seal.

17. Install additional Washer (42) and Screw (41) into the

Va l v e B o d y.

• Do not tighten or seat the Screw.

18. Lubricate Primer Rod (38) with Grease.

19. Install the Valve Body assembly (Screw upward) onto

the upper end of the Primer Rod.

• Use care not to damage the Seal.

• Tighten the Screw into the Valve Body securely.

20. Install Guide Washer (40) onto the upper end of the

Primer Rod.

21. Screw the Primer Rod assembly into the Adapter and

Insert Assembly until the roll pin holes align.

CAUTION

Support the Primer Rod and the Adapter and Insert

Assembly during Roll Pin installation. Damage to

components can occur.

22. Install Roll Pin (37).

• Use a small hammer.

23. Install Valve Seat (45) [small diameter first], Plate (46)

[convex surface first], and Stop Nut (47) onto the lower

end of the Primer Rod.

• Tighten the Stop Nut securely. Place a small punch into

the hole of the Primer Rod to prevent its rotation.

24. Secure Bung Adapter (22) [threads downward} onto the

internally-threaded end of Adapter (39).

• Secure the Bung Adapter in a vise to align the Adapter

horizontally.

25. Install Gasket (25) into the internally-threaded end of the

Adapter.
