Product Warranty

Advantech warrants to you, the original purchaser, that each of its products

will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for two years from

the date of purchase.

This warranty does not apply to any products which have been repaired or

altered by other than repair personnel authorized by Advantech, or which

have been subject to misuse, abuse, accident or improper installation. Ad-

vantech assumes no liability as a consequence of such events under the

terms of thisWarranty.

Because of Advantech’s high quality-control standards and rigorous test-

ing, most of our customers never need to use our repair service. If anAdvan-

charge during the warranty period. For out-of-warranty repairs, you will be

billed according to the cost of replacement materials, service time and

freight. Please consult your dealer for more details.

If you think you have a defective product, follow these steps:

1.Collect all the information about the problem encountered (e.g. type of

PC, CPU speed, Advantech products used, other hardware and software

used etc.). Note anything abnormal and list any on-screen messages you

get when the problem occurs.

2.Call your dealer and describe the problem. Please have your manual,

product, and any helpful information readily available.

3.If your product is diagnosed as defective, you have to request an RMA

number. When requesting an RMA (Return MaterialAuthorization) num-

ber, please access ADVANTECH’s RMA website: http://

www.advantech.com.tw/rma. If the web sever is shut down, please con-

tact our office directly. You should fill in the “Problem Repair

Form”,describing in detail the application environment, configuration,

and problems encountered. Note that error descriptions such as “does not

work” and “failure” are so general that we are then required to apply our

internal standard repair process.

4.Carefully pack the defective product, a completely filled-out Repair and

Replacement Order Card and a photocopy of dated proof of purchase

(such as your sales receipt) in a shippable container. A product returned

without dated proof of purchase is not eligible for warranty service.

5.Write the RMA number visibly on the outside of the package and ship it

prepaid to your dealer.

Chapter

Introduction

2ADAM-6542 manual

1.1 Introduction

The ADAM-6542 is an industrial grade converter which is designed to con-

vert Ethernet network to fiber network. It transparently converts Ethernet

signals into optic signals. The advantages of Fiber optic are wide bandwidth,

anti-EMI,and verysuitable forlong-distance transmission.Therefore, ADAM-

6542 is an ideal solution for “fiber to building”application in central offices or

local sites.

The ADAM-6542 provides three ways to be fixed in any industrial environ-

ments: DIN Rail, panel, piggyback mounting. The ADAM-6542 also supplies

+10~30 VDC operating voltage over the terminal block. In addition, the oper-

atingtemperature of theADAM-6542 isfrom -10~70°C.The above functions

make the ADAM-6542 a more stable and reliable industrial grade converter.

WDM Single Strand Fiber

TheADAM-6542adopts WDM(WavelengthDivisionMultiplexing) technol-

ogy that increases the information carrying capacity of fiber via multiplex

transmit and receive signals at different wavelengths on single strand cable.

The WDM technology is implemented in two sites: one is installed in the

ADAM-6542/W15, with transmitting channel of 1550nm and receiving chan-

nel of 1310nm. The other site is installed in the ADAM6542/W13, with trans-

mitting channel of 1310nm and receiving channel of 1550nm. Both transmit-

ting and receiving channel of ADAM- 6542/W15 and ADAM-6542/W13 are

multiplexed to a single strand cable. You can save half cabling cost when you

use ADAM-6542/W15 and ADAM-6542/W13 instead of your original dual

fiber converter.

High-SpeedTransmission

The ADAM-6542 supports MDI/MDI-X of auto detection. You don’t need to

crossover yourself. It also includes a switch controller that can automatically

sense transmission speed (10/100 Mbps). Both Ethernet port and fiber port

have memory buffers that support store-and-forward mechanism; it assures

data can be transmitted properly.

Flexible Mounting

The ADAM-6542 is extremely compact and it can be mounted via three

different ways. DIN rail, panel and piggyback mounting.
